8vo. 176 pages. In English. SUBJECT (S) : Arabs -- Spain. Jews -- History. Judah, ha-Levi, 12th cent. Kayser, (18891964) , was a German author and a literary journalist. After studying in Berlin, Munich, and Wuerzburg, Kayser was for several years a teacher in Berlin. In 1919 he joined the editorial staff of the S. Fischer publishing house and became editor in chief of the literary periodical Die Neue Rundschau in 1924. Kayser was dismissed from these posts by the Nazis in 1933, settled in the U. S. Two years later, and held the chair of German and European literatures at Brandeis University from 1951 to 1957. His Jewish interests found expression in the essays and reviews that he contributed to Jewish periodicals, which included the Neue Juedische Monatshefte, Der Jude, and Historia Judaica, and in books such as Moses Tod (1921) , Spinoza, Bildnis eines geistigen Helden (1932) , and The Life and Time of Jehuda Halevi (1949) . Illustrated with portraits and facsimiles. SUBJECT (S) : Jews -- Education -- Russia. Other Titles: Ensayos historico-culturales judios. TSISHO (or CYSHO) refers to the Central Yiddish School Organization. At a conference in 1921 attended by 376 delegates, the Central Yiddish School Organization (CYShO) was formed, which included as its affiliates Yiddish schools of all trends. In 1921 there were, in 44 Polish cities, 69 Yiddish elementary schools and 35 kindergartens, having altogether 381 classes with 13, 457 children. The Polish government took a hostile position to these new secular Yiddish schools, but nevertheless freed their pupils from the obligation of attending other schools to meet the requirements of compulsory education. Various absurd police accusations were leveled against the schools. Schools were closed and teachers arrested or removed. Nevertheless the network of these CYShO schools grew. In 1925 their numbers reached 91 elementary schools with 455 classes and 16, 364 pupils; 3 secondary schools with 780 pupils. In 1929 there were 114 elementary schools with 17, 380 pupils, 46 kindergartens, 52 evening schools, 3 secondary schools, and 1 teachers' training seminary, a grand total of 216 institutions with 24, 000 pupils. The Polish government became ever more reactionary and antisemitic, which resulted in a quantitative decline in the schools, but their quality kept improving. The character of the CYShO school became crystallized; its educational approach included also the social and national upbringing of the child, attachment to his people, and an attitude of social responsibility. The methodology of instruction was in consonance with these objectives. The pride of the CYShO school movement was the children's sanatorium named after V. Medem . This was a great creative institution with many pedagogic achievements. On the eve of World War II it had 250 children, and the institution was open the entire year. Between 1918 and 1920, Kazdan served as secretary of the influential Kiev-based Kultur-lige. Taking an active interest in the Yiddish school movement, he helped to establish Shul un lebn (School and Life) the first pedagogical journal in Yiddish. He moved to Warsaw in 1920, and maintained his active roles in the Yiddish school movement and the Bund. He was one of the principal leaders and founders of the Central Yiddish School Organization (TSYSHO) , a network of secularsocialist Yiddish schools founded in June 1921 in Poland. Kazdan wrote for the TSYSHO press and published curriculum guides for secular Yiddish schools; among his contributions were the Program fun yidish-limed in der 7-klasiker folks-shul (Syllabus for the Study of Yiddish in the Seventh-Grade Folk School; 1925) , Metodik fun yidisher shprakh (A Yiddish Language Curriculum; 1939) , as well as many articles on educational theory and the secular Yiddish schools.
