‎Philippson, Ludwig‎

‎Allgemeine Zeitung Des Judenthums (52 Issues; 1844, Complete This Volume)‎

‎Biweekly Serial. 8vo. 762 pages. 25 cm. First edition. In German. Full set bound in half cloth and decorative paper for the year 1844. Full title of the publication: “Allgemeine Zeitung des Judenthums: ein unpartheiisches Organ für alles jüdische Interesse in Betreff von Politik, Religion, Literatur, Geschichte, Sprachkunde und Belletristik” (General Newspaper of Judaism: Impartial Organ for All Matters of Jewish Interest Pertaining to Politics, Religion, Literature, History, Philology, and Belles-lettres) . The Allgemeine Zeitung des Judenthums was a “German journal devoted to Jewish interests; founded in 1837 by Dr. Ludwig Philippson(1811-89) ; published first in Leipsic and later in Berlin. At the time of its foundation there had been several Jewish journals in existence: "Sulamith, " "Jedidja, " Geiger's "Wissenschaftliche Zeitschrift für Jüdische Theologie, " and Dr. Höninghaus' "Universal-Kirchenzeitung, " which admitted Jewish contributors. Philippson felt that these did not satisfy the needs of the times. He determined to found a journal for the intelligent laity—one that should not only advance the knowledge of the Jews' past history, but should also plead the cause of the Jews of his day. The first number of his paper appeared May 2, 1837, and was published by Baumgärtner in Leipsic. During the first two years three numbers a week appeared; and for a year and a half a supplement was published three times a month, devoted to literature and homiletics. In 1839 the journal became a weekly. The "Allgemeine Zeitung" has never received a subsidy from any Jewish body. In 1848, when the publication of nearly all other Jewish journals was interrupted, the "Allgemeine Zeitung" braved the storm and spoke out plainly in the political turmoil. After 1853 a supplement was published regularly, entitled "Jüdisches Volksblatt zur Belehrung und Unterhaltung auf Jüdischem Gebiete" (A Popular Jewish Journal for Instruction and Entertainment on Jewish Subjects) . On the death of Philippson, Gustav Karpeles became editor. From the outset the "Allgemeine Zeitung" met with success. A few weeks after the issue of its first number a society of students in Leyden (Holland) was formed to aid its circulation. Even in Poland it obtained several hundred subscribers; and within three months after the appearance of the first number Philippson felt justly confident of its material success. The journal aroused great enthusiasm in the cultured Jewish circles of Germany, Austria, and Holland, and exercised considerable influence on Judaism in general—more especially in Germany, where it became a distinct factor in the evolution of Judaism. To its influence is due in a large measure the establishment of a rabbinical seminary (Lehranstalt für die Wissenschaft des Judenthums in Berlin) and of a Jewish Publication Society (Institut zur Förderung der Israelitischen Literatur) , as well as the calling together of a Jewish synod (Leipsic, 1869) . Philippson's chief aim was the civil emancipation of the Jews. But the paper gained further importance in connection with the inner communal and religious life of the Jews, since it devoted attention to the organization of religious instruction, to the form of worship in the synagogue, and to the cultivation of Jewish learning in all its branches. Jost, who in his "Neuere Geschichte der Israeliten" (iii. 149-156) , devoted a whole chapter to the "Allgemeine Zeitung, " said "that it became epoch-making in Jewish history by attempting for the first time to give a general view of the life and conditions of the Jews. " During the first years of its existence the paper had among its collaborators a number of the most distinguished scholars, some of whom were Gabriel Riesser, E. Carmoly, J. L. Saalschütz, S. D. Luzzatto, Leopold Zunz, Leopold Dukes, Julius Fürst, Leopold Löw, Franz Delitzsch, Adolph Jellinek, Abraham Geiger, and I. M. Jost. It is interesting to note that Phoebus Philippson, brother of Ludwig, contributed in the first year a series of eleven articles under the title "Ideas for an Encyclopedia and a Methodology of Jewish Theology. " (1906 Jewish Encyclopedia) Subjects: Jews -- Periodicals. Judaism -- Periodicals. Jews -- Germany -- Periodicals. Includes laid in portion of a copy from the last issue, number 52, of 1843. Very worn copy, with bumped and chipped edges. Signatures startled. Pages aged and soiled, but clean. Fair condition. (GER-38-12)‎

