‎A DESCRIPTIVE GEOGRAPHY AND BRIEF HISTORICAL SKETCH OF PALESTINE.‎

‎1st edition. Original illustrated publisher's boards, 8vo, xxii, (2), 17-518, (1), (1 blank).Illustrated With Maps and Numerous Engravings. English interspersed with Hebrew. Frontispiece portrait of author, foldout maps of Land of Israel, lithographed views of Holy Places. Singerman 1161. The nineteenth century saw a dramatic growth in interest in the Holy Land due to new directions in Bible studies and the growing popularity of visiting the region. This renewed attention was reflected in the expanding body of literature of geographies and travelogues. One such Hebrew work was Joseph Schwarz's Tevuot ha-Aretz, published in Jerusalem in 1845. When Schwarz visited the United States, four years later, as a rabbinical emissary from the Holy Land he arranged for Isaac Leeser to translate and publish Tevuot ha-Aretz. When it appeared the following year as this work, "A Descriptive Geography and Brief Historical Sketch of Palestine," it was recognized as one of the most important Jewish works published in America up to that time. Leeser proudly stated in his introduction: "The execution of the whole (book] is the work of Jewish writers and artists, the drawings being executed by Mr. S. Shuster, a lithographer belonging to our Nation." Leeser further expressed his hope that the publication of the volume might "extend the knowledge of Palestine, and also to enkindle sympathy and kind acts for those of our brothers, who cling to the soil of our ancestors." Isaac Leeser was an American rabbi, educator, and author, founder of the Jewish press of America. "Leeser participated in all Jewish movements. He was the earnest promoter of all the national enterprises-the first congregational union, the first Hebrew day-schools, the first Hebrew college, the first Jewish publication society-and of numberless local undertakings. [His monthly magazine] "The "Occident" acquired a national and even an international reputation; the Maimonides' College, of which he was president, paved the way for future Jewish colleges in the United States; and his translation of the Bible became an authorized version for the Jews of America. ‎(Xt) Seixas, James. [Hebrew Teacher Of Mormon Leader Joseph Smith]‎

‎A MANUAL [OF] HEBREW GRAMMAR: WITH A VOCABULARY OF ROOTS, NOUNS, AND PARTICLES OF COMMON OCCURRENCE, FOR THE USE OF BEGINNERS‎

