Ludwig Philippson (1811-1889) "achieved renown as the founder (1837) of the Allgemeine Zeitung des Judentums and its editor until his death. Ludwig was an avid student of both Hebrew and classical literature. After graduation from Berlin University (1833) , he took up the position of preacher in the Magdeburg Jewish community. Though following the practice of Reform Judaism-he preached in German and introduced the organ and the rite of confirmation-he tried to steer a middle course between Reform and Orthodoxy. He was among the initiators of the Rabbinical Synods of Brunswick (1844) , Frankfort (1845) , and Breslau (1846) , but was critical of their decisions. One of his projects was the establishment of a modern institution for training scholars, rabbis, and teachers. His newspaper was also dedicated to the struggle for emancipation in all parts of Germany and Europe and fought discrimination and anti-Semitism. Philippson published a popular translation of the Bible which went through three editions (1854, 1858, 1878) together with a revised edition illustrated by Doré (1875) . Along with I. M. Jost and A. But what precisely distinguished this code from the rest of Israel's law? Could it ever have been practised? It is such questions as these which concern Dr. Phillips, who approaches the Decalogue from the standpoint of the law courts. He argues that the ten commandments constituted the stipulations of the covenant entered into at Sinai by which Israel came into being, observance of which maintained her existence. But since breach of any of these stipulations threatened the entire covenant relationship, Israel herself treated such breach as a crime, that is an offence against the community, which the community itself punished by execution. Thus Israel technically distinguished crimes from civil wrongs (torts), for which the individual would sue personally for compensation, the injury being of no direct concern to the community. Dr. Phillips therefore maintains that the ten commandments had an inner unity of which he argues that both the Book of the Covenant and Deuteronomy take note. He was an unsuccessful in his re-election reelection bid in 1858 and resumed the practice of law in Philadelphia. He became a trustee of Jefferson Medical College in 1862; was a member of the Board of City Trusts in 1869, vice president of the board 1870-1878, and president 1878-1882; director of the Academy of Music in 1870 and its president in 1872, resigning in 1884; member of the commission to supervise the erection of the municipal buildings in Philadelphia in 1870, resigning in 1871; director of the Pennsylvania Railroad Co. ‎Zuerst 1555 bei Antoine Vincent in Lyon erschiene Bearbeitung der Gelehrten Sigismund Gelenius (1497-1554), John Christopherson (?-1558) und Johannes Voeuroeus. - Philon von Alexandreia, erste Hälfte des 1. Jh.s n. Chr. "jüdisch-hellenistischer Religionsphilosoph. Aus reicher Familie stammend hatte er direkte Beziehungen zum römischen Kaiserhof; im Winter 39/40 führte er eine jüdische Gesandtschaft nach Rom, um von Caligula das Bürgerrecht für die alexandrinischen Juden zu erhalten. Seine fast vollzählig erhaltenen griechischen Werke sind überwiegend Erläuterungen zum Pentateuch, besonders zur Genesis; daneben stehen philosophische und historischapogetische Schriften, vor allem in der Auseinandersetzung mit Rom. Zur Interpretation benutzt P. die allegorische Methode, wie sie die Stoa auf Homer angewandt hatte, und lehnt sich auch sonst an die Stoa sowie an Platon an; die Ansprüche von Vernunft und Offenbarung suchte er in seiner Theologie auszugleichen; auf das Judentum seiner Zeit und auf das entstehende Christentum hat er großen Einfluß gehabt. Sein von Semitismen freier Stil zeigt die Einwirkung der Rhetorik und das Streben nach attischer Färbung" (Tusculum Lexikon). - Gelenke und Vorderdeckel etwas berieben, N.a.T., stellenweise etwas gebräunt, sehr gutes dekorativ gebundenes Exemplar.‎
