‎SAMMLUNG JÜDISCHER KUNSTGEGENSTÄNDE DER SYNAGOGEN-GEMEINDE ZU DANZIG‎

‎1st Edition. 8vo. 32 pages ; 25 cm. With 12 additional plates of photographs. Title translates into English as, “The Collection of Jewish Art Objects of the Synagogue Community in Danzig. ” An exhibition catalog with ritual and historic objects from the Great Synagogue in Danzig. “The Great Synagogue Danzig was the largest synagogue of the city, which was built in the years 1885-1887 at the former Reitbahnstrasse (today's street Boguslawskiego) . It was planned for 2000 church visitors and designed in a neo-Renaissance style . The inauguration took place on 15 September 1887 by the rabbi Cossmann Werner… In April 1939, the synagogue was destroyed at the instigation of the Danzig authorities.. After the anti-Jewish riots of Kristallnacht of 9/10 November 1938 in Germany, similar riots took place on 12/13 November in Danzig. The Great Synagogue was taken over and demolished by the local authorities in 1939. Most Jews had already left the city, and the Jewish Community of Danzig decided to organize its own emigration in early 1939.” (Wikipedia, 2017) This 1933 exhibition took place during the period at which Danzig was an semi-autonomous city-state known as “The Free City of Danzig. ” This historical period in Danzig’s history has been brought to life by Günter Grass’ Danzig Trilogy, including “The Tin Drum. ” “In 1933, the city's government was taken over by the local Nazi Party, which suppressed the democratic opposition. Due to anti-Semitic persecution and oppression, many Jews fled. After the German invasion of Poland in 1939, the Nazis abolished the Free City and incorporated the area into the newly formed Reichsgau of Danzig-West Prussia. The Nazis classified the Poles and Jews living in the city as subhumans, subjecting them to discrimination, forced labor, and extermination. Many were sent to death at Nazi concentration camps, including nearby Stutthof (now Sztutowo, Poland) . ” (Wikipedia, 2017) SUBJECT(S) : Jews -- Poland -- Gdansk -- Exhibitions. ‎(Xt) Syrkin, Nachman‎

‎IDISHER KONGRES IN AMERIKA‎

‎First edition. Original boards. 8vo. 536 pages : illustrations, portraits ; 27 cm. In Yiddish. Title translates to "Yiddish Congress in America. " Nachman Syrkin (18681924) was the first ideological leader of Socialist Zionism. Syrkin joined Hovevei Zion while a young man in Minsk. He was placed under arrest for several weeks, after which he went to London and then to Berlin (1888) , where he studied psychology and philosophy. In Berlin he was a founder of the Russian-Jewish Scientific Society, from whose ranks a number of Zionist leaders emerged. Syrkin participated in the First Zionist Congress in 1897, leading the few representatives of Socialist Zionism. In 1898, two years after the appearance of Herzl's "The Jewish State", he published an article in the Austrian Socialist monthly Deutsche Worte and enlarged it in the same year into a pamphlet "The Jewish Question and the Socialist Jewish State", in which he outlined for the first time the idea to which he adhered throughout his life: the realization of Zionism through cooperative mass settlement of the Jewish proletariat. In the press, as well as from the rostrum of the Zionist Congresses, Syrkin forcefully attacked the preponderance of "bourgeois and clerical" elements in the Zionist Organization, as well as Herzl's diplomatic overtures to "reactionary monarchs" (William II) and "tyrants" (Nicholas II) . His speeches often caused loud protests and even scandals in the Congress sessions" (EJ, 2007) . SUBJECTS: Jews -- United States. Jews. ‎THE STRANGER IN THE SYNAGOGUE, OR, THE RITES AND CEREMONIES OF THE JEWISH WORSHIP, DESCRIBED AND EXPLAINED 40911‎