‎Third edition. Carefully revised, corrected, and improved.” Original board with paper label on front, as issued, 8vo, 83 pages ; 22 cm. In English with Hebrew. Singerman 1263. Goldman (183), notes, “Joshua Seixas, the son of Gershom Mendes Seixas (the minister of New York's Shearith Israel congregation), was born in New York in 1802. Little is known about his life. He taught in Shearith Israel's Hebrew school in the mid-1820s and he established the congregation's first choir. Seixas moved to Charlestown, MA, in the early 1830s and gave lessons in Hebrew. Among his pupils were Harvard students. Seixas began referring to himself as James while in Charlestown and it is assumed that he converted to Unitarian Christianity while there. Seixas then settled in Hudson, OH. He offered private Hebrew classes to students at Oberlin College, and later at Western Reserve University...He also taught groups of Mormons- the center of the movement at the time was in Kirtland, OH- and among his students were Joseph Smith, the founder of Mormonism, and Orson Hyde, another early leader of the movement. Seixas left Ohio in 1836 and he was living in Staten Island, NY, by 1838. It is not clear what his relationship to the Jewish community was in his later years. His death in 1874 is not mentioned in Shearith Israel's records, but the death of his wife is. (The two lived apart after retuning to New York.) Also, a few of his many children remained within the community; others did not. Seixas was in regular contact with Christian Hebraists throughout his life. He corresponded with Moses Stuart on personal and scholarly matters and he proofread the grammars published by Stuart and George Bush. Seixas himself authored grammars for Hebrew, Aramaic, Syriac and Arabic….An expanded second edition (119 pp.) was published in 1834 UA #590]; a third revised and corrected edition (83 pp.) was published in 1852 UA #1263]. Seixas's grammar was reviewed favorably in its time (Goldman, 'Joshua/James Seixas," 72), though Chomsky later criticized it (Chomsky [1958], 133-4).” For detailed analysis of Seixas' relationship with the founders of the Mormon church, see Rick Grunder's 2015 essay "A Teacher for the Temple: The Infectious Exuberance of Joshua Seixas" (www.rickgrunder.com/seixas.pdf). Interesting assortment of period ownership inscriptions including Jackson Coffing; A.J. Sem, NY City Nov 21st 1853; and Geo Wilson Lemert (?), From his sister Josephine, Antioch Apr. 24th 1869. ‎First Edition. Original board with paper label on front, as issued, 8vo, 54 pages ; 22 cm. In English with Hebrew. Singerman 564; Rosenbach 368;  Bruntjen 21148;  Goldman-Kinsberg 183. Goldman notes, “Joshua Seixas, the son of Gershom Mendes Seixas (the minister of New York's Shearith Israel congregation), was born in New York in 1802....He taught in Shearith Israel's Hebrew school in the mid-1820s and he established the congregation's first choir. This is presumably the very edition of his book that he would have used with his Mormon students there. "Seixas left Ohio in 1836 and he was living in Staten Island, NY, by 1838.....a few of his many children remained within the community; others did not....Seixas's grammar was reviewed favorably in its time (Goldman, 'Joshua/James Seixas," 72), though Chomsky later criticized it (Chomsky [1958], 133-4).”  In addition, the printer, Gould, was a relative of Joseph Smith, who is descendant of Zaccheus Gould by the marriage of Samuel Smith and Priscilla Gould. The Smiths came from Topsfield, near Andover, where Gould had his press. ‎1st edition. Beautiful original period half-leather over marbled boards with raised bands and gilt spine design. Title translates as, “The Jew, A Weekly.” German interspersed with Hebrew. Device on title. Headpieces, initials, tailpieces. Includes graphics of Jewish ceremonial art [for example, in Vol. II, between pp. 52-53; Vol. II: pp. (12), 368. Vol. III: pp.(16) ]. The editor of Der Jude, Gottfried Selig (1722-95), was a convert to Christianity who sought reconciliation between Christians and Jews, to which end, this periodical appeared containing much information about Jewish history, rites and customs. His assumption was that, equipped with deeper insight into Jewish life, a greater sense of understanding would arise within society as a whole. Selig’s goal in publishing Der Jude was to make peace between Christians and Jews, but the work earned him opposition from both sides, with Jews claiming that its true goal was to convert Jews to Christianity, and Christians claiming that it lacked historical veracity and presented a false neutrality. Der Jude was issued between 1768-1772 in nine volumes. Kirchner 2084. Furst III, 309. Diesch 773. Yiddish scholar Judah Joffe’s set with his photographic bookplate. Marbled endpapers. Slight internal binding error at rear of vol III, otherwise a beautiful dramatic period set in Very Good Condition. Price for all 74 issues, bound in 3 volumes (GER-60-5)‎

Sephiha, who retired in 1991, was instrumental in securing academic acceptance and public support for the “agonizing language” he spoke and taught. Besides his scientific and popular publications, from 1972 he launched several calls for revival of the language and in 1979 founded the “Association Vidas Largas for the Defense and Promotion of the Judeo-Spanish Language and Culture, ” which organizes educational work in Sephardi communities as well as the rescue of literary, musical, and architectural treasures. Judeo-Spanish has since been included among the recognized minority languages of France. In 2003, Sephiha inaugurated at the Auschwitz site a memorial in honor of the 160, 000 Judeo-Spanish victims of the Holocaust” (Wilke in EJ 2007) . Ex-library with usual markings. Sherira ben Hanina Gaon (c. 906–1006) , “gaon of Pumbedita from 968–1006. … Sherira was among the most prolific writers of responsa. One inquiry addressed to him by Jacob b. Nissim b. Shahin in the name of the community of Kairouan led to the writing in 987 of his famous epistle, Iggeret Rav Sherira Ga'on, a classic of Jewish historiography. Jacob sought information as to when and how the Mishnah, the Tosefta, the beraitot, and the Talmud had been compiled. He inquired 'whether the men of the Great Synagogue had really begun the writing of the Mishnah, and the Sages of each generation had written [more] parts of it until Rabbi [Judah] ha-Nasi came and compiled it. ' Sherira deals with the question in a scholarly manner, revealing himself a practical and accurate historian (with the possible reservation that his opinions on the exilarchs, descended from Bustanai , from whom he claimed descent, may be colored) . He discusses the activity of the savoraim in revising and compiling the Talmud, and continues the sequence of tradition to the geonic authorities. ”- 2008 EJ. R. ‎ISRAELI JUDAISM‎

