They were accommodated in a castle in Wales [Gwrych Castle] and set up Hachshara centres in Bromsgrove and other places, as well as a Merkaz Limmud in Manchester to which members came from the Hachsharah centres for periods of three or six months for intensive Jewish studies. Later on a farm was bought at Thaxted in Essex which became not only a model Hachsharah centre but very quickly a successful agricultural venture which at one time won first prize for having the best milk yielding cow in Essex! With discussion of the celebration of the feast in Eretz Israel. Cloth, 28 pages, 12mo, 22 cm. In Hebrew. Epstein (1841-1918) was born in Staro-Konstantinov, Russia, to a wealthy family. Epstein leased some land near Kozmin in 1865 and worked it himself for many years, trying to persuade some of the local Jewish poor to do the same. During that period he developed an interest in natural sciences and built a laboratory, where he carried out various experiments. After his father's death Epstein left his farm and took over the family business. In 1861 he traveled to Western Europe, where he met some of the leading figures in Jewish scholarship (S. J. L. Rapoport, Z. Frankel, and M. Sachs) who greatly stimulated his interest in Jewish studies. Gradually, he liquidated his shares in the family business and devoted himself to research. Louis Weiss, rabbi and scholar, was born on February 17, 1848, in Kotay, Hungary. He received his rabbinical diploma from a school in Grosswardein, Hungary. Weiss immigrated to the United States and, in Chicago in 1876, he became a naturalized U. S. Citizen. He served as rabbi for several congregations in the South and in Columbus, Ohio (1894) ; Hamilton, Ontario; Palestine, Texas (1903-1905) and Braddock, Pennsylvania (1905-1909) .
