Original 1904 Wanted Poster with a photo and facsimile handwriting sample
San Francisco: Pinkerton National Detective Agency 1904. unbound. 10.5 x 8.75 inches issued by the Pinkerton National Detective Agency San Francisco California announcing a $250 Reward for the arrest of Abe G. Schwartz charged with the crime of Embezzlement described as a 27-year-old bookkeeper with "Pronounced Jewish features." He's a "quick nervous walker" who "usually smokes cigars." Also he is an "inveterate gambler" who "will probably frequent pool rooms race tracks and poker games." Further details note that Mr. Schwartz has a dark complexion and a prominent nose. "If located arrest and notify by wire the nearest of the above listed offices." Pinkerton Regional Wanted Posters are particularly scarce as private persons would often put up the reward money offered by the Agency. The Pinkertons in turn would then function as Bounty Hunters. Two photographs mounted on heavy cardstock and surrounded by a border of canceled postage stamps; entire piece measures 13-1/2 by 16-1/2 inches. $5000.Two photographs of the 12th Zionist Congress in Carlsbad by photographer Carl Wagner�one of the entire 12th Congress and another of the ""HaMizrahi"" delegates�sent as a souvenir to one of the congress' delegates Joseph Seltzer.The 1921 Zionist Congress was the first Congress to be held after World War I during which time the Zionist movement had won British support for its endeavors to create a Jewish national home in Palestine the Balfour Declaration. The Congress passed resolutions welcoming the decision of the principal Allied powers to grant the mandate for Palestine to Britain and encouraged the ratification of the Mandate by the League of Nations. On the cardstock mount is the handwritten dedication: ""To Mr. Joseph Seltzer delegate of the Carlsbad Congress."" On the cardstock appear Czech postage stamps cancellation marks and Congress inkstamps. Each photograph measures 9 by 6 inches. Excellent condition. unknown

The American editor insisted upon the change of title alleging an outspoken Jewish name would have a repulsing effect on the American reader and buyer. This shows remarkably an American publishers judgment of the degree of racial prejudice among his countrymen. Paris May 3d 1909 Dr. M. Nordau.†Max Nordau was a Hungarian-born doctor who settled in Paris in 1880 where he because a best-selling author not for his controversial works of social and artistic criticism and was a co-founder with Theodore Herzl of the Zionist Movement. Nordau helped draft the Basle Program at the first Zionist Congress in 1897 and played a major role in subsequent congresses. This book is the first translation in English which was originally published in German in 1898 and it concerns the question of intermarriage of Jews and Christians. The American editor insisted upon the change of title alleging an outspoken Jewish name would have a repulsing effect on the American reader and buyer. This shows remarkably an American publishers judgment of the degree of racial prejudice among his countrymen. Paris May 3d 1909 Dr. M. Nordau.†Max Nordau was a Hungarian-born doctor who settled in Paris in 1880 where he because a best-selling author not for his controversial works of social and artistic criticism and was a co-founder with Theodore Herzl of the Zionist Movement. Nordau helped draft the Basle Program at the first Zionist Congress in 1897 and played a major role in subsequent congresses. This book is the first translation in English which was originally published in German in 1898 and it concerns the question of intermarriage of Jews and Christians.
