THE HASKALAH MOVEMENT IN RUSSIA.
355 p. + Frontis and full page plates. Publisher's device on title page. 8vo. Original full green cloth binding, gold lettered spine. Hardbound. First Edition. "The Haskalah, or Jewish Enlightenment, was an intellectual movement in Europe that lasted from approximately the 1770s to the 1880s. The Haskalah was inspired by the European Enlightenment but had a Jewish character. It encouraged Jews to study secular subjects, to learn both the European and Hebrew languages, and to enter fields such as agriculture, crafts, the arts and science. The maskilim (followers of the Haskalah) tried to assimilate into European society in dress, language, manners and loyalty to the ruling power. The Haskalah eventually influenced the creation of both the Reform and Zionist movements" - Shira Schoenberg. Some of its leaders in Russia were: Tobias Cohn; Isaac bar Levinsohn; Max Lilienthal; Alexander Zederbaum; Perez ben Mosheh Smolenskin; Moses Lob Lilienblum; and others. Very good copy. JUDAICA BOX 2

Raisin, Max: Noah, M. M.
MORDEKHAI IMANUEL NOAH [AND] MASAOT BANGLIAH, TSFARAT, SEFARD, UVARTZOT BARBARIA
1st Edition [and] 1st Hebrew edition. Period boards with original cover mounted on front, 8vo, [66], 25 pages. 22 cm. In Hebrew. Two books published together. First Title is Mordekhai Imanuel Noah by Rabbi Max Raisin. Title translates to Mordecai Manuel Noah. Second title is Masaot by Mordecai Manuel Noah, the First Hebrew translation of Noahs famous Travels in England, France, Spain and the Barbary States, in the years 1813-14 and 15. Publishing the work in Hebrew, in Eastern Europe, was a way to reach the wider Jewish world to tell the amazing story of Noah, probably the most powerful Jew in the Western Hemisphere of the early 19th Century. Both are published by the Achiasaf Society, a Hebrew language publisher founded by noted Zionist thinker Asher Zvi Hirsch Ginzberg, better known as Ahad HaAm. It contains a brief biography of American-Jewish statesman and proto-Zionist thinker, Mordecai Manuel Noah, and Noahs own accounts of his travels in England, France, Spain, and the Barbary Coast. (Today known as the Greater Maghreb. ) Noah, a journalist, playwright, politician, and lawyer, was one of the most prominent Jews of Early America, and served as Consul to Kingdom of Tunis (modern Tunisia) under President James Madison. When then-Secretary of State James Monroe removed Noah from Noahs post, citing his religion as an obstacle, it sparked an outcry among American Jews and non-Jews alike, with Noah receiving letters of support from John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. Discouraged from pursuing government positions, Noah continued his career as a newspaperman in New York, founding and editing numerous publications there. Unfortunately, Noah is probably best remembered for his ambitious but failed attempt to establish Ararat, A Jewish City of Refuge on Grand Island in Upstate New York. Noahs ardent belief that Jews would flock to his settlement to escape international persecution proved false, and Ararat never came to be. Masaot was written in 1814, before Noahs removal from his position of Consul, and ten years before the failure of Ararat. His biography is written by Rabbi Max Raisin, prominent early 20th-century historian of Jewish America. Inscribed at rear to the Noah Benevolent Society in 1936 "Upon the 85th anniversary of the death of Mordecai Manuel Noah."SUBJECT(S) Jewish politicians -- United States -- Biography -- Voyages and Travels. OCLC lists only 4 copies worldwide (NYPL, YU, HUC, and UPENN) Slight edgewear to cover. Paper beginning to yellow. Hinges starting. Otherwise Good Condition. Rare. (AMR-50-1A)

Rand, Ayn
THE FOUNTAINHEAD
New York Bobbs Merrill 1943. Cloth, 8vo, 754 pages. Later printing of the first edition, with no printings stated but with all the other first edition points. In the second state dustjacket. Red cloth lettered in gilt on the front panel and spine . The dustjacket features a $3.00 price at the base of the front flat and a photo of the author along with three reviews of the book at the rear. All points are present: Page 9: The "9" looks like an "o" at the bottom. Page 321, Line 5: "referred" is spelled "refrred". Page 381, Line 4: The "G" in "G. W. " is slightly smaller. Page 480, Line 2: "Dominique" is spelled "Domininque". Rand was born Alisa Zinov'yevna Rosenbaum in 1905, into a middle-class family living in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the eldest of three daughters (Alisa, Natasha, and Nora) . Her parents were, Zinovy Zacharovich Rosenbaum and Anna Borisovna Rosenbaum, agnostic and largely non-observant Jews. Her father was a chemist and a successful pharmaceutical entrepreneur who earned the privilege of living outside the Jewish Pale of Settlement. (Wikipedia, 2010) . This book was Rand's first major literary success which became a huge seller, matching the later popularity of Atlas Shrugged. Made into a Hollywood film in 1949, with Gary Cooper and Patricia Neal in the lead roles, it has become an enduring piece of literature, more popular now than when published in 1943. On the surface, it is a story of one man, Howard Roark, and his struggles as an architect in the face of a successful rival, Peter Keating, and a newspaper columnist, Ellsworth Toohey. But the book addresses a number of universal themes: the strength of the individual, the tug between good and evil, the threat of fascism. Light use wear to cloth. Inside hinges are starting, but no markings, completely clean inside. Jacket has sunned spine and wear, especially at crown of spine, but is attractive. Overall Good Condition in Good Jacket.
