‎Un jour de l'été 1982, alors que se déroule la guerre du Liban et que d'aucuns soutiennent que Beyrouth-Ouest égale le ghetto de Varsovie, Mathieu Litvak fait retour sur le suicide de sa soeur Esther, sept ans plus tôt. Il lui a toujours supposé une constante obsession de la guerre. Adolescente, sur le mur de sa chambre était suspendue une photo des combattantes juives du ghetto de Varsovie. La raison de son suicide ? Pour la famille, nul mystère : c'était une « malade ». Mathieu va enquêter sur la vie et la mort de sa soeur, tenter de comprendre la « maladie » qui la rongeait. Il écrira le livre d'Esther, celui qu'elle portait peut-être. Il le fera dans la plus grande culpabilité. Ne prend-il pas la place de la soeur morte ? Cette culpabilité est redoublée par l'appartenance de Mathieu à la «génération d'après ». Mais Esther s'est-elle suicidée à cause de la guerre ? N'y a-t-il pas autre chose, de plus banal ? C'est bientôt pour son propre compte que Mathieu interroge le passé. Pour savoir. Esther ne fut au total qu'un truchement. Car comment, abruptement, parler des camps de la mort ? N'est-ce pas la parole la plus obscène qui soit, l'interdit même ? Mathieu Litvak ira plus loin dans sa recherche de la vérité, franchissant les strates toujours plus difficiles à percer du silence, de l'oubli, de la douleur, peut-être de l'impossibilité de dire « ça ». Il sera délivré de ce poids insouleyable du non-dit par quoi la génération des survivants, a transmis les mots silencieux du malheur à leurs enfants, dépassant le simple cri sans voix qu'imposent l'horreur absolue, et la mort, toute mort. Rebound paperboard Hardcover with brown cloth spine. Cover edges worn. Spine slightly stained, and has a black library stripe (and library number) painted on its bottom half. Spine edges lightly bumped. Inner cover, pages and pages edges yellowing. Inner cover age-stained. Whitepage has library stamp and in inscription. Titlepage previously torn, repaired by previous owner with white tape - tape covers parts of the index which is printed on the back of the title page. Title page, first page, and last two pages are mildly age-stained. One small wormhole on pages upper corner extending from front whitepage into the middle of the book. Several tiny tears near page-edges (pages slightly prone to tearing). Pages browning. [SUMMARY]: This rare compilation has suffered some damage due to library neglect, but is still in good reading condition.‎

‎RARE JAHRGANG XIV ONLY - a compilation of issues of the "Jüdisches Litteratur-Blatt", a Jewish periodical founded by the German Rabbi and publicist Moritz Rahmer, includes 13 editions from the 14th volume of the periodical, from January 2nd 1885 until March 26th 1885. This periodical existed from 1872 until 1894 and appeared as a weekly annex of the important German-Jewish periodical "Israelitische Wochenschrift". 230x300mm. 52 pages. Rebound hardcover with marbled boards and cloth spine. Cover mildly stained. Cover corners and edges peeling. Cover corners bumped. Spine stained and browning. Spine edges worn. Library mark on spine and hinges. Most pages tattered. Few pages are somewhat or quite torn, however, in most cases there is no paper missing and the text is untouched. Separately added by previous owner are parts from the editions XII #1 and XVII #27. Pages and text block edges browning. [SUMMARY]: The book has sustained some damage, but is still in fair reading condition for its age.‎

C’est ainsi que Monique Raikovic est parvenue à se trouver en renouant avec des origines juives ashkénazes enracinées dans l’Odessa de l’empire tsariste : « En mars 1943, j’ai eu cinq ans. C’était la guerre, nous raconte-t-elle. Ma mère me disait souvent que j’avais de la chance, beaucoup de chance, ce qui m’exaspérait. Februar 1897 in Olmütz, Österreich-Ungarn; gestorben (?) 1942 im Vernichtungslager Maly Trostinez) war eine österreichisch-tschechoslowakische Illustratorin. (...) Von Suska / Anny / Annie Engelmann lassen sich mehr als 35 illustrierte Bücher bibliographisch nachweisen. First Title is Mordekhai ‘Imanuel Noah by Rabbi Max Raisin. Title translates to Mordecai Manuel Noah. Second title is Masaot by Mordecai Manuel Noah, the First Hebrew translation of Noah’s famous “Travels in England, France, Spain and the Barbary States, in the years 1813-14 and 15.” Publishing the work in Hebrew, in Eastern Europe, was a way to reach the wider Jewish world to tell the amazing story of Noah, probably the most powerful Jew in the Western Hemisphere of the early 19th Century. Both are published by the Achiasaf Society, a Hebrew language publisher founded by noted Zionist thinker Asher Zvi Hirsch Ginzberg, better known as Ahad Ha’Am. It contains a brief biography of American-Jewish statesman and proto-Zionist thinker, Mordecai Manuel Noah, and Noah’s own accounts of his travels in England, France, Spain, and the Barbary Coast. (Today known as the Greater Maghreb. ) Noah, a journalist, playwright, politician, and lawyer, was one of the most prominent Jews of Early America, and served as Consul to Kingdom of Tunis (modern Tunisia) under President James Madison. When then-Secretary of State James Monroe removed Noah from Noah’s post, citing his religion as an “obstacle”, it sparked an outcry among American Jews and non-Jews alike, with Noah receiving letters of support from John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. Discouraged from pursuing government positions, Noah continued his career as a newspaperman in New York, founding and editing numerous publications there. Unfortunately, Noah is probably best remembered for his ambitious but failed attempt to establish “Ararat, A Jewish City of Refuge” on Grand Island in Upstate New York. Noah’s ardent belief that Jews would flock to his settlement to escape international persecution proved false, and “Ararat” never came to be.
