Rand, Ayn
THE FOUNTAINHEAD
New York Bobbs Merrill 1943. Cloth, 8vo, 754 pages. Later printing of the first edition, with no printings stated but with all the other first edition points. In the second state dustjacket. Red cloth lettered in gilt on the front panel and spine . The dustjacket features a $3.00 price at the base of the front flat and a photo of the author along with three reviews of the book at the rear. All points are present: Page 9: The "9" looks like an "o" at the bottom. Page 321, Line 5: "referred" is spelled "refrred". Page 381, Line 4: The "G" in "G. W. " is slightly smaller. Page 480, Line 2: "Dominique" is spelled "Domininque". Rand was born Alisa Zinov'yevna Rosenbaum in 1905, into a middle-class family living in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the eldest of three daughters (Alisa, Natasha, and Nora) . Her parents were, Zinovy Zacharovich Rosenbaum and Anna Borisovna Rosenbaum, agnostic and largely non-observant Jews. Her father was a chemist and a successful pharmaceutical entrepreneur who earned the privilege of living outside the Jewish Pale of Settlement. (Wikipedia, 2010) . This book was Rand's first major literary success which became a huge seller, matching the later popularity of Atlas Shrugged. Made into a Hollywood film in 1949, with Gary Cooper and Patricia Neal in the lead roles, it has become an enduring piece of literature, more popular now than when published in 1943. On the surface, it is a story of one man, Howard Roark, and his struggles as an architect in the face of a successful rival, Peter Keating, and a newspaper columnist, Ellsworth Toohey. But the book addresses a number of universal themes: the strength of the individual, the tug between good and evil, the threat of fascism. Light use wear to cloth. Inside hinges are starting, but no markings, completely clean inside. Jacket has sunned spine and wear, especially at crown of spine, but is attractive. Overall Good Condition in Good Jacket. Raphall, Morris J.
POST-BIBLICAL HISTORY OF THE JEWS; FROM THE CLOSE OF THE OLD TESTAMENT, ABOUT THE YEAR 420 B.C.E., TILL THE DESTRUCTION OF THE SECOND TEMPLE IN THE YEAR 70 C.E. COMPLETE IN TWO VOLUMES.
1st edition. Period Quarter Leather and marbled boards, 8vo, 486 + 405 pages. All edges marbled. Raphall (1798-1868) was born in Stockholm and settled in England in 1825, quickly becoming prominent in British Jewry as one of its chief exponents to the Christian world and as a fighter for the political rights of Jews and against defamations of Judaism. He published the first Jewish periodical in England and co-produced the first translation of parts of the Mishna into English. In 1849 he moved to the US, and in 1860 delivered the first invocation by a rabbi before the US House of Representatives. Raphall is most known, however, for his delivery, less than a year later at the height of the secession crisis in January of 1861, of what became "the most highly publicized rabbinical statement on the 'Bible and Slavery'" in which he placed "Judaism squarely in opposition to abolitionism, [and] denied that any statement in the Bible could be interpreted to prohibit slavery, and, insisted that, on the contrary, biblical law granted the right to own slaves. " (EJ) . This played well with Jewish Southerners. He eventually settled in New York, where he led the B'nai Jeshurun congregation. (JE) Singerman 1409. SUBJECT(S) : Jews -- History -- 586 B. C. -70 A. D. Lower spine labels missing, some other wear to gilt spines, some rubbing to boards, hinges on vol I starting, but a beautiful set in gorgeous period marbled endpapers and boards with raised bands. Very Good Condition. A beautiful set. (AMR-5-25A)

HAGADAH FOR PASSOVER
1st edition. Original Boards, Folio, 92 pages, illustrated, 36 cm. SUBJECT(S) : Judaism -- Liturgy -- Texts. Haggadot -- Texts. Seder -- Liturgy -- Texts. Text in English & Hebrew; ceremonial directions in English. Hebrew title romanized. Ha-tsiyurim maaseh yede Shaul Raskin on title page verso. Imprint from title page verso. Color printing; title page in green and purple. Other Titles: Haggadah. English & Hebrew. Raskin (1878-1966) was an illustrator, painter, printmaker, critic. Born in Nogaisk, Russia, Raskin studied lithography in Odessa, and attended art academies in Germany, Switzerland, France, and Italy. In 1904, he emigrated to the U. S. He worked in many media and garnered a reputation for his draftsmanlike attention to detail and his realistic approach. His imagery depicted scenes of Jewish life, especially that of New Yorks Lower East Side. His trips to Palestine yielded many representations of that countrys Jewish population, among them twenty lithographs of Jerusalem. Raskin also illustrated many Hebrew texts, including Pirke Aboth, the Haggadah, Psalms, the Siddur, Kabbalah in Word and Image, and other works with Jewish content, such as Hebrew Rhapsody. Pirke Aboth demonstrates Raskins wonderful sense of design; he makes dramatic use of blank space as a component of his compositions as well as underscores the meaning of each of the books sections with a powerful combination of human and fantastic forms, each revealing carefully rendered details of expression. Raskin was the art and theater critic for the Yiddish weekly magazine Does Neie Land. In 1911, Raskins The Future of Jewish Art, appeared in the magazine. In the article, Raskin bemoans the inability to find common Jewish attributes in the works of such artists as Antokolsky, Israels, Liebermann, and Pissarro. Raskin postulated that a Jewish Art (sic) might emerge through the identification of common themes and subjects in the work of his contemporaries, specifically in genre and history paintings, rather than through an examination of the widely varied techniques, forms, and styles used by artists of Jewish heritage. Raskins work has been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy of Design, and the Pennsylvania Academy. His work has been collected by many major museums and galleries, including the Brooklyn Museum (Buchwald in EJ, 2007) . Very Good Condition. (HAG-8-28D) xx

Raskin, Saul
PIRKE ABOTH IN ETCHINGS
(ft) Hardcover, 4to, 124 pages, plates, 35cm. In Yiddish. SUBJECT(S) : Mishnah. Avot -- Illustrations. Parallel texts in Hebrew, Yiddish, and English. Yiddish by Yehoash. English by B. Halper. Raskin (18781966) was an illustrator, painter, printmaker, critic. His trips to Palestine yielded many representations of that country's Jewish population, among them twenty lithographs of Jerusalem. Raskin also illustrated many Hebrew texts. Pirke Aboth demonstrates Raskins wonderful sense of design; he makes dramatic use of blank space as a component of his compositions as well as underscores the meaning of each of the book's sections with a powerful combination of human and fantastic forms, each revealing carefully rendered details of expression. His work has been collected by many major museums and galleries, including the Brooklyn Museum (Buchwald in EJ 2007) . Ex library with usual markings. Cover loose. Wear to binding. Good condition.
