Die deutsche Ausgabe beginnt von links, die hebräische von rechts, das Buch hat also zwei illustrierte Deckeltitel und zwei Titelseiten und zwei Einleitungen, lediglich die Legenden auf den Bildtafeln sind zweisprachig. Viele der Abbildungen sind Fotomontagen oder dann - mit den auf den Doppelseiten einander gegenüber gestellten Abbildungen - eigentliche Bild-Kompositionen aus Form, Licht oder Inhalt. Selten, namentlich in so gutem Zustand und mit dem transparenten Cellophanumschlag. Das vorliegende Exemplar gehörte in die Dokumentation der Herstellungsabteilung des Verlags, daher rühren die Bleistiftmarkierungen bei den Abbildungen. Hardcover Kanten etwas bestossen, Schnitt gering nachgedunkelt, oben etwas angestaubt, einige Seiten mit feiner Bleistiftmarkierung. SERIES: Regional history series of the American Jewish History Center of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Vorspan [1916-2002] was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1943. During his senior year, he served first as assistant director of the Seminary School of Jewish Studies and then as the program director of the 92nd Street Young Men's Hebrew Association. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the army as a chaplain, serving in Saipan until the end of World War II. Discharged when the war was over, he accepted a pulpit in Pasadena, California, where he established the first Reconstructionist Congregation in the West. He then joined the Brandeis Camp Institute as an associate director, where he established a reputation as a creative administrator and popular lecturer. In 1954, Vorspan was invited to become the first full-time registrar and instructor at the University of Judaism, which was then the West Coast branch of the Jewish Theological Seminary. He remained there for some 40 years, retiring in the early 1990s as associate professor of American Jewish history and senior vice president. Universally liked, he was instrumental in establishing the Pacific Southwest Coast Region of the United Synagogue, Camp Ramah in California, and the University's School of Fine Arts. Written with a Zionist bent for a Christian audience, Voss answers most questions in favor of Jewish nationalism. For the Arabs to permit a Jewish State in Palestine involves no sacrifice to the Arabs; on the contrary, it provides them with a progressive and democratic neighbor eager to create a joint future in which the hopes of both peoples may be realized. Includes a Statement of Principles of the American Christian Palestine Committee in which the committee declares that their support for the Jewish People is rooted in Christian values of social justice. During World War II, Dr. Voss founded and led the American Christian Palestine Committee. The group called for a Jewish national state to give refuge to survivors of the Nazi Holocaust. To that end, he became a vocal supporter of the partition of Palestine. Once Israel was established, he urged the United States to provide the aid that would enable the new state to absorb the many refugees then arriving. A total of six volumes were published, with two collected here Published Jerusalem: Institute for Commemoration of Galician Jewry. Extensively detailed genealogies of Galician rabbinical families are arranged alphabetically by surname. Most family sections include a genealogical chart. For prominent rabbis of each family biographical material is included, in particular rabbinical compositions, responsa correspondence and photographs. There is updated information of generations contemporaneous to the writing of the book. Many sources are quoted for each family and there is an extensive bibliography. This impressive and scholarly work is the most extensive and reliable source of rabbinical genealogy written in the twentieth century. Rabbi Meir Wunder was born in Haifa to a family which originated in Jaroslaw, Galicia. His rabbinic education was obtained at Poneveiz Yeshiva in Bnei Brak where he received rabbinical ordination from prominent rabbis. He also qualified as a rabbinical lawyer. After he attained general and pedagogical education and qualified for a B. A. , Rabbi Wunder taught at various schools. He holds qualification from the School of Librarianship of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and for many years managed the library at Poneveiz Yeshiva and other institutions. The principal part of his career was spent as a senior librarian at the National Library at the Hebrew University.
