Weinreich (1864-1969) was a Yiddish linguist, historian, editor. Born in Kuldiga, Weinreich made his debut as a Yiddish writer at the age of 13, and became a contributor to various Yiddish, Russian, German, and later English publications. After studying at the universities of St. Petersburg and Berlin, he completed a doctoral thesis on the history of Yiddish philology at the University of Marburg. Early in his career Weinreich became a prominent educator in various capacities, ranging from the teaching of Yiddish literature at the Vilna Yiddish Teachers Seminary to serving as leader of a Yiddish scouting movement, Di Bin. He was instrumental in giving Yiddish linguistics a solid, scholarly footing. Co-founder with Nokhem Shtif, Elias Tcherikover, and Zalmen Rejzen of the YIVO Institute, and YIVOs guiding spirit, he was largely responsible for its achieving a worldwide reputation. As director of YIVOs Research Training Division and organizer of its graduate school, Weinreich successfully educated young Yiddish scholars, among them, his son, Uriel Weinreich. At the World Congress of Linguistics in Copenhagen, he lectured on Yiddish as an Object of General Linguistics, and in 1940, he immigrated with his son Uriel to the U. S. , where he became the countrys first university professor of Yiddish, teaching Yiddish language, literature, and folklore at the College of the City of New York and Columbia University, while serving as the scholarly director of YIVO. Weinreichs wide array of books and studies include his magnum opus, Geshikhte fun der Yidisher Shprakh, the culmination of a half century of research on Yiddish sociolinguistics, tracing the thousand-year development of Ashkenazi culture and the Yiddish language as integral to the Jewish way of life. He studied the development of Yiddish from its origins in Germany, through Eastern Europe and into the second diaspora, creating the basic concepts and theoretical tools of the linguistic study of Jewish languages. Prominent among his other works are Hitlers Profesorn probably the best documented indictment of German scholarship during the Nazi regime; Shturemvint, sketches on 17th-century Jewish history; Bilder fun der Yidisher Literatur-Geshikhte; Der Veg tsu Undzer Yugnt, a socio-psychological study of Jewish youth in Eastern Europe; and Di Shvartse Pintelekh, a history of alphabets. Weinreich translated Homer, Freud, and Ernst Toller into Yiddish and edited the periodicals Yidishe Filologye, Filologishe Shriftn, Yivo-Bleter, and the critical edition of S. Ettingers works, N. Stutchkoffs Oytser fun der Yidisher Shprakh, Y. L. Cahans Shtudyes vegn Yidisher Folkshafung, and Yidishe Folkslider mit Melodyes (Schaechter and Baumgarten in EJ, 2007) . Hinge repair. NIMUKE RIDBAZ : PERUSH `AL HA-TORAH.
(FT) 4to. 44, 30 leaves. 1st edition. In Hebrew. Deinard 579, Mishkin 39. Goldman 721: Ridbaz (the acronym by wich Willowsky is popularly referred to) was born in Kobrin, Poland, in 1845 and was known as a child prodigy. Hebecame the rabbi of Izvolin in 1874. That same year he published his first work, Migadol Erez, which was widely lauded. He then served as a rabbi in Robruysk before becoming a dayyan in Vilna
. He became the rabbi of Slutsk in 1890 and was subsequently known as the Slutsker Rov. Shortly after settling in Slutsk he founded a yeshivah that emerged as one of the preeminent Lithuanian yeshivot. In 1900, when he traveled to America, he was considered the ranking European Torah personality to arrive in the United States since Rabbi Jacob Joseph (Rothkoff [1968] 559) . In 1903 he agreed to accept the position of chief Rabbi of Chicago though he was at once enmeshed in controversy, as his attempts to regulate kashruth threatened the vested interests of R. Zevi Simeon Album. He settled in Safed in 1905, was recognized as its chief Rabbi, and established a yeshivah
During his lifetime he was priviledged to observe the universal acceptance which his commentaries on the Palestinian [Jeruslam] Talmud were accorded. Until this very day, all rabbinical scholars who consult the Jerusalem Talmud utilize the Radbazs explanation and annotations (Rothkoff)
. This commentary on Genesis and Exodus includes a critique of Sabbath observance, education, kashruth supervision, religious functionaries and the free press in America. His response and commentaries are known the world over. SUBJECT(S) : Bible. O. T. Genesis commentaries; Bible. O. T. Exodus commentaries. OCLC lists 16 copies worldwide. (jt) Wolfson, Harry Austryn) ; Lieberman, Saul.
