‎1st Edition. Period Black boards, 8vo. [xxiv], 364 pages ; 22 cm. In German. Title translates into English as, "Revelation According to the Doctrine of the Synagogue. " The first volume (of an eventual 4 that were published) of Salomon Ludwig Steinhams Magnum Opus. Steinham "is often regarded as the first theologian of the modern era. " (HaCohen, 2010) "Solomon Ludwig Steinheim (17891866) was a German physician, poet, and philosopher In 1820 he published a Pamphlet on the grasshopper, and in 1842 one on animal instinct. His treatise on the pathology of tumors (1846) was his chief contribution to medical literature. His main attention, however, was devoted to philosophy and religion; he was a zealous adherent of Immanuel Kant. As early as 1818 he had written an essay on ecstasis; and in 1835 he published the first volume of his Die Offenbarung nach dem Lehrbegriff der Synagoge. In this work, for which he prepared himself by a careful study of comparative religion, he, though a freethinker, endeavored to raise revelation from a religious belief to a philosophic truth. While, according to him, all important philosophic systems lead to the dualistic struggle between good and evil, the revelation of the Old Testament places in the forefront as axioms creatio ex nihilo, and, consequently, the unity of God, belief in which is essential to religion and morality. " (Wikipeida, 2017) The subsequent 3 volumes were published in 1856, 1863, and 1865. SUBJECT(S) : Judaism. Revelation -- Judaism. Jewish philosophy. OCLC lists 19 copies worldwide. Inscribed by a previous owner with nice calligraphy on the back of the front board in 1841. Handwritten edit to one word on page 14. Spine rebacked, some foxing and toning. Pages slightly worn. ‎Steinman, Eliezer‎

‎BE’ER HA’HASIDUT: MISHNAT HABAD (VOLUME 1)‎

‎Hardcover, 8vo, 398 pages, portraits. In Hebrew. Steinman (1892-1970) was a “Hebrew writer. Born in Obodovka, Steinman was ordained a rabbi, and began to write at an early age, but it took some time before his first stories appeared in print. Steinman pursued literary work and was also a part-time Hebrew teacher in Odessa. He contributed regularly to Ha-Zefirah and worked on translations, which were not published until a later date. During this period, he began to publish long stories, as well as essays and articles. In 1920 he left Russia. During those unsettled times, having been mistaken for the Yiddish writer Baynush Steinman, a rumor was spread of his death, and he was eulogized in the Hebrew daily press and in literary periodicals, as well as in foreign-language publications. Steinman published “Teshuvah le-Maspidai, ” in Ha-? Efirah. Settling in Warsaw, he continued his regular contributions of stories, essays, and articles to Ha-Zefirah and wrote for Der Moment. Steinman founded the monthly, Kolot, which provided a forum for young writers. It was also the first attempt to compare the thought of R. Na? Man of Bratslav and Aaron Samuel Tamares with those of St. Francis of Assisi, Ibsen, and others. During his Warsaw period he published a collection of stories, a novel, a collection of articles, and two Yiddish books of essays and stories on the pogroms against Ukrainian Jews…. In later years he also undertook a massive project designed to make the resources of Jewish culture more readily available by rendering the texts in his own version and adding his own introductory notes and essays. The first book, Be’er ha-Hasidut, was followed by a series of nine books on Hasidism and a collection of hasidic stories, Kankan ha-Kesef. He also wrote Be’er ha-Talmud, on the Talmud” (Kressel in EJ, 2007) . OCLC lists 1 copy worldwide (U of Manitoba) . Hinge repair. Chipping and wear to dust jacket, fragile. Bumped cover corners and edges. Otherwise, good condition. (Hasid-4-15)‎

Steinman was the most prolific Hebrew writer of his generation. While the essays published (in Davar and in the book form, Perudot (1965) ) , comprise a large part of his total output, works still in manuscript would fill dozens of volumes of fiction, memoirs, and autobiography.
