MEHMET GÜNDEM.
A redundant man: Ishak Alaton. Cemeteries are full of indispensable people.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 576 p., ills. "At an early age, I started questioning myself, wondering what there was beyond becoming wealthy. When I reached 65, I wrote an essay. It's title was "The Ability to Become Redundant." As I advance in age, the time I had left became more limited while the number of books waiting to be read on my shelves increased. I needed to find a solution to this contradictory situation. I needed to change my lifestyle. I reduced the time I wasted sleeping to the minimum. Transferring my business responsibilities to the younger generation sooner would address this situation. I took rapid steps in that direction. It was a great source of pride for me to see professionals who had absorbed the principles set from the beginning by the founders. It value this more and more. I see becoming redundant as the crowning of my life." Now when I look back as a man who has reached 85, I believe I have covered quite a distance. Life isn't as long as one thinks. Time flows and passes. What is left behind is what you've done, the causes you have struggled for. Don't forget that what we call life is not about the years you have spent, it is made of what you've experienced. Everything starts small, it starts with small steps. Unexpected obstacles appear at unexpected moment, obstacles emerge in front of you and you are being tested. Of course, there are opportunities too. Your character and your attitude develop as a result of what you've experienced. It is good that I realised early, after I had earned some money, that owning more money wasn't very important. It is good that I made success appear ordinary, that I diversified my assets. It is good that I pursued my quest and confronted the question "what will I strive for in my life?". It is good that I always sought respectability. It is good that I met Üzeyir Garih. It is good that in time I left the business to professionals. It is good that I embarked on the way to become redundant. It is good that I freed myself and relieved myself of my burdens. It is good that I wasn't raised with a single identity. It is good that I turned to my social responsibilities. It is good that I thought, and expressed my opinions courageously. It is good that I didn't pay attention to threats. It is good that I questioned myself and the society, that is you. It is good that I said: "let's cleanse ourselves of our sins". It is good that I became an "early crowing rooster". I live every day with the aim of becoming a more perfect and a more useful human being.".

Meiri, Menahem Ben Solomon, 1249-1306.
SEFER HA-RAV HA-MEIRI: ... `AL SHALOSH MASEKHTOT MEGILAH HAGIGAH VE-TA`ANIT ... [BET HA-BEHIRAH (MEGILAH, HAGIGAH, TA`ANIT) ]
Later Cloth, Square 8vo, 32 (of 33) leaves (final leaf, f 33, is missing) . In Hebrew. Meiri (12491316) , was a Provençal scholar and commentator of the Talmud. Meiri was born in Perpignan where he spent his whole life. His family, regarded as one of the most distinguished in Provence, originated from Carcassonne and Narbonne.
Among the contemporary scholars with whom he maintained close ties was Solomon b. Abraham Adret; they exchanged many responsa and Adret's teachings assisted him in the writing of his monumental work. Meiri was one of the participants in Adret's polemic against Maimonides which ended in Adret's excommunicating any person who read philosophical works in his youth. In a letter to Abba Mari b. Moses Joseph, who handled the entire affair and collected the relevant correspondence, Meiri disassociated himself from the attitude of Adret and his colleagues, upholding freedom of thought for the scholars of each country, and freedom from intervention by outside scholars. Extracts from Meiri's letter (republished by D. Kaufmann along with the reply by Joseph b. Simeon in the name of Abba Mari under the title ? Oshen Mishpat in the Jubelschrift
L. Zunz, 1884; Heb. Sec. 14274) , reveal his great interest in philosophy and other secular sciences, and reflect his pride in the local scholars who had acquired proficiency in them. Meiri occupies a central position in the sphere of the talmudic creativity of Provence, not only due to his extraordinary literary fecundity and the comprehensive scope of his works, but also because he summarizes the teachings of his predecessors during the previous three centuries. In effect he puts the seal upon the literary efforts in this area of Jewish culture. His literary activity covered halakhic rulings, talmudic exposition, biblical exegesis, customs, ethics, and philosophy. The vast majority of Meiri's works remained in manuscript until very recently, probably on account of their exceptional length, which made it practically impossible to copy them in full. A small number of his books were published in the second half of the 18th century and the majority of them from the beginning of the 20th century up to the present day (Ta-Shma and Derovan in EJ, 2007) . SUBJECT(S) : Talmud. Megillah -- Commentaries. Hagigah Ta`anit. OCLC lists 4 copies(JTS, HUC, Harvard, Danish Ntl Lib) . Ex-library with usual marks to later binding; stains, lacks final leaf, otherwise Very Good Condition. (kh-5-42)

Meiri, Menahem Ben Solomon, 1249-1306; Abraham Schreiber
BET HA-BEHIRAH 'AL MASEKHET BAVA BATRA
Original Cloth. 4to. XVI, 733 pages. 26 cm. First edition. Added English title page: Beth ha-behirah on the tractate Baba bathra; composed by Rabbi Menahem ben Solomon, Ha-Meiri, XIII Century of Perpignan. Edited for the first time from a unique manuscript in the Palatine Library of Parma. With references and notes by Abraham Schreiber. Avraham Sofer-Schreiber (18971982) , the son of the Erlau rabbi, was a prolific author who, although a scrupulously observant Jew, did not fit smoothly into the familys Orthodox legacy. He served from 1948 to 1966 on the faculty of the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. From the 1930s on, he dedicated himself to preparing critical editions of the writings of medieval Talmudists, most prominently the voluminous commentary of Menahem 'ha-Meiri' of Perpignan. (YIVO Encyclopedia; Sofer Family) . Meiri's chief work is the gigantic Beit ha-Behirah on the Talmud, in which he was engaged from 1287 to 1300. In it he summarizes the subject matter of the Talmud, giving both the meaning and the halakhah derived from it. It follows the order of the Mishnah. The work covers the orders of Mo'ed, Nashim, and Nizikin, and the tractates, Berakhot, Hallah, Hullin, Niddah, Tamid, Middot, and Mikva'ot. Beit ha-Behirah has been republished almost in its entirety in recent years from a single complete manuscript (Parma) . Of particular interest is the introduction to his commentary on Avot, in which he gives the chain of tradition of Torah study from its outset to his own time. It contains valuable material for the knowledge of the history of Torah study in Spain and Provence, and was copied out in full and completed (updated) to his own time by Isaac Lattes in his Sha'arei Ziyyon (ed. By S. Buber, 1885) . In addition to Beit ha-Behirah, Meiri wrote commentaries on the Talmud which were expository rather than halakhic in orientation. Although the manuscripts in this group of a number of tractates are still extant, none has been published, except for the commentary to Avot and the Beit ha-Behirah to the tractate, Bezah, which apparently belong to this group. Meiri was one of the few rabbis of his time to make extensive use of the Jerusalem Talmud in order to clarify the parallel discussions in the Babylonian Talmud, and his works are therefore of added importance for research on the Jerusalem Talmud and its variant readings. Meiri's style contributes much to the lucidity of his presentation. His Hebrew is accurate, precise, and simple. In addition, he succeeded in finding the golden mean between the generally contradictory aims of expository comprehensiveness and halakhic definitiveness. These features endeared the Beit ha-Behirah to scholars and its volumes are now repeatedly republished in spite of their great length. Subjects: Talmud. Bava batra Commentaries. OCLC lists 25 copies. Contains the bookstamp of Rabbi Stanley Platek. Cloth and outer edges lightly soiled, internally clean and fresh. Good condition. (RAB-55-49)
