HISTORY AND LITERATURE OF THE PALESTINIAN JEWS FROM CYRUS TO HEROD 550 BC to 4 BC
Minor shelfwear. ; Examines Jewish history against the background of the successive kingdoms which conrolled Judea. From the time of Cyrus to the time of Herod, except for a brief period of independence in the second and first centuries BC, it was subservient to either the Persians, the Hellenistic kingdoms, or the Romans. The author discusses the political situation in Judea and the social and economic conditions in so far as we can know them, and the early literary and religious developments. He then moves on to a discussion of the literature of the second and first centuries BC: the scholarly and pietistic traditions, apocalyptic and historical writings, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the completion of the canon. ; 256 pages

ADVOCATE FOR THE DOOMED: THE DIARIES AND PAPERS OF JAMES G. MCDONALD, 1932-1935
Publishers Cloth. 8vo. X, 838 pages. 25cm. Illustrated. First edition. [16] pages of plates. The private diary of James G. McDonald (18861964) offers a unique and hitherto unknown source on the early history of the Nazi regime and the Roosevelt administrations reactions to Nazi persecution of German Jews. Considered for the post of U. S. Ambassador to Germany at the start of FDRs presidency, McDonald traveled to Germany in 1932 and met with Hitler soon after the Nazis came to power. Fearing Nazi intentions to remove or destroy Jews in Germany, in 1933 he became League of Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and sought aid from the international community to resettle outside the Reich Jews and others persecuted there. In late 1935 he resigned in protest at the lack of support for his work. This is the eagerly awaited first of a projected three-volume work that will significantly revise the ways that scholars and the world view the antecedents of the Holocaust, the Shoah itself, and its aftermath. (Publishers description) Subjects: Diplomats -- United States -- Diaries. World War, 1939-1945 -- Refugees -- Sources. Antisemitism -- History -- 20th century -- Sources. National socialism -- Germany -- History -- 20th century -- Sources. McDonald, James G. (James Grover) , 1886-1964 -- Diaries. McDonald, James G. Like new condition. (HOLO2-107-11)

McIlvaine, Charles; Leiser, Joseph; Straus, Oscar S; Root, Elihu; White, Andrew Dickson; Krauskopf, Joseph [Listed Speakers]
UNVEILING AND CONSECRATION OF THE JOHN HAY MEMORIAL WINDOW AT THE TEMPLE OF THE REFORM CONGREGATION KENESETH ISRAEL [EVENT PROGRAM]
1st edition. Original paper wrappers with glossy interior. 8vo. 6 pages, 25 cm. In English. A full program for the dedication of a large stain glass window to former Secretary of State John Hay. John Milton Hay (18381905) was a U.S. statesman who supported Romanian and Russian Jewish rights. Hay was a secretary of state under presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt from 1898 until his death in 1905. He was involved in U.S. diplomatic representations during this period on behalf of Romanian and Russian Jews. In 1902, at the urging of American Jewish leaders including Oscar S. Straus and Jacob H. Schiff, Hay addressed a note to the signatories of the Berlin Treaty of 1878 protesting Romania's violation of that treaty by its restrictions on Jews. Following the Kishinev pogrom of 1903, again after Jewish pressure and with an eye to domestic political considerations, Hay publicized a protest petition drawn up by B'nai B'rith. Oscar Straus, one of the speakers, was appointed to the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Hague under President Theodore Roosevelt. He would be reappointed by President Roosevelt in 1908, President Taft in 1912, and President Wilson in 1920. Straus made history in 1906 when he became the first Jewish cabinet member after being appointed by Roosevelt as Secretary of Commerce and Labor. He also participated at the Paris Peace Conference, advising President Wilson on the interests of European Jewry. Elihu Root, another of the speakers, served as the Secretary of State under President Theodore Roosevelt and as Secretary of War under Roosevelt and President William McKinley. He is sometimes considered to be the prototype of the 20th century political wise man, advising presidents on a range of foreign and domestic issues
.Root was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912. Andrew Dickson White, another speaker, was an American historian and educator, who was the cofounder of Cornell University and served as its first president for nearly two decades
.He was later appointed as a US diplomat to Germany and Russia (Wikipedia, 2018). Published as part of the series Sunday discourses by Rabbi Joseph Krauskopf featuring text of addresses from the event. "Presented by Rabbi Krauskopf" noted on front cover in pencil. Congregation Keneseth Israel is the sixth oldest Reform Jewish synagogue in the United States, beginning in Philadelphia in 1847 (Wikipedia, 2018). SUBJECTS: American Jewry. OCLC lists 7 copies worldwide (OCLC:18098188). Some pencil on front wrapper. Slight fading of images on wrapper. Very Good Condition. (AMR-54-3-BDXZ)

