Horwitz, Joseph B.
EXHIBITION OF JEWISH CEREMONIALS AND JEWISH FOLK ART; JUDAICA COLLECTION MR. AND MRS. JOSEPH B. HORWITZ
Original wraps. 8vo. 24 pages. 24 cm. First edition. Exhibition of Jewish Ceremonials and Jewish Folk Art: Judaica Collection, Mr. And Mrs. Joseph B. Horwitz, Fairmount Temple, Cleveland, Ohio, May 26, 1962. Descriptive list of 179 items from the extensive Horwitz collection, with 26 black and white illustrations. The Horwitz collection was donated to B'nai B'rith Museum: But the Klutznick really burst onto the Jewish museum scene after Cleveland philanthropists Joseph and Olyn Horwitz donated their extensive Judaica collection to Bnai Brith during the 1970s. The gift, which included a number of rare Italian artifacts, such as a 16th-century Torah wrapper and an 18th-century silk folder for a ketubah, a marriage contract, catapulted the museum into the ranks of major Jewish cultural institutions. Since Bnai Brith was primarily a social welfare organization, it needed a specialist to care for and display such an important collection. So it hired its first museum expert, Anna Cohn, from the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, in Williamstown, Mass. , in 1976. As the Klutznick Museums first director, Cohn said it took years to prepare, present and interpret the Horwitz collection, which she inherited 'well cared for' and still in its original boxes when she arrived at the museum. ('How Bnai Briths Museum Went From Must-See Site to Oblivion' 'Klutznick Museum's Collection, Including George Washington's Famed Letter to Jews, Sits In Storage'; By Paul Berger; Published August 12, 2011, Forward) . Subjects: Jewish art and symbolism - Exhibitions. OCLC lists 7 copies. Light wear to wraps, otherwise fresh. Very good condition. (ART-22-12)

MIRACLE WITHIN A MIRACLE: JOHANNES REUCHLIN AND THE JEWISH BOOK CONTROVERSY: AN EXHIBITION COMMEMORATING THE 500TH ANNIVERSARY OF REUCHLIN'S DEFENSE OF JEWISH WRITINGS
ISBN: 9780978813482; 0978813480Original publishers wrappers, Large 8vo, 47 pages. Includes 15 color illustrations and describes 25 book titles in detail; 25 cm. When Johannes Reuchlin published hisAugenspiegel (Eye Glasses) in 1511, just in time for the Frankfurt Book Fair, he knew it would cause a tremendous stir. After all, Reuchlin had decided to defend Jewish writingsand Judaism itselfagainst the combined forces of the emperor and the highest ecclesiastical authorities in Germany. It is remarkable, or, as Josel of Rosheim said, "miraculous, " that the Jews and Reuchlin prevailed and the books were preserved. The dramatic story of this moment in Jewish-Christian relations is retold in this exhibition through the very books that flamed the controversy. The exhibition is an international effort involving two American libraries and three German institutions. Inspired by the 500th anniversary of the appearance of Reuchlin's Eye Glasses, we have undertaken this project on two continents and at four venues. The Rare Book & Manuscript Library of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) in Cincinnati, Ohio, collaborated with the Institut für Stadtgeschichte Frankfurt am Main, the Museum Johannes Reuchlin in Pforzheim, and the Jewish Museum of Frankfurt, the crucial location for the historic events 500 years ago. Rare imprints from the pamphlet wars surrounding the Jewish Book Controversy are on display, as well as important works on both sides of the Renaissance humanist movement to recover ancient sources, including those written in Hebrew. Working together with David Gilner of the HUC-JIR, Fritz Backhaus of the Jewish Museum in Frankfurt, Michael Matthäus of the Institut für Stadtgeschichte Frankfurt am Main, as well as Christoph Timm and Isabel Greschat of the city of Pforzheim, we have produced this exhibition to commemorate Johannes Reuchlin and the Jewish Book Controversy. But we are also celebrating what Reuchlin stands for today, most importantly, religious tolerance, respect for books and people, and the power of knowledge to break down prejudice and build respect and understanding for cultural differences (U of Illinois, 2012) . SUBJECT(S) : Judaism -- Relations -- Christianity. Christianity and other religions -- Judaism. Jewish literature -- Censorship -- Germany -- History -- 16th century. Humanism -- Germany -- History -- 16th century. Scholasticism -- Germany -- History -- 16th century. Censorship -- Exhibitions. OCLC lists 14 copies worldwide (Emory, Newberry, Illinois, Harvard, Luther Seminary, HUC, Brown, Southern Meth, HUC-Israel, Nat Taiwan U, & 4 in Europe) , None in New York, Philadelphia, or California. Very Good Condition. (Bibliog-36-35) xx

Hubbard, Elbert (1856-1915)
LITTLE JOURNEYS TO THE HOMES OF GREAT BUSINESS MEN. MAYER A. ROTHSCHILD: Vol. 24, April. 1909. No. 4.
The original individual volumes. Each volume usually consists of: at least a 26 page text; frequently enhanced with woodcut devices and ornaments (many designed by Samuel Warner), and portraits and plates; and often with ads for the products of the Roycroft Shop (furniture, brass, books, bindings, etc.); as well as some commercial ads (like Pears' Soap). Some printing in red and black. 8vo. 15.5 x 20. 5 cm. Uncut. Sewn into original printed wraps, as issued. Fine condition. Hubbard (1856-1915), was a prolific writer and a tireless entrepreneur who is most famous today as the founder and guiding lig h t of the Roycroft printing and craft shops. These were based on the Hammersmith arts and crafts complex of William Morris, but with many American and Hubbard-ian twists and turns. Until his death on t he S.S. Lusitania, he was one of the most dynamic and famous men in the world. On his first trip abroad his letters home were mostly travelogue, and they became the basis for his first magazine eff ort . He sold Putnam's the idea of putting out a brief 'Little Journey' biographical sketch on a monthly basis. Later, when he established his own print shop, he took over the whole project. He also p rint ed and published two national opinion magazines, the 'Fra' and the 'Philistine'. He was also responsible for the famed 'A Message to Garcia'. "The graveyards are full of people the World could no t do without" -- Elbert Hubbard, 'Epigrams' (1911)
