Contains title page to Third Part (Of feasts and fasts throughout the year, the people of Israel must know and observe) and the Last part (in which contains all the precepts, rites and ceremonies concerning to a perfect economy dedicated to the very noble and magnificent lords Abraham and Ishak Israel Pereyra). MENASSEH BEN ISRAEL was born in Lisbon in 1604. Very young of age he went to Amsterdam with his father, Joseph ben Israel, and became a disciple of Haham Yshac Uziel. In 1622 he was appointed professor of the Portuguese Jewish community in Amsterdam and, four years later, he founded the first Hebraic typography in Amsterdam; printing small books in Portuguese, Spanish and Hebrew languages. Menasseh had a decisive contribution in reopening England to the Jewish people, closed since the time of King Edward Ist. He went personally to London and had talks with Cromwell who gave him an honorific pension he never profit of. Menasseh died in 1658 after returning from London. He was portrait by Rembrant. L’essai est précédé d’un "avertissement" sur l’auteur donné par le traducteur, d’une préface de l’auteur et d’une "Vie de Socrate". Planche frontispice d’après Monet, gravé par Ménil. Le traducteur signale que les "remarques ajoutées à la Vie de Socrate ne se trouvent pas dans l’originale allemande" et qu’elles proviennent de l’édition anglaise imprimée à Paris. L’essai est composé de trois dialogues à la manière du Phédon de Platon, à partir de la correspondance de Mendelssohn avec son ami Thomas Abbt. "Ami de Lessing, grand-père du musicien Félix Mendelssohn, ce disciple de Leibniz, dont il tente de concilier la philosophie avec la pensée juive, connut la célébrité à la suite de cette publication. (Fehlende Seiten in Kopie beiliegend). - Der deutsche Philosoph der Aufklärung Moses Mendelssohn (1729-1786) gilt als Wegbereiter der Haskala. Er bemühte er sich darum, die bedrückte Stellung der jüdischen Minderheit in Europa zu verbessern. Im Zusammenhang mit diesen Auseinandersetzungen erschien 1783 sein epochemachendes Spätwerk 'Jerusalem' - das auch auf die Gesetzgebung in Preußen Einfluss genommen hat - in dem er sich gegen jeden Glaubenszwang wendet und unbedingte Religions- und Gewissensfreiheit fordert. Mendelssohn unterscheidet zwischen Staat und Religion, die streng zu trennen sind und unterschiedliche Aufgaben erfüllen. Von Kant, Garve und Herder bewundert, wurde sie in kürzester Zeit neben Lessings 'Nathan dem Weisen' zur meistdiskutierten Toleranzschrift der als 'Zeitalter der Toleranz' bekannten Epoche.
