JUDAICA MAX NORDAU
A Question of Honor - A Tragedy In the Present Day. In Four Acts - Translated by Mary J Safford
Boston: John W. Luce & Co 1907. First American Edition. Signed by Max Nordau with a revealing inscription dealing with anti-Semitism: “This play is called Doctor Kohn in the German original. The American editor insisted upon the change of title alleging an outspoken Jewish name would have a repulsing effect on the American reader and buyer. This shows remarkably an American publishers judgment of the degree of racial prejudice among his countrymen. Paris May 3d 1909 Dr. M. Nordau.†Max Nordau was a Hungarian-born doctor who settled in Paris in 1880 where he because a best-selling author not for his controversial works of social and artistic criticism and was a co-founder with Theodore Herzl of the Zionist Movement. Nordau helped draft the Basle Program at the first Zionist Congress in 1897 and played a major role in subsequent congresses. This book is the first translation in English which was originally published in German in 1898 and it concerns the question of intermarriage of Jews and Christians. Bookplate of writer Stephen Caplin. Very good plus to near fine copy in decorated gilt-stamped cloth. A remarkable copy. John W. Luce & Co hardcover books

JUDAICA American BIBLE IN HEBREW and ENGLISH Isaac LEESER 1806 1868 editor
Torat Ha-Elo-Him . The Law of God .
Philadelphia: Printed by C. Sherman for the Editor 5605. Five volumes 8vo. 7 1/2 x 4 3/4 inches. Hebrew and English text on facing pages. Contemporary black morocco covers elaborately tooled in gilt spine gilt with raised bands in six compartments yellow endpapers gilt edges expert repairs to joints and tops of spines Provenance: M. Nathans name in gilt on the upper covers The first Jewish translation of the Pentateuch into English: in an elaborate contemporary binding. More than any other person of his time Isaac Leeser 1806-1868 envisioned the development of a major center of Jewish culture and religious activity in the United States. He single-handedly provided American Jews with many of the basic religious texts institutions and conceptual tools they needed to construct the cultural foundation of what would later emerge as the largest Jewish community in the history of the Jewish people. Printed in 1845 this edition of the Pentateuch in five volumes included a vocalized Hebrew text of each of the Five Books of Moses together with an English translation and notes as well as the haftarot prophetic readings. Leeser actually began working on The Law of God in 1838. Among the factors involved in his decision to begin systematically working on a translation was the recent opening of Rebecca Gratz's Sunday School which met for the first time in March 1838 in Philadelphia and was desperately in need of appropriate study material. Students were compelled to use the King James Bible for want of a Jewish alternative. Religiously objectionable passages in other texts provided by Protestant organizations were either pasted over or torn out by Gratz's staff. Leeser who supported the Sunday School and was its chief academic resource person felt compelled to find more suitable texts for the students. The impetus for Leeser throughout was always his desire to provide the Jews of America with an English text of the Bible that was produced by one of their own and was not tainted by conversionist motivations. This binding is consistent with similar bindings on gift books of the era published and bound by Lippincott. This example with provenance to M. Nathans likely Moses Nathans 1811-1873 a prominent congregant of Philadelphia's Congregation Mikveh Israel. Rosenbach 569; Singerman 884; Goldman 7; Lance J. JUDAICA ALSHEKH Moses
Romemot El
1695. JUDAICA ALSHEKH Moses. Romemot El. Amsterdam: Printed in the house of David de Castro Tartas published by Eliezer ben Haninah 1695. Small quarto period-style full red morocco gilt elaborately gilt-decorated spine and covers raised bands black morocco spine label; ff. 94. $3500.Second edition the first Amsterdam edition of Alshekhs esteemed commentary on the Psalms beautifully bound.Alshekh d. after 1593 rabbi and Bible commentator was born in Adrianople studied in Salonika and then emigrated to Erez Israel settling in Safed where he gained prominence as an halakhic authority a teacher in two talmudic academies and a preacher. He was active in communal affairs and was a member of the rabbinical court of Joseph Caro who ordained him. This is the text that Hayyim Alshekh published in Venice in 1605 claiming that it was his fathers authoritative text and not merely a preliminary draft which had been published a decade earlier in Constantinople under the title Tappuhei Zahav. Alshekhs Biblical commentaries which are permeated with religious-ethical and religious-philosophical ideas supported by ample quotations from talmudic and midrashic sources became quite popular and have often been reprinted. With an introduction by the publisher citing Ephraim Luntschitz on the importance of the work and quoting the authors intentions in originally presenting this book to the public. Approbation on last leaf by Moses Judah ben Kalonymus Kohen known as Leib Harif the Ashkenazic Rabbi of Amsterdam. In addition the publisher adds after the first approbation: Also by the authority and with the permission of the great sage the head of the rabbinical court of the Sephardim our master and teacher Jacob Sasportas who has not however added his signature to the approbation due to a lack of time. The importance of receiving even without an actual signed approbation the blessing or perceived blessing of both the Ashkenazic and Sephardic authorities suggests the sharp divide between the two Amsterdam Jewish communities. With three leaves of text ff. 10-12 replaced in neat facsimile. Vinograd Amsterdam 637. Steinschneider 6431:13. A few early ink marginalia.Tiny repair to corner of title page not affecting border and first two leaves. A splendidly bound volume. hardcover