SEFER HA-YOVEL LIKHVOD TSVI WOLFSON
In Hebrew. Jerusalem/New York: American Academy for Jewish Research, 1965. Cloth. 8vo. Contains illustration and portraits. Wolfson (1887-1974) was a historian of philosophy. "Wolfson-whose writings are marked by a mastery of the philosophic literature in the several languages in which it was written, penetrating analysis, clarity of exposition, and felicity of style-wrote many books and articles. His early articles, several of which dealt with issues in the philosophies of Crescas and Spinoza, were followed by his first book, Crescas' Critique of Aristotle, which, though completed in 1918, was not published until 1929. The volume contains a critical edition of part of Crescas' Or Adonai (the section dealing with the 25 propositions which appear in the introduction to the second part of Maimonides' Guide) , an exemplary English translation, and an introduction; but of special importance are the copious notes which take up more than half of the volume. In these notes Wolfson discusses, with great erudition, the origin and development of the terms and arguments discussed by Crescas and he clarifies Crescas' often enigmatic text" [Arthur Hyman in EJ]. SUBJECT(S) : Judaism - History. Gilt lettering on spine. Ex-library with usual markings and some slight shelf wear. Otherwise, in Very Good condition. (FEST-6-4a).

YAM LIEDER = SEA SONG
Original wraps. 4to. 4 pages. 30 cm. Second edition. Words in romanized Yiddish; full text in Yiddish on p. [4]. Front portrait of Bialik. Yiddish song by the famous poet Bialik. First published 1916. Bialik composed his sea poems ('Yam lider') in Yiddish in 1908 and published them in a Zionist-oriented anthology just before his first visit to Eretz Yisrael in 1909. The small cycle of three pseudo-naive poems was defined by the poet as a translation from the prominent medieval poet Rabbi Yehuda Halevi. However, this cycle of poems is, in fact, a free adaptation of diverse motifs from Halevi, imbued with contemporary colours and revealing Bialik's intimate secrets.
Bialik wrote these Zionist poems ('Yam lider') in the language of the Jewish masses, telling his ideological adversaries in an indirect and subtle way that if he turns to the writing of poems in Yiddish, it is merely for ideological purposes, and not because he agrees with their credo. Indeed, the role of these poems in many Zionist circles has been long acknowledged. (Khulyot; Journal of Yiddish Research; No. 8 Winter 2003) . Subjects: Songs, Yiddish -- United States. OCLC lists 5 copies of this edition. Institutional marks on wraps, light pencilling throughout, lightly soiled wraps, otherwise fresh. Good - condition. (MUSIC-3-40) Xx

(Jt) Zeitlin, Aaron.
BEN HA-ESH VEHA-YESHA` : POEMAH DRAMATIT.
