Hertz Grosbard was a famous reciter of modern yiddish literature. Arthur Kolnik was born in Stanislaviv (today Ivano-Frankovsk) , Ukraine in 1890. Jewish painter and printmaker. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow in the studio of Professor Joseph Mehoffer. The artist was mobilized to serve in the army during World War I. Exhibited in the United States of America in 1921. Upon return Kolnik settled in Chernivtsi. In 1931 the artist moved to Paris. There he worked as an illustrator. Tel Aviv Art Museum organized a major exhibition of works by Kolnik in 1968. Kolnik died in Paris in 1972. Subjects: Elocutionists - Biography. Jewish actors - Biography. RARE monograph on the formation of the most widely consulted legal code in Judaism the Shulchan Aruch, authored in Safed, Israel, by Yosef Karo in 1563 and published in Venice two years later. This book is an early work by Chaim Tschernowitz (pseudonym Rav Za'ir; 1871-1949), an eminent talmudic scholar and Hebrew author, who obtained semikha from Isaac Elchanan Spektor of Kovno in 1896 and moved the following year to Odessa where he founded his own yeshivah, eventually transforming it into a rabbinical seminary (1907) which attracted many students from the Jewish intelligentsia in Russia, including Hayyim Nahman Bialik and Joseph Klausner. Tchernowitz received a Ph.D. from the University of Würzburg in 1914 and settled in the United States in 1923, where he taught Talmud at the Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. 225x160mm. 79 pages. He founded and directed the Haifa Ethnological Museum and Folklore Archives (19561982) and edited the Israel Folktale Archives Publications series until 1981. He founded the Israel Folklore Archives, the largest treasure of Jewish folktales recorded in Israel. He was director of the Hebrew University Folklore Research Center from 1968 and edited Studies, its journal. He served as the Encyclopaedia Judaica departmental editor for folklore.
