Mendes, Frederick De Sola
THE CHILD'S FIRST BIBLE: MAINLY IN WORDS OF ONE AND TWO SYLLABLES FOR YOUNGER CHILDREN, WITH QUESTIONS
Contemporary printed boards. 16mo. 64 pages. 16 cm. Ninth revised and enlarged edition. Revised by Martha Washington Levy. With frontispiece map of Palestine. One of several scarce printings of this item. The author explains Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, and portions of the Prophets and Judges. Questions for children follow each chapter. The author was a scholar and prominent New York Rabbi, one of the founders of the Conservative Jewish publication, The American Hebrew; and among the original members of the New York Board of Jewish Ministers, founded in 1881. A harsh contemporary review of this item: The Child's First Bible by F. De Sola Mendes. Here only the most startling and fanciful stories are given. Whatever is devoid of strangeness is either completely ignored or dismissed with a word. Thus out of the twenty chapters that the book comprises, one is given to the account of the Ten Plagues, while only a single word to the Ten Commandments. To Daniel also he devotes a whole chapter, while of the Prophets in Israel, whose careers were not spectacular like that of Elijah, Isaiah alone is given, and that only incidentally. Of the Judges, Samson is the favorite; and but for the author's gallantry, Deborah would not receive even honorary mention. Evidently, the Child's First Bible is a storybook, and as such it is a dismal failure. Despite the fact that it is written mainly in words of one and two syllables, it is deficient even in adaptation of language. Circumcision, Idolatrous, Prevailed, Conjurers are not a part of a young child's ordinary vocabulary. Besides, the book contains altogether too many proper names. Every other element of a good story for children is conspicuously absent. These facts compel the statement that The Child's First Bible should be the very last to be placed in the hands of the young child, for fear lest being the first it might be the last. (Yearbook of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, volume 19, pg. 378-9) . Subjects: Bible stories, English - O. T - Juvenile literature. Children - Conduct of life - Juvenile literature. OCLC lists 3 copies of this edition (HUC, Spertus, Yeshiva) . Binding repaired, boards soiled, writing on endpages, tear along map edge, otherwise, internally clean and fresh. Very good condition. First edition. Original publishers blue cloth, 12mo. 191, [1] pages. "Manual of religious duty giving ethical, spiritual reasons that appeal to the emotions, as well as to modern intelligence naturally so influenced by modern thought" (from author's preface). Henry Pereira Mendes (1852-1937) was an American rabbi who lived in New York and was born in Birmingham, England. He was born into a long line of rabbis. Raphael Meldola, the Chief Sephardic Rabbi of London, and David Aaron de Sola are among his maternal ancestors. Abraham Pereira Mendes, his father, was a rabbi in Birmingham, England, Jamaica, and Newport, Rhode Island. He received his education at Northwick College (rabbinics), University College (London), and New York University (M.D.) (1884). He was one of the founding members of the New York Board of Ministers in 1881, and served as its secretary until 1901, when he was elected president. In 1886, he joined Sabato Morais in helping to found the Jewish Theological Seminary, where he later became secretary of the advisory board and history professor. When Dr. Morais died, he became acting president of the faculty until Solomon Schechter was appointed in 1902.He was chosen president of the Union of Orthodox Congregations in the United States and Canada (1897) after promoting its foundation. Mendes was a founding member of the Young Women's Hebrew Association of New York in 1902. From 1917 to 1920, Mendes was a professor of homiletics at Yeshiva Isaac Elchanan. Menken, Adah Isaacs
INFELICIA
1st edition, first printing, of Authors only book. Original Publishers Cloth, Brown cloth cover stamped in gold, 16mo, 7-124 pages; 15 cm. Singerman 2085 (for the 126 page edition) . Singerman notes as well that he, the "compiler[, ] saw the rarer 124 page edition without the publisher's statement [about Dickens]. " Poems. The true first edition, first printing, dedicated to Charles Dickens but without his warm letter thanking her reproduced, as appeared in later printings. The success of this book meant that later editions appeared the same year in London as well as in the US (published by Lippincott) but with more pages (141 & 126, respectively) and the Dickens letter reproduced. Includes some poems with Jewish themes, such as Judith (Oh forget not that I am Judith! /And I know where sleeps Holofernes) , Hear, O Israel (The God of Jacob is our Shield) , etc. Menken (1835-1868) was Internationally famous for her starring role in the equestrian melodrama Mazeppa, in which she was stripped on stage to a flesh-colored body stocking, lashed to the back of the wild horse of Tartary, and sent flying on a narrow ramp above the theater, Adah Isaacs Menken consistently defied social mores. She cropped her black hair and smoked cigarettes, and publicly disparaged conventional married life. Menken represented an early example of the cult of personality, blurring her private life with her public persona.
She married four times in the course of seven years. Her second marriage, in 1859, was to the heavyweight boxing champion of the world, John C. Heenan
. One of the most glamorous celebrities of the 1860s, Menken also cultivated a literary following. She wrote poetry and developed relationships with the likes of Walt Whitman, Charles Dickens, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Alexandre Dumas, and Algernon Swinburne. George Sand was a close friend to the actor and was godmother to Menkens second child
. A major bone of contention to this day is the authenticity of her Jewishness. Though scholars have some evidence that Menken was raised a Catholic and converted to Judaism only after marrying her first husband, Menken herself once publicly rebuked a journalist who labeled her a convert by announcing that she was born in that faith [Judaism], and have adhered to it through all my erratic career. Through that pure and simple religion I have found greatest comfort and blessing. Whatever her origins, it is clear that Menken was fervently Jewish in her adult life. After moving to Cincinnati with her first and only Jewish husband, Alexander Isaacs Menken, Adah learned Hebrew fluently, studied classical Jewish texts, and contributed many poems and essays to The Israelite, a weekly founded by Rabbi Isaac M. Wise. Her poems indicate a passionate temperament, deeply committed to a kind of proto-Zionism and even messianism. Many are collected in the posthumously published volume Infelicia [this volume]. Menken viewed herself as a modern Deborah, calling on Jews to rise up against persecution in Turkey and protesting the kidnapping of a six-year-old Jewish boy in Bologna by representatives of the Catholic Church. She was one of the few Jews in America to protest when Lionel Nathan was denied the seat in the English Parliament to which he had been elected. And, at the height of her acting career, she refused to perform on Jewish High Holidays. On her deathbed at age thirty-three, suffering from what may have been peritonitis or tuberculosis (or both) , and treated by the personal doctor of Napoleon III, Menken was visited by a rabbi. Adah Isaacs Menken died on August 10, 1868, in Paris. She is buried in the Jewish section of Montparnasse Cemetery (Ackerman, 2014) . The book is also cited in Podeschi, J. B. Dickens & Dickensiana, ; B295(2) ; Wolff, R. L. 19th cent. Fiction, ; 4738. OCLC lists 28 copies of this rare first printing. Light wear to cloth, stains to title and half title, otherwise a nice clean book, about Very Good- Condition. (AMR-45-45)

