The original two volumes of the Minhag America prayer book had both been published in 1857, one with Hebrew-English text (Prayer Book for Public and Private Worship) and the other with Hebrew-German text (Gebet-Buch fur den offentlichen Gottesdienst und die Privat-Andacht). In the 1860s, he took the project up again, issuing a three volume series of his “Minhag Amerika”–the American Tradition–with the present volume for Yom Kipur (The Day of Atonement), as well as a volume for Rosh HaShanah (the Jewish New year) and a combined Jewish Hymnal and Psalter, all shaped by his view of Reform Judaism in America. This volume thus represents one of the first Reform prayer books for the High Holidays in the United States. Some of the prayers are translated both into English and German. Wise, was a pioneer of Reform Judaism in America and became its acknowledged leader and its institutional architect, organizing the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (1873) , the Hebrew Union College (1875) , and the Central Conference of American Rabbis (1889) . The reforms that he instituted sought to change or adapt Judaism to 19th century America. He was also an organizer and mover in the establishment of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, in 1889. Elected its president, he served until he died. Wise believed in uniting American Jewry and hoped to publish a new American reform prayer book titled "Minhag America. ” The Machzor presented here is part of this project. (See: Goldman 44). Published by Wise as third and last volume of his grand project for American-Jewish liturgy titled "Minhag America", this final volume is a collection of liturgical hymns, psalms and prayers in English and German. Singerman 2109.The original two volumes of the Minhag America prayer book had both been published in 1857, one with Hebrew-English text (Prayer Book for Public and Private Worship) and the other with Hebrew-German text (Gebet-Buch fur den offentlichen Gottesdienst und die Privat-Andacht). Wise here indicates that with this third volume includes additional new writings by Wise and others. Text in English and German on facing pages. Also includes detailed service instructions, religious notes, a table of torah readings and a table of contents. Wise’s Minhag America would become the standard liturgy of American Refom congragations from its original publication until the introduction of the Union Prayer Book in the 1890s. Of the three volumes issued in the 1860s, this Hymnal-Psalter remains the scarcest, far, far less common than the volumes for Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kipur, reflecting the centrality in American Reform Judaism of the High Holidays above other forms of daily liturgy. ‎1st edition. Cloth. 12mo. 83 pages. "As a literary production this little book shows: 1. There is a religion without mysteries or miracles, rational and self-evident. 2. This rational religion is taught in the Bible, called, in the Gentile phraseology, the Old Testament. 3. This scriptural and rational religion is Judaism. 4. Judaism, in its doctrines and duties, is eminently humane, universal, liberal, and progressive; in perfect harmony with modern science, criticism, and philosophy, and in full sympathy with universal liberty, equality, justice, and charity." Wise was a U. S. Rabbi and pioneer of Reform Judaism. He was "born in Steingrub, Bohemia and he lived in Prague and Vienna, and studied at various yeshivot. His later writings suggest that the ideas of the French Enlightenment must have influenced him in his younger days. In 1843 he became the rabbinical officiate (Religionsweiser) at Radnitz in Bohemia. The Hapsburg Empire offered bleak prospects for Wise personally and for the removal of disabilities suffered by Jews. He resolved to emigrate-whether with a view to pursuing the rabbinic calling is uncertain-and arrived in New York in 1846. The free atmosphere of America seemed to liberate in Wise capacities of which he had given no indication in Europe. He became rabbi of Congregation Beth El in Albany, N.Y., introducing reforms such as mixed pews, choral singing, and confirmation, designed to improve public worship. In 1854 Wise went to Cincinnati as rabbi of Congregation B'nai Jeshurun, remaining there for the rest of his life. Within a few months of his arrival he began to publish a weekly, The Israelite, later known as The American Israelite, and a German supplement Die Deborah. By the end of the year he established the short-lived Zion College, combining Hebrew and secular studies. In 1856 he published Minhag America, a curtailment with modifications of the traditional Hebrew ritual. Despite repeated setbacks, Wise always returned to his advocacy of a union of congregations, a common prayer book, and a college to train American rabbis. His interest was focused on one particular aspect of the Union's tasks-the establishment of a rabbinical college. He was appointed president of Hebrew Union College, which opened in 1875. For the remainder of his life Wise labored in the interests of the college. He ordained more than 60 rabbis, and by the time of his death had become the "founding father" of the Reform movement in America" (Temkin, EJ). Not the more common 1888 edition. In 1900 he launched his career as the rabbi of Congregation Beth Israel in Portland, Oregon; typical of the activists of the Progressive Era, he attacked ‘many of the social and political ills of contemporary America. ’ In 1893, he was appointed assistant to Rabbi Henry S. Jacobs of the Congregation B'nai Jeshurun, New York City, and later in the same year, minister to the same congregation. In 1906, concerning another rabbinical appointment, Wise made a major break with the established Reform movement over the ‘question whether the pulpit shall be free or whether the pulpit shall not be free, and, by reason of its loss of freedom, reft of its power for good’; in 1907 he established his Free Synagogue, starting the ‘free Synagogue’ movement. Rabbi Wise was an early supporter of Zionism, and his support for, and commitment to Political Zionism was very atypical of Reform Judaism, which was historically and decidedly non-Zionist since the Pittsburgh Platform in 1885. He was a founder of the New York Federation of Zionist Societies in 1897, and led in the formation of the national Federation of American Zionists (FAZ) , a forerunner of the Zionist Organization of America. At the Second Zionist Congress (Basel, 1898) , he was a delegate and secretary for the English language. Wise served as honorary secretary of FAZ, in close cooperation with Theodor Herzl until the latter's death in 1904. Wise, joining U. S. Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, Felix Frankfurter, and others laid the groundwork for a democratically elected nationwide organization of 'ardently Zionist' Jews, 'to represent Jews as a group and not as individuals'. In 1918, following national elections, this Jewish community convened the first American Jewish Congress in Philadelphia's historic Independence Hall” (Wikipedia, 2010) . They will observe the Sabbath … and they will establish many Talmud Torahs and the young students will be educated and they will observe [the Sabbath]. The rest depends on God and it is our obligation only to do what we can to strengthen ourselves, our children, and our children’s children’ (p. 15) .