‎Cloth, 8vo, 323 pages. 2.5 x 15.2 x 22.9 cm. This is an unusual and extremely timely collective effort. It appears at a moment in which Israelis not only must confront their Arab neighbors, but must deal with one another as Jews possessing radically different views on the present and future of the Jewish tradition. With this seventh volume of the series, the Israeli Sociological Society has turned its attention to religion, an area that for many years has been of high importance, but low profile in Israeli affairs and in the wider Middle Eastern context. Chapters and contributors include: "Jewish Civilization: Approaches to Problems of Israeli Society" by Shmuel N. Eisenstadt; "Life Tradition and Book Tradition in the Development of Ultraorthodox Judaism" by Menachem Friedman; "Religious Kibbutzim: Judaism and Modernization" by Aryei Fishman; "The Religion of Elderly Oriental Jewish Women" by Susan Sered; and "Hanukkah and the Myth of the Maccabees in Ideology and in Society" by Eliezer Don-Yehiya. The increasing presence of religious activism in contemporary Israel, side by side with subtle changes in the religion of Israeli Sephardim, makes the topic of religion essential for an understanding of Israeland much of the Middle East generally. Israeli Judaism is a significant work, and will be of interest to theologians, philosophers, sociologists, anthropologists, and political theorists. Ex-library, very good condition. (AC-3-5)‎

Solomon Naumovich Rabinovich (1859 –1916) , better known under his pen name Sholem Aleichem, was the leading Yiddish author and playwright of the late 19th and early 20th Century. “The musical Fiddler on the Roof, based on his stories about Tevye the Dairyman, was the first commercially successful English-language stage production about Jewish life in Eastern Europe. …. From 1880 to 1883 he served as crown rabbi in Lubny…. After witnessing the pogroms that swept through southern Russia in 1905, Sholem Aleichem left Kiev and resettled to New York City, where he arrived in 1906.…In July 1908, during a reading tour in Russia, Sholem Aleichem collapsed on a train going through Baranowicze. He was diagnosed with a relapse of acute hemorrhagic tuberculosis and spent two months convalescing in the town's hospital. He later described the incident as "meeting his majesty, the Angel of Death, face to face", and claimed it as the catalyst for writing his autobiography, Funem yarid [From the Fair]. He thus missed the first Conference for the Yiddish Language, held in 1908 in Czernovitz; his colleague and fellow Yiddish activist Nathan Birnbaum went in his place…. Sholem Aleichem moved to New York City again with his family in 1914. The family lived in the Lower East Side, Manhattan” where he died in 1916 (Wikipedia, 2017) . Title translates into English as, “The Tenets of Neugermanischen Judeophobia with Special Reference to W. [Wilhelm] Marr’s Writings Historically and Factually Lit by Ludwig Stern. ” Stern was a German Talmudic scholar, teacher, author, and contemporary of Wilhelm Marr, who published this work in the same year as Marr’s infamous pamphlet, Der Weg zum Siege des Germanenthums über das Judenthum (The Way to Victory of Germanicism over Judaism, 1879) . Wilhelm Marr (1819-1904) , a radical agitator, had been on the left wing in the 48 revolutions; he later popularized the term anti-semitism. In ‘Der Weg zum Siege des Germanenthums über das Judenthum, ’ he introduced the idea that Germans and Jews were locked in a longstanding conflict, the origins of which he attributed to race, argued that Jewish emancipation resulting from German liberalism had allowed the Jews to control German finance and industry, and called for the expulsion of Jews from Germany. Marr later renounced anti-semitism at the end of his life, and declared himself as originally a 'philo-semite', undoubtedly under the impact of the debates in the SPD.
