‎DIE OFFENBARUNG NACH DEM LEHRBEGRIFFE DER SYNAGOGE EIN SHIBOLETH‎

‎1st Edition. Period Black boards, 8vo. [xxiv], 364 pages ; 22 cm. In German. Title translates into English as, "Revelation According to the Doctrine of the Synagogue. " The first volume (of an eventual 4 that were published) of Salomon Ludwig Steinhams Magnum Opus. Steinham "is often regarded as the first theologian of the modern era. " (HaCohen, 2010) "Solomon Ludwig Steinheim (17891866) was a German physician, poet, and philosopher In 1820 he published a Pamphlet on the grasshopper, and in 1842 one on animal instinct. His treatise on the pathology of tumors (1846) was his chief contribution to medical literature. His main attention, however, was devoted to philosophy and religion; he was a zealous adherent of Immanuel Kant. As early as 1818 he had written an essay on ecstasis; and in 1835 he published the first volume of his Die Offenbarung nach dem Lehrbegriff der Synagoge. In this work, for which he prepared himself by a careful study of comparative religion, he, though a freethinker, endeavored to raise revelation from a religious belief to a philosophic truth. While, according to him, all important philosophic systems lead to the dualistic struggle between good and evil, the revelation of the Old Testament places in the forefront as axioms creatio ex nihilo, and, consequently, the unity of God, belief in which is essential to religion and morality. " (Wikipeida, 2017) The subsequent 3 volumes were published in 1856, 1863, and 1865. SUBJECT(S) : Judaism. Revelation -- Judaism. Jewish philosophy. OCLC lists 19 copies worldwide. Inscribed by a previous owner with nice calligraphy on the back of the front board in 1841. Handwritten edit to one word on page 14. Spine rebacked, some foxing and toning. Pages slightly worn. In Good+ Condition. (GER-59-65)‎

‎Steinman, Eliezer‎

‎BE’ER HA’HASIDUT: MISHNAT HABAD (VOLUME 1)‎

‎Hardcover, 8vo, 398 pages, portraits. In Hebrew. Steinman (1892-1970) was a “Hebrew writer. Born in Obodovka, Steinman was ordained a rabbi, and began to write at an early age, but it took some time before his first stories appeared in print. Steinman pursued literary work and was also a part-time Hebrew teacher in Odessa. He contributed regularly to Ha-Zefirah and worked on translations, which were not published until a later date. During this period, he began to publish long stories, as well as essays and articles. In 1920 he left Russia. During those unsettled times, having been mistaken for the Yiddish writer Baynush Steinman, a rumor was spread of his death, and he was eulogized in the Hebrew daily press and in literary periodicals, as well as in foreign-language publications. Steinman published “Teshuvah le-Maspidai, ” in Ha-? Efirah. Settling in Warsaw, he continued his regular contributions of stories, essays, and articles to Ha-Zefirah and wrote for Der Moment. Steinman founded the monthly, Kolot, which provided a forum for young writers. It was also the first attempt to compare the thought of R. Na? Man of Bratslav and Aaron Samuel Tamares with those of St. Francis of Assisi, Ibsen, and others. During his Warsaw period he published a collection of stories, a novel, a collection of articles, and two Yiddish books of essays and stories on the pogroms against Ukrainian Jews…. In later years he also undertook a massive project designed to make the resources of Jewish culture more readily available by rendering the texts in his own version and adding his own introductory notes and essays. The first book, Be’er ha-Hasidut, was followed by a series of nine books on Hasidism and a collection of hasidic stories, Kankan ha-Kesef. He also wrote Be’er ha-Talmud, on the Talmud” (Kressel in EJ, 2007) . OCLC lists 1 copy worldwide (U of Manitoba) . Hinge repair. Chipping and wear to dust jacket, fragile. Bumped cover corners and edges. Otherwise, good condition. (Hasid-4-15)‎