‎1st edition. Original orange paper wrappers, 12mo, 52 pages. 16cm. Includes index. Singerman 1363. Simon Tuska (1835–1871) was a U.S. rabbi. Tuska was awarded one of the first scholarships to the University of Rochester, founded in 1850. Although he specialized in Greek and Latin, his chief interest was Judaism. While still a student, he wrote and published ‘The Stranger in the Synagogue’ to explain Jewish rites and ceremonies to both his Christian colleagues and the Jewish public. He was warmly praised by Isaac Mayer Wise, but his critique of talmudic law drew the censure of Isaac Leeser. Tuska wrote letters and articles for both The Israelite and The Occident, and Wise encouraged him to pursue the rabbinate. Upon graduation in 1856 Tuska attended courses at the Rochester Theological Seminary. He did not seek a pulpit because of his youth and the fact that most Reform congregations of the day required a German-speaking rabbi. However, as a result of Wise's constant urging, he decided in 1858 to go to the Breslau seminary to prepare himself for the rabbinate. In 1860 Tuska tried unsuccessfully to become English lecturer at Temple Emanuel in New York. He subsequently was also rejected by Congregation Berith Kodesh in his hometown, Rochester, because of his radical religious views. Shortly thereafter he was elected to the Reform pulpit in Memphis, Tennessee, where he served until his death. Tuska's importance lay in the pattern he set for the training of U.S. rabbis – English-speaking, with university degree plus theological training (A.J. Karp, in: AJHSQ, 50:2 (1960), 79–97). SUBJECT(S): Judaism -- Customs and practices. Fasts and feasts Prayer. OCLC: 999866575. Blind stamp to to original paper cover and title page. ‎JOSEPH ALBO ON FREE CHOICE: EXEGETICAL INNOVATION IN MEDIEVAL JEWISH PHILOSOPHY‎

‎1st edition, original cloth with dust jacket, 8vo. 218 pages. 25 cm. "Joseph Albo on Free Choice discovers unsuspected philosophical originality in the interpretations of biblical narrative found in Joseph Albo's Book of Principles, one of the most popular Hebrew works in the corpus of medieval Jewish philosophy. Several of Albo's exegetical analyses focus on free choice, which emerges as a conceptual scheme throughout his work. An exploration of Albo's innovative homiletical interpretations of the binding of Isaac, the hardening of Pharaoh's heart, the Book of Job, and God's choice of Israel, reveals his view of free choice which was significant during a historical period of religious coercion. Albo's sole surviving responsum dealing with the case of the qatlanit further demonstrates his philosophical position. In this new book, Shira Weiss shows that in the medieval era in which Albo lived, free choice was an important topic, subject to vehement debate that has continued to be contested in modern philosophy" (abstract) SUBJECT(S) : Philosophy, Medieval. ‎TEFILOT BENE YESHURUN LE-YOM HAKIPURIM. THE DIVINE SERVICE OF AMERICAN ISRAELITES FOR THE DAY OF ATONEMENT, KEFI MINHAG AMERICA‎

‎1st edition. Later cloth, 12mo, 307, 55. In English, Hebrew and German. Singerman 1949, Goldman 53. The original two volumes of the Minhag America prayer book had both been published in 1857, one with Hebrew-English text (Prayer Book for Public and Private Worship) and the other with Hebrew-German text (Gebet-Buch fur den offentlichen Gottesdienst und die Privat-Andacht). In the 1860s, he took the project up again, issuing a three volume series of his “Minhag Amerika”–the American Tradition–with the present volume for Yom Kipur (The Day of Atonement), as well as a volume for Rosh HaShanah (the Jewish New year) and a combined Jewish Hymnal and Psalter, all shaped by his view of Reform Judaism in America. This volume thus represents one of the first Reform prayer books for the High Holidays in the United States. Some of the prayers are translated both into English and German. Wise, was a pioneer of Reform Judaism in America and became its acknowledged leader and its institutional architect, organizing the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (1873) , the Hebrew Union College (1875) , and the Central Conference of American Rabbis (1889) . The reforms that he instituted sought to change or adapt Judaism to 19th century America. He was also an organizer and mover in the establishment of the Central Conference of American Rabbis, in 1889. Elected its president, he served until he died. Wise believed in uniting American Jewry and hoped to publish a new American reform prayer book titled "Minhag America. ” The Machzor presented here is part of this project. (See: Goldman 44). ‎HISTORY OF THE ISRAELITISH NATION: FROM ABRAHAM TO THE PRESENT TIME ... VOL. I (COMPLETE NO MORE PUBLISHED)‎

