"Die Präliminarien zu Tucholskys beliebtestem Werk sind vergleichsweise prosaisch, folgt man den Angaben des Autors in der ironischen Vorrede des Werks; danach habe der Verleger Ernst Rowohlt, marktorientiert, seinen Hausautor um 'eine kleine Liebesgeschichte' ersucht, 'zart im Gefühl, kartoniert, leicht ironisch und mit einem bunten Umschlag'. Pekuniären Erwägungen selbst nicht abgeneigt, konzipierte Tucholsky das Werk zunächst als 'Fingerübung' (an M. Fuchs, 1931) für ein umfangreicheres Buch über Frauen; geblieben ist von diesem Vorhaben nur dieser kurze Roman, mit dem Tucholsky souverän an den Klischees der gängigen Liebes- und Reiseromane vorbeischrieb." Noy's contribution to Jewish folklore has been pioneering. He founded and directed the Haifa Ethnological Museum and Folklore Archives (1956–1982) and edited the Israel Folktale Archives Publications series until 1981. He founded the Israel Folklore Archives, the largest treasure of Jewish folktales recorded in Israel. Title translates to “The Medem Sanitorium.” Translated into Yiddish by Mosheh Lokiec. Zygmunt Turkow (1896–1970) was a Polish actor, director, playwright and director of Jewish origin from Warsaw, who became famous for roles in the pre-war Jewish films and stage plays in Yiddish. His brother, Jonas Turkow, was also a noted actor and stage manager. Shortly after German invasion of Poland in 1939 he left Poland together with his second wife. In 1940 he settled in Brazil.