Hasidism. Baal Shem Tov, ca. 1700-1760. Steinman (1892-1970) was a “Hebrew writer. During his Warsaw period he published a collection of stories, a novel, a collection of articles, and two Yiddish books of essays and stories on the pogroms against Ukrainian Jews. In 1924, Steinman settled in Tel Aviv. He wrote for Haaretz and Ha-Olam and, together with other young writers, became active in the Writers’ Union. On behalf of the Union he edited its literary collection Mesibbah and, afterward, its organ Ketuvim. Here he continued his attempts to find a synthesis between ancient and modern Jewish literature and culture, and world literature. He published stories and novels, including Zugot and Duda’im, and collections of essays: Ha-Yesod ba-Hinnukh, Meshihiyyut, Be-Mizreh ha-Zeman, and Sha’ar ha-Vikku’ah. When Ketuvim closed, he became a columnist for Davar, also contributing regularly to literary periodicals and collections in Israel and abroad. Steinman claims that the primary function of a critical essay is to improve man’s view on life and art, and that therefore it is permissible and desirable to apply present-day views in studying works of the past. His memoirs contain a great deal of literary gossip. In his reconstruction of the “conversations, ” Steinman aims at giving a very subjective account of the conversants’ views rather than a stenographic recording of their actual remarks. Steinman was the most prolific Hebrew writer of his generation” (Kressel in EJ, 2007) . Hinge repair. Chipping and cover edges. Bumped cover corners. Light yellowing to pages. Steinschneider (1816-1907), was the "father of modern Jewish bibliography , among the founders of the "Science of Judaism" (Wissenschaft des Judentums ). Born the son of the Talmud scholar Jacob Steinschneider and Hani Zadek-Weizenkorn in Prossnitz, Moravia, Steinschneider received his early education in his native town, where he was influenced by his uncle Gideon Brecher. He also attended a Christian school and studied music, an interest he maintained throughout his life. Steinschneider's literary output was tremendous; his bibliography contains more than 1,400 items. His main lifelong interest was the study of the relationship between Jewish and general cultures, especially during medieval times. Steinschneider spent most of his life in the pursuit of his great scholarly projects, but he also wrote some lighter belletristic and journalistic works. He also commented - though rarely - on the major contemporary events of his day and for a while was actively involved in a society founded by his friend Abraham Benisch , the aim of which was the promotion of Jewish resettlement in Erez Israel. He withdrew from the group in the early 1840s and later assumed a very negative attitude toward political Zionism" (Schmelzer in EJ 2007). OCLC lists 26 copies worldwide. Yellowing of pages. ‎8vo. 132 pages. In German. Volume 1, Nos. 1-6. Complete 1st volume. Reprint. SUBJECT (S) : Hebrew literature – bibliography – periodicals; Jews – bibliography – periodicals. OCLC lists 9 copies worldwide. Born in Moravia, Steinscheider (1816-1907) was the “father of modern Jewish bibliography. ” In the early part of his life, he was a Jack-of-all-trades, teaching languages in private homes and in schools (his students included Solomon Schecter) , administering the Jewish oath, officiating at weddings, translating textbooks, and preaching. In 1869, he was appointed to the Royal Library of Berlin, where he remained for the rest of his life. Originally in pursuit of his own work, Steinscheider compiled library catalogs – at a time when there was no particular cataloging system – and topical bibliographies. He also cataloged the books printed prior to 1732 in Bodleian Library in Oxford, at particular invitation from its head librarian, creating the Catalogus Librorum Hebraeorum in Bibliotheca Bodleiana. ‎DIE HEBRÄISCHEN UBERSETZUNGEN DES MITTELALTERS UND DIE JUDEN ALS DOLMETSCHER; EIN BEITRAG ZUR LITERATURGESCHICHTE DES MITTELALTERS‎

‎Reprint of the 1st edition of 1893. Original cloth, 8vo. XXXIV+1077 pages. In German. Title translates to: “The Hebrew Translations of the Middle Ages and the Jews As Interpreters: A Contribution to the Literature History of the Middle Ages. ” “One of his [Steinschneider’s] most important original works is Die Hebräischen Übersetzungen des Mittelalters und die Juden als Dolmetscher: Ein Beitrag zur Literaturgeschichte des Mittelalters; meistenteils nach Handschriftlichen Quellen, Berlin, 1893, planned in 1849. While writing on Jewish literature for Ersch and Gruber's Allgemeine Encyclopädie der Wissenschaften und Künste (1844–47) , he became conscious of the lack of sources on the influence of foreign works on Jewish literature. He determined to supplement the monographs of Huet, Jourdain, Wüstenfeld, and Johann Georg Wenrich on the history of translations by one having the Neo-Hebrew literature as its subject. In 1880 the Institut de France offered a prize for a complete bibliography of the Hebrew translations of the Middle Ages; Steinschneider won it with two monographs written in French in 1884 and 1886. His Übersetzungen is an enlarged translation into German of these” (Wikipedia, 2018) . SUBJECT(S) : Vertalen. Vertalingen. Hebreeuws. Middeleeuwen. Vertalers. Joden. OCLC: 71441205. ‎Der Talmud : Einführung, Texte, Erläuterungen. Günter Stemberger 2., durchges. Aufl.‎
