Kaplan (1881-1983) , born in Lithuania, was a founder of the Reconstructionist movement in the United States. His family moved to the U. S. When he was nine, and he was later ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary and was a rabbi in New York. In 1909 Kaplan began working at the Seminary, under Solomon Schechter, first as a dean and soon after began a half-century long teaching career. His Reconstructionist views "[meant] that Judaism should be considered from a pragmatic, historical point of view, rather than a metaphysical, revelational one[, that t]he focus of the content of Jewish life is the Jewish people, its needs, and its responses to challenge, rather than revealed texts or metaphysical constructions....Tradition can guide but must not dictate. EXTREMELY RARE single volume containing all 1894 issues of the daily Hebrew newspaper "Ha-Tsefira". This influential publication, published in Warsaw and read throughout the Jewish world, featured news in matters of international politics, global economy, science and religion, literature and so forth. The issues were sent by mail, and still feature contemporary Austrian-Hungarian stamps. " A first edition of Nahum Sokolow's first published work, written in response to the pogroms that were being unleashed across the region and fueling the new Zionist movement, and published in Warsaw, the site of the 1881 Christmas Pogrom. In fact, âThe term 'pogrom' became commonly used in English after a large-scale wave of anti-Jewish riots swept through south-western Imperial Russia (present-day Ukraine and Poland) from 1881 to 1884; during this time, more than 200 anti-Jewish events occurred in the Russian Empire, notably pogroms in Kiev, Warsaw and Odessa" (Wikipedia) . ÂThe First Aliya followed pogroms in Russia in 1881-1882, with most of the olim (immigrants) coming from Eastern Europeâ¦. Members of Hibbat Zion and Bilu, two early Zionist movements that were the mainstays of the First Aliya, defined their goal as 'the political, national, and spiritual resurrection of the Jewish people in Palestine'" (Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 2019) . Sokolow (1859-1936) was a Zionist leader, author, and pioneer of Hebrew journalism.