(FT) 8vo. 391 pages. In Hebrew. SUBJECT(S) : Poetry, Hebrew. "[Zeitlin] grew up in Gomel, Vilna, and Warsaw. His early poetic works were lyrical; later, philosophic concepts appeared in his verses, and then followed an attempt to express mystical religious insights within formal rhythmic structures. A philosophic aesthete deeply rooted in Jewish tradition and mysticism, Zeitlin's lyrics are often contemplative liturgic hymns. Well versed in world literature, Zeitlin wrote with equal facility in Hebrew and Yiddish. [In 1926] he became literary editor of the Warsaw Yiddish daily Unzer Ekspres. When [WWII] came, he was saved; in the spring of 1939, Maurice Schwartz invited him to New York for the Yiddish Art Theater's premiere of his play. The war prevented Zeitlin's return to his family, all of whom were killed by the Nazis. As contributor to the New York Yiddish daily Jewish Morning Journal and professor of Hebrew literature at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, Zeitlin profoundly influenced the American Jewish scene after World War II. His Hebrew essays, poems, and lectures during his frequent visits to Israel similarly influenced Hebrew literature. " (EJ, 2007) Good condition. (HebLit-5-14)

(FT) 12mo. 174 pages. Photograph illustration plates. In Hebrew. SUBJECT(S) : Herzl, Theodor, 1860-1904. OCLC lists 12 copies worldwide. "The son of a distinguished merchant family in Minsk, Zitron was educated at Lithuanian yeshivot. While studying at the Volozhin yeshivah, he became attracted to the Haskalah and in 1876 moved to Vienna, where he became friendly with P. Smolenskin. After studying for several years in Germany, he began his journalistic career, and for more than 50 years contributed to the Yiddish press and to nearly all the Hebrew periodicals in the Diaspora. In the 1880s to 1890s, he wrote short stories, one of which, "Yonah Potah" (1887) , aroused popular attention. He joined the Hibbat Zion movement in its early days and translated L. Pinsker 's Autoemanzipation into Hebrew. From 1904 Zitron lived in Vilna and edited various newspapers and anthologies. Of special interest are a series of articles on the Hebrew press published in Haolam. Based mainly on Zitron's personal experiences and recollections, the articles contain material of historic value, particularly on Ha-Maggid, Ha-Meliz, Ha-Zefirah, Ha-Karmel, Ha-Levanon, Ha-Emet, and Ha-Kol. He also wrote about the history of the Yiddish press in the 19th century. Zunz (1794-1886) , born and educated in Germany, was a well-known historian. An heir to European Enlightenment, he was a founded of the idea of the "Science of Judaism. " In that vein, he fruitlessly hoped that Jewish studies would be taught in universities as a regular academic discipline, and that he'd be able to do the teaching. He believed that Jewish literature and learning was part of the broader scope of human affairs, including the sciences, and should not be shut up merely in discussions of religious matters. For his seventieth birthday, a foundation was set up to fund Zunz's and other similar scholarship. He continued to work until 1874, when his wife's death left him seriously depressed. (jt)Deutsch, Gotthard.
ISRAEL BRUNA; AN HISTORICAL TRAGEDY IN FIVE ACTS.
12mo. 95 pages. First edition. Play based on the life of 15th Century Jew in Brunn (Brno), Czech Republic, Israel Brunn ben Hayyim. The book's provenance is a virtual who's who of the Reform movement in America: it is the copy of Kaufman Kohler, warmly inscribed and dated (Cincinnati, Sep. 1908) to him on the front endpaper by the author, Gotthard Deutsch. The same endpaper then bears the later ownership signature of a young "Solomon B. Freehof 1932." SUBJECT (S) : Tragedies; American drama -- 20th century. Deutsch (1859-1921) was born in Moravia and studied at Breslau Jewish Theological Seminary and Vienna University. In 1891 he left Europe for Hebrew Union College. In the United States, he became an advocate of Reform Judaism, but was a moderate and "was known for his sympathies toward Orthodoxy. "(EJ) Kohler (1843-1926) was born in Bavaria and received his doctorate in 1867. "His university studies had shattered Kohler's Orthodoxy and his doctoral thesis, Der Segen Jacobs, took such a radical viewpoint that no rabbinic position was open to him. " In 1869, at the suggestion of Abraham Geiger, Kohler moved to the United States, leading congregations first in Detroit, Chicago and New York. An anti-Zionist, active member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and president of Hebrew Union College, he was a Reform leader. "[In 1885, ] replying to attacks by Alexander Kohut, he published a series of sermons entitled Backward or Forward (1885) . The outcome was his convening of the Pittsburg Conference of Reform rabbis and its adoption of a radical program on the basis of Kohler's draft. In 1903 Kohler was appointed president of Hebrew Union College and set about immediately to improve the curriculum and to bring fresh talent to the faculty. Upon his retirement, Kohler received the title of president emeritus. " (Temkin, EJ). "Freehof, [1892-1990] born in London, was taken to the United States in 1903 by his parents, who settled in Baltimore... He graduated