‎Gesammelte Abhandlungen (2 Volumes)‎

‎Clothbound. 8vo. 391, 486 pages. 24 cm. First edition. In German. The “Collected Essays” of Ludwid Philippson. Two volumes bound in red cloth with gilt lettering. These two volumes constitute the collected published writings in various periodicals of Ludwig Philippson (1811–1889) , who “achieved renown as the founder of the Allgemeine Zeitung des Judenthums (AZJ, 1837–1922) , which he edited until his death. Ludwig was an avid student of both Hebrew and classical literature in Dessau and Halle. After graduation from Berlin University (1829–33) , aged 22, he took up the position of a preacher and teacher in the Magdeburg Jewish community. Though following the practice of Reform Judaism – he preached in German and introduced the organ and the rite of confirmation – he tried to steer a middle course between Reform and Orthodoxy . He was among the initiators of the Rabbinical Conferences of Brunswick (1844) , Frankfurt/Main (1845) , and Breslau (1846) , but was critical of their decisions. One of his projects was the establishment of a modern institution for training scholars, rabbis, and teachers. From 1834 Philippson started editing several periodicals, first the monthly Israelitisches Predigt- und Schulmagazin (1834–36) , followed by his famous AZJ, the most important Jewish weekly of the 19th century, which was also dedicated to the struggle for emancipation in all parts of Germany and Europe and fought discrimination and antisemitism. From 1839–53, he published a popular translation and commentary of the Bible, which went through three editions, together with a revised edition illustrated by Gustav Doré (1875) . Along with I. M. Jost , A. Jellinek , and others he founded the Institut zur Foerderung der Israelitischen Literatur (1854–73) , whose main achievement was the publication of H. Graetz 's Geschichte der Juden (1853–76) . In 1862, he had to resign as rabbi of Magdeburg because he had become almost blind. He moved to Bonn, where he continued his journalistic and literary work until his death. He was among the founders of the Israelitische Bibelanstalt (1862) , the Deutsch-Israelitischer Gemeindebund (1869) , and the Hochschule fuer die Wissenschaft des Judentums (1872) . ” (2007 Encyclopedia Judaica) The second volume includes an appendix, that of an essay by Rabbi Hermann Cohen on the importance of the writings of the young Ludwig Philippson. Subjects: Judaism. Jews -- Civilization. Judentum. Germany -- Intellectual life. Covers lightly worn, backstrip lightly rubbed. Pages lightly aged, but clean and fresh. Very good condition. ‎DIE ISRAELITISCHE RELIGIONSLEHRE. VOLUMES II & III [ONLY]‎

‎Leipzig: Baumgärtner, 1862. Cloth; 8vo. Vi, 270 pages. In German. Volumes II & III bound together and pages continuously. Series: Institut zur Förderung der israelitischen Literatur Schriften, 7 Jahr 1861-1862. Contents: 2. Abtheilung: Die Lehre von Gott. 3. Abtheilung: Die Gottesverehrung. Ludwig Philippson (1811-1889) "achieved renown as the founder (1837) of the Allgemeine Zeitung des Judentums and its editor until his death. Ludwig was an avid student of both Hebrew and classical literature. After graduation from Berlin University (1833) , he took up the position of preacher in the Magdeburg Jewish community. Though following the practice of Reform Judaism-he preached in German and introduced the organ and the rite of confirmation-he tried to steer a middle course between Reform and Orthodoxy. He was among the initiators of the Rabbinical Synods of Brunswick (1844) , Frankfort (1845) , and Breslau (1846) , but was critical of their decisions. One of his projects was the establishment of a modern institution for training scholars, rabbis, and teachers. His newspaper was also dedicated to the struggle for emancipation in all parts of Germany and Europe and fought discrimination and anti-Semitism. Philippson published a popular translation of the Bible which went through three editions (1854, 1858, 1878) together with a revised edition illustrated by Doré (1875) . Along with I. M. Jost and A. Jellinek he founded the Institut zur Foerderung der Israelitischen Literatur (1854) whose main achievement was the publication of H. Graetz's history. " (EJ) SUBJECT(S) : Judaism. Has been rebound. ‎Philippson, Rabbi Ludwig [editor]‎

