PERCEPTIONS OF THE HOLOCAUST IN EUROPE AND MUSLIM COMMUNITIES: SOURCES, COMPARISONS AND EDUCATIONAL CHALLENGES
Hardback. 8vo. VIII, 196 pages. 24 cm. First edition. Muslims in Global Societies Series, Vol. 5. The way people think about the Holocaust is changing. The particular nature of the transformation depends on peoples historical perspectives and how they position themselves and their nation or community vis-à-vis the tragedy. Understandably, European Muslims perceive the Holocaust as less central to their history than do other Europeans. Yet while the acknowledgement and commemoration of the horrors of the Holocaust are increasingly important in Europe, Holocaust denial and biased views on the Holocaust are widespread in European Muslims countries of origin. In this book, a number of distinguished scholars and educators of various backgrounds discuss views of the Holocaust. Problematic views are often influenced by a persistent attitude of Holocaust denial which is derived, in part, from discourses in the Muslim communities in their countries of origin. The essays collected here explore the backgrounds of these perceptions and highlight positive approaches and developments. Many of the contributions were written by people working in the field and reflecting on their experiences. This collection also reveals that problematic views of the Holocaust are not limited to Muslim communities. Publishers Description. Subjects: Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) - Public opinion - Congresses. Muslims - Attitudes - Congresses. Brand new. Publishers price is more than double ours. New Condition. (SPRINGER-1-12)

INOSTRANNYE EVREI V TROSTENETSKOM LAGERE SMERTI
Original Wrappers. 8vo. 19 pages. 21 cm. First edition. In Russian. Title translates as, Foreign Jews in the Trostenets Death Camp. E. G. Joffe is a leading historian regarding the Holocaust in Belarus. He has written thoroughly on the subject and among other titles is a board member of the national historic Society and Foundation in Trostenets. Maly Trotenests was a village in Eastern Bellrussia located 7.5 miles east of Minsk; camp and site of mass murder of Jews. About 200, 000 people were murdered in the Trostenets area. About 65, 000 were killed in Maly Trostenets, including over 30, 000 from the last major action in Minsk. Between July 28--31, 1942 and on October 21, 1943 the last Jews from Minsk were murdered and buried in Maly Trostenets and Bolshoi Trostenets. During 1942, Jews from Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Austria, and the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia were brought by train to be killed in Maly Trostenets. Most of the victims were lined up in front of large pits and shot. Tractors then flattened the pits out. The prisoners in the camp were forced to sort through the victims' possessions and maintain the camp. They occasionally underwent selections (see also Selktion) . This happened more frequently during 1943. In the fall of 1943 the Nazis began to destroy all evidence of mass murder by burning bodies. Soviet Prisoners of war were forced to rake through the ashes looking for gold. As the Soviet army approached in June 1944, the Germans killed most of the remaining prisoners. On June 30 the Germans completely destroyed the camp. When the Soviets arrived on July 3, they found a few Jews who had escaped. (yadvashem.org) Subjects: Jews, German -- Belarus. Johlson, Joseph. Translated From The German by Isaac Leeser
INSTRUCTION IN THE MOSAIC RELIGION
5627 [1867]. Original publisher's boards, 12mo, vi 212 pages. The "Stereotyped" edition, revised, based on the 3rd revised and enlarged edition (The 1st edition was issued in 1830) . With a new preface by Leeser, and including Leeser's original preface (preface to the 1st edition) and, of course, his additions and changes of the preceding 37 years. A work primarily directed at American Jewish juvenile of the early and mid 19th Century. "Leeser's career as a translator also began in Philadelphia in 1830 with the publication of his rendering from German of J. Johlson's Instruction in the Mosaic Religion. Leeser, as part of his ongoing efforts to contribute to the development of Jewish education and culture in America, translated a number of important works into English from German, Spanish, French and Hebrew." (University of Pennsylvania). "Leeser brought with him to Philadelphia his translation of J. Johlson's Instruction in the Mosaic Religion. He had it published there in 1830, appropriately dedicated to his uncle Zalman Rehine. The book is a catechism published in Germany and translated and adapted by Leeser for 'the instruction of the younger...of Israelites of both sexes, who have previously acquired some knowledge of the fundamental part...of their religion.' Leeser undertook its publication because there was a great scarcity of elementary textbooks for Jewish children. It is significant that this Instruction in the Mosaic Religion, Leeser's first issued work, is a textbook of religious instruction for the young, for though Leeser attained distinction as an author, translator, editor, and a national leader of the American Jewish community, he considered himself, first and foremost, an educator." (Jewish Virtual Library). Spine rebacked, lacks blank front endpaper. Ex-library with usual marks, including stamps on title page. Good Condition (AMR-57-6)
