Kohut, Alexander, Rev. translated From The German by Max Cohen.
THE ETHICS OF THE FATHERS
1st Edition. Original Paper Wrappers, 8vo, vii, i, 5-188p. Singerman 3367.Commentary on the Pirkei Avot by a leading Reform rabbi of the 19th Century. In English tranlsation, but also includes "Beth Elohim" (pp. [171]-88) in German. By Rev Alexander Kohut, Rabbi Of The Congragtion Ahawath Chesed.Alexander Kohut (1842-1894) was a rabbi and orientalist from a poor Hungarian rabbinic family that could not even afford to send young Alexander son to the village school. There being no Hebrew school (cheder) in his native town, Alexander reached his eighth year without havinglearned even the rudiments of Hebrew or Hungarian. At a very tender age, while selling his mother's tarts in the marketplace, he was kidnapped by Gipsies, because of his extraordinary beauty. Much later, in 1885, after earning his rabbinic diploma and a Ph.D Later, Kohut was appointed as rabbi of Congregation Ahavath Chesed in New York. His arrival in the U.S. was the signal for rallying the conservative forces of American Jewry; and it was not long before he was bitterly assailed by the radical wing of the Reform movement. A series of lectures on Ethics of the Fathers, the first part of which was printed in book form (New York, 1885, i.e. this work), clearly established his respected conservatism in what became known as the Kohler-Kohut Controversy which many scholars see as the central reason for the calling of the Pittsburgh Conference that same year (JE 1905. See also Walter Jacob, The Changing World of Reform Judaism: The Pittsburgh Platform in Retrospect, 1985).Singerman and OCLC-Worldcat together list 7 copies in the US (AJHS, Yale, Cornell, NYPL, JTS, HUC, Penn), none south or west of Cincinnati. An important work in the history of the Reform movement in the US. YMHA library marikings on front and rear blank endpapers, all text pages clean and Very Good Condition. A Very Nice Copy. Kohut, Alexander; Barnett A Elzas; Max Cohen.
THE ETHICS OF THE FATHERS.
New York: Publishers Printing Company, 1920. Half Cloth. 8vo. 127 pages. Black and white frontis portrait. "Alexander Kohut (1842-1894) was a rabbi and scholar. He earned his doctorate in oriental languages at the University of Leipzig in 1865, and was ordained at the Breslau Seminary in 1867. After graduation he served as rabbi in Stuhlweissenburg (Szekesfehervar, Hungary) . While there he was county superintendent of schools, the first Jew to hold this position. At Budapest in 1868, the Congress of Jewish Notables elected Kohut secretary. In 1872 he became chief rabbi of Fuenfkirchen (Pecs, Hungary) , where he remained for eight years. He was appointed to the Hungarian parliament by the prime minister as representative of the Jews, but shortly thereafter (1885) he left for the United States to serve as rabbi of Congregation Ahabath Chesed in New York. Kohut's reputation as rabbi and scholar had preceded him and he was warmly welcomed. He became involved in the struggle between the traditionalists and Reform. Out of this controversy came his Ethics of the Fathers (1885, 19202) , which established the traditionalists' position. Kohut played a major role in the establishment of the Jewish Theological Seminary and taught Midrash and Talmudic methodology there. He was one of the first scholars to write about the Yemenite Midrashim. His greatest work was the Arukh ha-Shalem (8 vols. , 1878-92) , a lexicon of Talmudic terms which Solomon Schechter called "the greatest and finest specimen of Hebrew learning ever produced by a Jew on this continent. " In form it is a new scholarly edition of the Arukh of Nathan b. Jehiel of Rome, but in fact it is a path-finding contribution to Talmudic philology in which Kohut offers etymologies and additional sources which exhibit his wide knowledge of oriental and classical languages" (Reimer, Kaddari, EJ) . SUBJECT(S) : Jewish Ethics-Morale juive. Light soiling to boards. Minimal wear, internally bright and clean. Very good condition. (AMRN-13-7A).

JEWISH LIFE IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN COUNTRY COMMUNITIES
Softcover, illustrated, maps, portraits, 4to, 23 x 24 cm. 215, 528, 500 pages. Contents: Volume 1: The northern Great Escarpment, the Lowveld, the northern Highveld, the Bushveld -- Volume 2: Boland, Bushmanland, Central Karoo, Fairest Cape, Griqualand West, Kalahari, Koup, Namaqualand, Swartland, West Coast. Volume 3: Camdeboo, Cape Midlands, Garden Route, Griqualand East and Transkei, Langkloof, Little Karoo, North Eastern Cape, Overberg, Settler Country. SUBJECT(S): Jews -- South Africa -- History. Jews -- South Africa -- Social life and customs. Country life -- South Africa -- History. City and town life -- South Africa -- History. Geographic: South Africa -- History, Local. Note(s): Includes bibliographical references and index. The first two volumes, part of the unique on-going research project of South African Friends of Beth Hatefutsoth (or the Museum of the Jewish Diaspora), have enjoyed great success among readers, both in South Africa and abroad. Volume One focused on the northern and eastern Transvaal areas (mainly comprising today's Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces). Volume Two focused on the Western Cape. The final instalments will cover the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal, and the southern Gauteng area, including the various towns on the East and West Rand. The third volume of Jewish Life in the South African Country Communities, chronicling the history of the once strong and now largely vanished Jewish presence in the smaller towns and rural districts of South Africa, has now been published. The book starts with the earliest settlement of Jews in South Africa, before and including the 1820 Settlers. The areas covered in the new volume include the Garden Route, Little Karoo, the Cape-Midlands, Overberg and Settler country. The publication is sought after Africana and is of interest to all those, Jews and others, who lived in the country towns and shared their lives, as well as those who holidayed in the area. It will also appeal to historians, genealogists, and librarians. The research covers almost 1500 small towns and villages in South Africa where Jews lived. No village, hamlet or railway siding has been too small; so long as there has been a Jewish presence there, every location has found its way into the record. In addition to recording the story of the various Jewish communities, it also recounts the history of the places in which they lived. The book also includes many colorful anecdotes of life in the country towns and villages, as well as numerous hitherto unpublished photographs. New Condition. Printed on heavy glossy paper.