‎Allgemeine Zeitung Des Judenthums. Ein Unpartheiisches Organ Für Alles Jüdische Interesse in Betreff Von Politik, Religion, Literatur, Geschichte, Sprachkunde Und Belletristik. [1842]‎

‎Clothbound. 4to. 766 [4] pages. 26 cm. In German. Title translates as: “General Newspaper of Judaism. Impartial Organ for All Matters of Jewish Interest Pertaining to Politics, Religion, Literature, History, Philology, and Belles-lettres”. This is a consecutively numbered compilation of all 52 weekly issues for year VI, 1842, of the publication. Contains index and title page. “A German journal devoted to Jewish interests; founded in 1837 by Dr. Ludwig Philippson (1811-89) ; published first in Leipsic and later in Berlin. The first number of his paper appeared May 2, 1837, and was published by Baumgärtner in Leipsic with the subtitle "Unparteiisches Organ für Alles Jüdische Interesse in Betreff von Politik, Religion, Literatur, Geschichte, Sprachkunde, und Belletristik" During the first two years three numbers a week appeared; and for a year and a half a supplement was published three times a month, devoted to literature and homiletics. He carried on the fight for that cause begun by Gabriel Riesser and others. " (From the Encyclopedia Judaica 1906 entry) . The newspaper ceased in 1922. Subjects: Jews - Periodicals. Judaism - Periodicals. Jews - Germany - Periodicals. Backstrip worn, with torn edges, back board starting. Pages lightly aged, foxed, browned, and wavy; but very clean and fresh. Very good + condition. (GER-36-7)‎

‎Phillips, Anthony‎

‎Ancient Israel's Criminal Law. A New Approach to the Decalogue.‎

‎Oxford, Basil Blackwell 1970. VIII, 218 Seiten, Gr. 8° (23 x 15 cm), goldgeprägter Orig.-Leineneinband.‎

‎Mit 13 Seiten Literaturverzeichnis (13 pages bibliography). Aus dem Klappentext: "The central position of the Decalogue in the religion of Israel has long been recognized. But what precisely distinguished this code from the rest of Israel's law? Could it ever have been practised? It is such questions as these which concern Dr. Phillips, who approaches the Decalogue from the standpoint of the law courts. He argues that the ten commandments constituted the stipulations of the covenant entered into at Sinai by which Israel came into being, observance of which maintained her existence. But since breach of any of these stipulations threatened the entire covenant relationship, Israel herself treated such breach as a crime, that is an offence against the community, which the community itself punished by execution. Thus Israel technically distinguished crimes from civil wrongs (torts), for which the individual would sue personally for compensation, the injury being of no direct concern to the community. Dr. Phillips therefore maintains that the ten commandments had an inner unity of which he argues that both the Book of the Covenant and Deuteronomy take note. This new approach has resulted in a number of challenges to traditional views, notably concerning the law of murder, the interpretation of the tenth commandment, the nature of Hezekiah's reform, and the innovations of the priestly legislation." - Bibliotheksexemplar (ex library copy) mit Rückensignatur und Stempeln auf Schnitten und Titelblatt. Einband nur leicht berieben, bestoßen und fleckig. Sonst guter Zustand.‎