from the University of Cincinnati and a year later was ordained at Hebrew Union College, whose faculty he then joined. After serving as a chaplain with the American forces in Europe during World War I, Freehof became professor of liturgy at Hebrew Union College. In 1924 he became rabbi of Congregation Kehillath Anshe Maarav in Chicago, and in 1934 he was appointed rabbi of Congregation Rodef Shalom in Pittsburgh. He remained at Rodef Shalom until his retirement in 1966. Freehof's scholarly endeavors were largely in two fields. The first was Jewish liturgy. In 1930 he was appointed chairman of the Reform Committee on Liturgy of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, whose work led to the publication of the two-volume Union Prayer Book and the Union Home Prayer Book, both of which stressed relevance to modern life and the inclusion of contemporary material in the service. He served as President of the CCAR from 1943 to 1945. His second main interest was the development of Jewish law as displayed in the literature of the responsa and its bearing on modern Jewish practice. He was appointed head of the Responsa Committee of the Central Conference of American Rabbis in 1955." (EJ, 2007). Wear to boards, especially at corners and spine, but good, solid condition. " David Einhorn was a rabbi, preacher, and author; leader of the Reform Movement in the U. S. "Olat Tamid didn't just shorten the traditional service; it was a creative work expressing the Einhorn's Reform ideal of the universality of humanity with an anti-particularistic strain. In its modern approach to worship, it cut out Kol Nidrei; it utilized various Sephardic piyyutim (religious poems) ; it dropped the Musaf service entirely; it did not include blessings for the blowing of shofar or the lighting of Chanukah lights; it de-emphasized Israel as the Chosen People; and it removed all references to a personal Messiah, a return to Israel, or the resumption of the sacrificial cult. (jt)Heighway, Osborn W. Trenery.
LEILA ADA, THE JEWISH CONVERT: AN AUTHENTIC MEMOIR.
Philadelphia: Presbyterian Board of Publication, 1853. 12mo. Vii, 230 pages. First edition. Tissued frontispiece engraving of Leila Ada, inscribed "Yours in Jesus, Leila Ada. " A quote from the first chapter: "The Mishna is said to be an oral law, received from the lips of God, and intended as an exponent of his written law. But we should transgress the purity which religion demands, were we to quote some of its puerile and absurd follies. If those who penned it set about their work with an intention to shock common sense, and load the Jewish religion with contempt, they could scarcely have acquitted themselves better. And let no one suppose that our strictures are unkind: any one at all acquainted with the Mishna, will at once perceive them to be within the bounds of that charity and pity, which we owe to those who err. Indeed, it were but too easy to quote passages which would justify our severest censures. But withal, the Mishna is surrounded with a degree of obscurity and hardness, owing to its orientalisms, and a considerable pervasion of a sort of Hebræo-Grecism in its structure. This obscurity has given rise to another commentary, called the Gemara, or completion. One Gemara, written in Palestine, forms with the Mishna, the Jerusalem Talmud, and another, written at Babylon, composes the Babylonish Talmud, Thus the Mishna, which the Jews declare to be God's own interpretation of his law, requires interpretation from man, and the whole together forms a mighty work of twelve folio volumes. These are the volumes which contain the whole of the Jewish divinity; for, dishonouring to God, they have almost completely withdrawn the Jews from the study of Moses and the Prophets. In common with the rest of her nation, the Talmud formed the basis of Leila's religious education. Of the Old Testament she knew comparatively little. It is far from certain, indeed, that she knew a great deal of the Talmud. For this there were causes: -first, she did not like its study: she tells us in her Reflections, that while believing in its divinity, as she was instructed, she experienced a smothered dislike to many of its forms, observances, and precepts. 'I felt it, ' she says, 'smouldering at the bottom of my heart long before I had moral courage to permit a single thought upon it. I shuddered at my suspicions as blasphemous, yet I could not conquer them. But as the Spirit of God opened my eyes, I felt no difficulty in fully avowing my severest thoughts upon the inane, absurd, debasing studies of the Talmud. I felt no compunction while I openly declared to my own heart that it was an impure, stupid fabrication, composed by fallen and sinful man. ' What a volume is contained in these few thrilling sentences! Would the sons of Jacob speak out, how many would tell us the same story? Impossible it is but that among them there are thousands who, while they dare not repudiate the Talmud, are conscious of a feeling of offence at its impurities, and absurdities. Secondly, her father, although strictly a Jew in belief and profession, gave himself little trouble about their requirements and observances, and, therefore, was very far from pressing them upon his daughter.
