Elma Levinger won numerous prizes for her plays and novels, including an award of honor for her outstanding contributions to Jewish juvenile literature by the National Jewish Book Council. Twelve of her books have been done in Braille. Levinger used both drama and the short story as a means of educating young people and women about Jewish history and traditions, hoping to encourage them to participate in Jewish social life. From 1820-23 he spread the ideas of the Haskalah as a private tutor in wealthy homes in Berdichev and other towns
..Levinsohn's connections with the Russian government gave him authority in Haskalah circles and protected him against the fury of his fanatical opponents. In his memoranda he tried to persuade the Russian authorities to mitigate the persecution of the Jews (his memorandum against the kidnapping of children for military service) and to introduce reforms in the spirit of the Haskalah. He supported a plan for agricultural settlement of Jews, especially those who had lost their livelihood owing to expulsion from the countryside and border areas
..Levinsohn's literary work was mainly polemical and propagandistic. It dealt with the social, internal, and external position of the Jews in Eastern Europe. He started his public advocacy of the Haskalah by writing satires, mainly imitations of those by Perl and Erter
.In 1823, Levinsohn completed his most influential work Te'udah be-Yisrael ("Testimony in Israel") which, because of Orthodox opposition, did not appear until 1828 (Vilna)
.[In it h]e characterized the Hebrew language as "the bond of religion and national survival," uniting all the dispersions of Israel into one people. He severely criticized the traditional Hadarim ("Hebrew schools") which he dubbed "Hadrei mavet" ("rooms of death"). He denounced their talmudic-centered curriculum, their unsystematic method of instruction, and their employment of corporal punishment. He objected to the use of Yiddish and demanded its replacement by "pure" German or Russian. He demonstrated that great Jews of the past knew foreign languages and studied the sciences, and explained the advantages of such studies, both in business and in relations with the authorities. He devoted considerable space to the advocacy of manual labor, especially farming, and criticized Jewish fondness for petty trading. The book had a great impact on Russian Jewish life. Groups formed in many towns which undertook to carry out Levinsohn's proposals. Even a part of Orthodox Jewry received the book sympathetically; only the Hasidim regarded it as a dangerous work. They banned the book and labeled an adherent of the Haskalah with the pejorative epithet te'udke. The Russian government awarded him a prize of 1,000 rubles for Te'udah be-Yisrael.
His contemporaries called him "The Russian Mendelssohn." For the modern reader, only his first book, Te'udah be-Yisrael, is of some historical value. By his personality and literary activity, Levinsohn undoubtedly did much to strengthen the moderate Haskalah. Certain ideas formulated in Te'udah be-Yisrael, such as educational reform and the transition to a life of labor and agriculture, later became a part of the programs of Hibbat Zion, Zionism, and other organizations and movements which preached "the productivization" of the Jewish masses and their adaptation to life in the modern world" (Yehuda Slutsky in EJ, 1972). . An opponent of pilpul, he argued that Midrashim should be understood according to peshat (plain, literal exegesis) (pp. 9-10)
. Lewinson published Ha-Emet Ha-`Ivriyah to demonstrate that statements by various individuals found in the Midrash and Talmud could be understood only within the context of what the individuals had said elsewhere (pp. 3-9) . Ha-Emet Ha-`Ivriyah also contains (pp. 10-150 annotations that Lewinson did not include in his [Sefer Hayi LeBavot] (Vienna: Bet Harnirlra h. 1872) , a critical study of Bahya ibn Paquda's Hovot ha-Levavot based on textual variants

'Ha-Bahur' (The Chosen One) , a grammar in the form of a tale for children, by Elijah Levita (1468-1549) : The relatively happy circumstances enjoyed by Elijah at Padua did not long continue. In 1509 the city was taken and sacked by the army of the League of Cambray, and Elijah, losing everything he possessed, had to leave the place. He betook himself to Rome, and having heard of the scholarly and liberal-minded Ægidius of Viterbo, general of the Augustine Order, who was studying Hebrew, he called upon him. This prelate, in exchange for Hebrew lessons from Elijah, offered to maintain him and his family. For thirteen years Elijah remained in the palace of the cardinal, writing works which spread his reputation, giving lessons in Hebrew, and, in turn, taking lessons in Greek from the cardinal. During this period Elijah produced the 'Sefer ha-Bahur, ' a grammatical treatise written at the request of the cardinal, to whom it was dedicated, and first published at Rome in 1518 (2d ed. Isny, 1542, and many subsequent reissues) . As the author explains in his preface, he called the work 'Bahur' because that was his surname, and further because the word denoted both 'youth' and 'excellent. ' The treatise is divided into four parts, each of which is subdivided into thirteen sections, corresponding to the thirteen articles of the Jewish creed; while the total number of sections, fifty-two, represents the numerical value of 'Elijah, ' his name. The first part discusses the nature of the Hebrew verbs; the second, the changes in the vowel-points of the different conjugations; the third, the regular nouns; and the fourth, the irregular ones. ... 1st Edition. 1 leaf ; 22 cm. J. Leonard Levy (was) a dynamic leader with an internationalist outlook (who) became Rodef Shaloms Rabbi in 1901. He had served congregations in Bristol, England; Sacramento, California; and Philadelphia. Rabbi Levy should be noted for his work to strengthen interfaith communication in Pittsburgh and beyond. During his Pittsburgh tenure, he started an international peace organization and co-edited the weekly Jewish Criterion, in addition to preaching at both Sabbath and Sunday services at Rodef Shalom. At Rabbi Levys invitation, President William Howard Taft visited Rodef Shalom on Saturday, May 29, 1909. This was the first time that a sitting United States president spoke from the bimah of a Jewish congregation during regular Sabbath services. (Rodefshalom.org, 2016) OCLC lists no copies worldwide.