Giudaica perfidiaIl Mulino, 2014. Book Condition: New. Language: italian.

LIDICE.
1st edition, Original photographic wrappers, 8vo, 28 pages plus 8 plates of photos. In Czech. Early pulication (1945) from just after liberation, documenting the Nazi Massacre at Lidice, Czechslovakia. On June 10, 1942 the village of Licide was totally destroyed by the members of the Ordnungspolizei and the SD (Sicherheitsdienst) in revenge for the assassination of Deputy Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia, Reinhard Heydrich on May 27, 1942. Soon after Heydrich's funeral, Hitler ordered that any town found to have hidden his killers was to be burned to the ground and leveled to the ground. All men over 16 were to be shot, women and children are to be sent to concentration camps with children who were suitable for "Germanisation" to be placed in SS families. The Nazis chose Lidice because its residents were suspected of harboring partisans and were falsely associated by aiding team members of "Operation Anthropoid" (code name for the assassination plot) . On June 10, 1942 Hitler's orders were carried out and Lidice and its citizens were obliterated. Light wear, expected toning to paper, margins of some photo plates are a bit wavy with stains, but are otherwise very good. (KH-9-12)

Merzbacher, Leo, editor and translator; Adler, S. M.(Samuel M.), editor.[Temple Emanu-El (New York, N.Y.)]
SEDER TEFILAH. THE ORDER OF PRAYER FOR DIVINE SERVICE. II VOLUME: DAY OF ATONEMENT [VOL II ONLY, OF 2] [DAILY PRAYERS. REFORM, MERZBACHER]
2nd Revised Edition, edited, revised, and corrected by S. Adler, 1st printing thus. Original gilt tooled leather, 8vo, 396 pages. In Hebrew and English on facing pages. Formerly Singerman 1780, now merged into Singerman 1667 as vol II, variant 1 (Thalmessinger & Cahn). The second of two volumes [vol. 1 Daily prayers & vol. 2. Prayers for the Day of Atonement] substantially reworked by Adler and published 1860 (vol. I) and 1863 (vol. 2, here). Together these comprise the First Edition of Samuel Adlers revised edition of Leo Merzbachers 1855 Prayer-Book. The first prayer-book to contain an English rather than German translation of the prayers. Despite the modest title-page, Adlers production here was not merely a revision, but in actuality he completely reworked it and added to and entirely altered the liturgy. Rabbi Leo Merzbachers original version of the prayers was quite traditional. As resourceful and accomplished a liturgist as Merzbacher proved to be, he seldom sought to
willfully turn aside from the traditional cannon (Friedland p. 36). Samuel Adler, on the other hand (Merzbachers successor at Temple Emanu-El of New York) had no such reservations about adopting radical change to the structure of the prayer-book. In his version of the Order of Prayer Adler did not rely on sources in Jewish tradition, rather he changed the prayers according to his subjective views of how synagogue services should be conducted. (See Eric Lewis Friedland, (Brandeis University dissertation) The Historical and Theological Development of the non-Orthodox Prayerbooks in the United States, 1967). Indeed it was precisely this 1860-1863 version of the Order of Prayer that was adopted by Temple Emanuel in New York, and all subsequent issues of the Order of Prayer utilized this version containing Samuel Adlers revisions. The Union Prayerbook itself was largely based on Adlers 1860-1863 revisions. Consequently, this prayer-book was also the cause of much controversy. Orthodox Rabbi Bernard Illowy of St. Louis fumed, that whomsoever utilized this so-called prayer-book was to be entirely excluded from all religious communion (see Michael A. Meyer, Response to Modernity: A History of the Reform Movement (1995) p. 237). Leo Merzbacher (1809-56) received his Rabbinic ordination from the celebrated R.abbi Moses Sofer of Pressburg (the Chasam Sofer), the leading opponent of the Reform movement. Merzbacher immigrated to America in the 1840s and was appointed the first rabbi of Temple Emanuel in New York where he served until his death. He adopted changes in synagogue custom such as the prominent use of an organ and eradicating the observance of the second day of festivals. Samuel Adler (1809-91) replaced Merzbacher in Temple Emanuel in 1857, following the laters death, where he served until 1891. Adlers son, Felix, was the founder of the Ethical Culture movement.
