Plessner, Salomon
Trauungsreden Für Israeliten
Paper Wrappers. 8vo. Viii, 182 pages. 21 cm. First edition. In German. Title translates as: Jewish Wedding Sermons. This collection of Wedding Sermons were written and published by Salomon Plessner, a German preacher and Bible commentator; born at Breslau April 23, 1797; died at Posen Aug. 28, 1883. Having lost his father when very young, Plessner had to support his mother and himself. He engaged in business, but found time to study Hebrew, rabbinics, and German, under Wessely's influence. At the age of seventeen Plessner began to study Wessely's Hebrew translation of the Apocrypha, resolving to continue the translation himself. He indeed published at Breslau in 1819 his Hebrew translation of the Apocryphal additions to the Book of Esther, under the title "Hosafah li-Megillat Ester, " with a literary-historical introduction. At the same time he became known as an eloquent preacher. Many of his sermons were published, among them his funeral oration on the death of Abraham Tiktin, bearing the Hebrew title "Zeker ? Addi? Li-Berakah" (Breslau, 1821) . In 1830 Plessner removed to Berlin, where for a short time he was a teacher in the normal school. Although possessing all the knowledge necessary for an Orthodox rabbi, he persistently declined rabbinical office, preferring freedom of speech. He earned a livelihood by preaching every other Saturday in the Berlin bet ha-midrash, continuing at the same time his study of the Apocrypha. In 1832 his "Nozelim Min Lebanon" was published in Berlin. This work consisted of a Hebrew translation of a part of the Apocrypha, with an appendix, entitled "Duda'im, " containing exegetical notes, verses in Hebrew and German, and sermons. The following year he was invited to dedicate the new synagogue at Bromberg, for which occasion he composed poems in Hebrew and in German, which were published under the title "Shirim la-? Anukkat Bet ha-Tefillah" (Berlin, 1834) . In his sermons Plessner adopted the expressions of the most eminent Christian preachers, interspersing his sentences with verses of Schiller and Goethe, and rejecting the derashic or homiletic interpretation of the Bible. In 1834 he began to publish his sermons in yearly volumes under the general title "Belehrungen und Erbauungen" (2d ed. Berlin, 1840, under the title "Religiöse Vorträge") . In 1838 Plessner published his "Dat Mosheh wi-Yehudit, " a catechism in twelve parts, preceded by an introduction, on the nature and history of Jewish religious instruction. His oratorical talent is particularly exhibited in his "Mi? Ra'e ? Odesh" (Berlin, 1841) , a collection of holy-day sermons for the years 1835 to 1839. (1906 Jewish Encyclopedia) Subjects: Jewish wedding sermons. Jewish sermons, German. OCLC lists 21 copies worldwide. Original paper wrappers absent. Title page very soiled around edges. All edges very bumped and soiled. Pages lightly foxed and lightly soiled throughout. However, all text legible, and pages quite crisp. Fair condition. (GER-38-49)

CONSTITUTION: PLOTZKER YOUNG MEN'S INDEPENDENT ASSOCIATION
1st Edition. Original Blue Boards. 12mo. 34, [36] pages ; 15 cm. Full text in both English and Yiddish, with boards and title pages in each language as well. The Plotzker Young Men's Independent Association was an American society for Jewish immigrants from Plock, Poland. The Jewish presence in Plock (Yiddish: Plotzk) dates back many centuries, probably to the 13th and 14th centuries, when records include them. The Polish kings extended rights to them in 1264 and the 14th century, and provided continued political support through the centuries. At the beginning of the 19th century, their more than 1200 residents comprised more than 48% of the city's population in what is considered the city's Old Town; through the century, their proportions ranged from 30s and 40 percent. (Wikipedia, 2016) The Association was formed in 1893. Very scarce. OCLC lists no copies worldwide. Previous owners bookplate. Boards have some minor edgewear. Overall about very good condition. Plungian, Mordekhay Ben Shlomo
OR BOKHER: VE-HU SHLOSHA MAAMARIM LE-HAIR U-LE-VAKHER DIVRE RAZAL U-LE-HAROT ... KI KRIAT AHAT HA-MASORA LANU ... HI HA-KHRIA HA-NE? EMANA ....
Hardcover, 12mo, x, 101 pages. In Hebrew. OCLC lists 1 copy worldwide (Danish Royal Library) . Plungian (1814-1883) was a Hebrew writer. Born in Plunge, Lithuania, he became learned in talmudic and rabbinical literature; later, he was attracted to the Haskalah and studied foreign languages. In his biography of R. Manasseh b. Joseph of Ilya, Ben Porat, Plungian dissociated himself from extremist Haskalah ideology as well as from unenlightened Orthodoxy. This work angered the religious elements, and Plungian backed down and destroyed the manuscript of the second part. He wrote for the journals Kerem Hemed, Ha-Maggid, Ha-Karmel, and Ha-Shahar and also wrote poetry. His writings include Kerem Shelomo, a commentary in two parts on Ecclesiastes and the Song of Songs; Tel-Piyyot; Shevet Eloha; and Or Boker (Slutsky in EJ, 2007) . Yellowing to edges of pages. Hinge repair. Bumped cover corners, with edgewear to cover. Otherwise, very good condition. (Heb-36-7)

Poale Zion
D.B. BOROCHOV (THIS VOLUME ONLY)
1st edition. Original boards with gilt lettering. 8vo, 320 pages, 21 cm. In Yiddish. Ber Borochov (1881-1917) was a Marxist Zionist and one of the founders of the Labor Zionist movement as well as a pioneer in the study of Yiddish as a language. As an adult he joined the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party but was expelled when he formed a Zionist Socialist Workers Union in Yekaterinoslav. Subsequently, he helped form the Poale Zion party and devoted his life to promoting the party in Russia, Europe, and America. When the Russian social democrats came to power, Borochov returned to Russia in March 1917 to lead Poale Zion. Borochov became highly influential in the Zionist movement because he explained nationalism in general, and Jewish Nationalism in particular in terms of Marxist class struggle and dialectical materialism. Borochov predicted, correctly, that nationalist forces would be more important in determining events than economic and class considerations, especially as concerned the Jews. Borochov argued that the class structure of European Jews resembled an inverted class pyramid where few Jews occupied the productive layers of society as workers. The Jews would migrate from country to country as they were forced out of their chosen professions by a stychic process which would ultimately force migration to Palestine, where they would form a proletarian basis in order to carry out Marxist class struggle. A key part of Borochovian ideology was that the Arab and Jewish working classes had a common proletarian interest and would participate in the class struggle together once Jews had returned to Palestine (Wikipedia 2015) . SUBJECT (S) : Labor Zionism - Nationalism. Very minor edgewear. Clean pages. Overall Very Good condition. (YID-30-1).