Medem, Vladmir
FUN MAYN NOTITS BUKH
1st edition. Later boards. 8vo. 153 pages, 25 cm. In Yiddish. Title translates to From My Notebook. Medem (1879-1923) was a Russian Jewish activist and ideologue of the Jewish Labor Bund. The Jewish Labour Bund, founded in 1897 in the Lithuanian Vilnius, was committed to the cultural and national rights of Jews in Eastern Europe. In this regard, Medem dared to oppose the view of Russian Marxists, and even of Lenin. These objectives received support in Central and Western Europe, e.g. from Austromarxists, and especially in several Jewish immigrant workers' clubs in Paris, whose members described themselves as Bundists. One such club, which also saw the education of the workers as its main task was given the name Arbeter-klub afn nomen Vladimir Medem (Workers' Club on behalf of Vladimir Medem). His educational policy ambitions culminated in 1929 in the founding of the Medem Library, which at 30,000 volumes is now the largest Yiddish cultural institution in Europe (Wikipedia, 2019). SUBJECTS: Socialism - Zionism - Nationalism and socialism. OCLC lists 11 copies worldwide (OCLC:144652941). Pages toning, Very good condition. First Edition of an Important Memoir. (YID-33-58-LX-'e)

MEHMET GÜNDEM.
A redundant man: Ishak Alaton. Cemeteries are full of indispensable people.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 576 p., ills. "At an early age, I started questioning myself, wondering what there was beyond becoming wealthy. When I reached 65, I wrote an essay. It's title was "The Ability to Become Redundant." As I advance in age, the time I had left became more limited while the number of books waiting to be read on my shelves increased. I needed to find a solution to this contradictory situation. I needed to change my lifestyle. I reduced the time I wasted sleeping to the minimum. Transferring my business responsibilities to the younger generation sooner would address this situation. I took rapid steps in that direction. It was a great source of pride for me to see professionals who had absorbed the principles set from the beginning by the founders. It value this more and more. I see becoming redundant as the crowning of my life." Now when I look back as a man who has reached 85, I believe I have covered quite a distance. Life isn't as long as one thinks. Time flows and passes. What is left behind is what you've done, the causes you have struggled for. Don't forget that what we call life is not about the years you have spent, it is made of what you've experienced. Everything starts small, it starts with small steps. Unexpected obstacles appear at unexpected moment, obstacles emerge in front of you and you are being tested. Of course, there are opportunities too. Your character and your attitude develop as a result of what you've experienced. It is good that I realised early, after I had earned some money, that owning more money wasn't very important. It is good that I made success appear ordinary, that I diversified my assets. It is good that I pursued my quest and confronted the question "what will I strive for in my life?". It is good that I always sought respectability. It is good that I met Üzeyir Garih. It is good that in time I left the business to professionals. It is good that I embarked on the way to become redundant. It is good that I freed myself and relieved myself of my burdens. It is good that I wasn't raised with a single identity. It is good that I turned to my social responsibilities. It is good that I thought, and expressed my opinions courageously. It is good that I didn't pay attention to threats. It is good that I questioned myself and the society, that is you. It is good that I said: "let's cleanse ourselves of our sins". It is good that I became an "early crowing rooster". I live every day with the aim of becoming a more perfect and a more useful human being.".