‎1st Edition. Singerman 1864. Original Boards. 8vo. [xxiv], 560 pages; 23 cm. In English. This is the first published work by Isaac Mayer Wise. Wise was an American Reform rabbi, editor, and author, and a founder of Hebrew Union College. "During his lifetime Isaac M. Wise was regarded as the most prominent Jew of his time in the United States. His genius for organization was of a very high order; and he was masterful, rich in resources, and possessed of an inflexible will. More than of any of his contemporaries, it may be said of him that he left the impress of his personality upon the development of Judaism in the United States. " (JE) The eight years of Isaac M. Wise's ministration in Albany may be considered the crucial period of his existence. It was during this time that he conceived the projects which he carried to such successful issue later. But it was also his storm and stress period. In October, 1846, 8 years prior to publication of this work, Wise was appointed rabbi of Congregation Beth-El of Albany, New York. He soon began making reforms. Congregation Beth-El was the first American synagogue to: - Count women in forming a minyan or religious quorum. - Allow men and women to sit together, in family pews. (Another source says this first happened in 1851, at Anshe Emeth.)- Eliminate Bar Mitzvah, which in Wise's view was meaningless because at that age a boy cannot understand Judaism, and replace it with a later and more informed confirmation, open to girls as well. and - Have a mixed-sex choir. Also , Wise had famously remarked in reply to a question, when he was in Charleston, South Carolina applying for another Rabbinate position (at Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim) and lecturing on "The Poetry of the Hebrew Bible," that he did not believe in the coming of the Messiah or the resurrection of the dead; a letter from the Charleston congregation documenting these statements was published in a newspaper. The result of this was that in 1850 the trustees of the synagogue dismissed him, which Wise did not accept. At the following day's service, the first day of Rosh Hashanah, at the moment when the Torah scroll was being removed from the ark, an altercation broke out between opponents and defenders of Wise. The fracas was so pronounced that the Sheriff was called; the Sheriff cleared the synagogue, locked the doors, and took the keys. This was the end of Wise's position at Temple Beth-El.Supporters of Wise formed a new congregation, Anshe Emeth. Wise remained with this congregation until 1854, the year of publication of this work. In January 1852, Wise was Chaplain of the Legislature of the State of New York, a position supporters, including then-New York Senator William H. Seward, helped him get since Anshe Emeth was unable to pay a full salary. During this time Wise worked on his History of the Israelitish Nation, which he stated was based on "such facts as are able to stand the test of criticism", eliminating miracles, dogmas, and doctrines, and as a general principle distinguishing religion from history. Unable to find a publisher, he printed it at his own expense, with help from friends. As he put it, "it fell into the orthodox camps like a veritable bomb".Wise published a second volume of his History in 1867 under the title, "History of the Hebrews' second commonwealth : with special reference to its literature, culture, and the origin of rabbinism and Christianity" (Cincinnati, Ohio : Bloch, 1867). ‎BEN HECHT'S "PERFIDY": AN ANALYSIS OF HIS REWRITING OF HISTORY‎

‎First edition. Original paper wrappers, 16 pages ; 23 cm. Named Persons: Kasztner, Rezso Rudolf, 1906-1957. Grunwald, Malkiel. Hecht, Ben, 1893-1964. Perfidy. Grünwald, Malkiel. Grinvald, Malkiel. Kasztner, Rezso Rudolf, 1906-1957. A refutation of Ben Hecht's account, in his book Perfidy, of the trial of M. Grunwald before an Israeli court on the charge of criminal libel of R. Kastner. “Once in a very great while you read a book that forever changes your perspective. For me that book was Ben Hecht's Perfidy, which I devoured sometime in 1974 or '75 after it appeared on a recommended reading list issued by the Jewish Defense League, of which I was a member. Perfidy means treachery; the deliberate breaking of faith. In 1961, when Hecht published his aptly titled expose about events in the Holocaust, Hitler's war against the Jews was a repressed memory in the American Jewish consciousness. Perfidy sold well enough to go into a second edition, though by the time I procured a copy it had gone out of print and was rumored to have been blacklisted. PERFIDY IS a devastating account of how, toward the end of the Shoah, the Jews of Hungary were betrayed by Rudolf Kastner, deputy head of the Relief and Rescue Committee, an ideological affiliate of Mapai (precursor of today's Labor Party) . Hecht tells how after the Nazi invasion of Hungary in March 1944, Kastner brazenly collaborated with Dieter Wisliceny, a top aide to Gestapo Jewish Section chief Adolf Eichmann, to save the lives of cronies and family. Eichmann allowed Kastner to organize a rescue train which brought 1, 685 of these people to safety in Switzerland, in return - so goes Hecht's damning accusation - for keeping the rest of Hungarian Jewry in the dark about the fate that awaited them. He thus facilitated the Nazi genocide. Hecht charges that Kastner, despite his connections with the SS, didn't lift a finger to help Hanna Szenes, the Palestinian Jewish heroine who had parachuted into Nazi-occupied Hungary on a rescue mission. Perhaps most damning of all: After the war, Kastner testified on behalf of SS officer Kurt Becher (a Nazi he'd been dealing with) , though Becher had taken part in the genocide of Hungarian Jewry. With all this under his belt, Hecht wrote, Kastner eventually wound up in Israel vying for a spot on the Mapai Party's Knesset list. “ (Jager, 2007) . Ben Hecht (1894 – 1964) “was an American screenwriter, director, producer, playwright, journalist, and novelist… He became an active Zionist shortly before the Holocaust began in Germany, and wrote articles and plays about the plight of European Jews” (Wikipedia 2018) . OCLC lists 13 copies worldwide. OCLC: 16637712. Good Condition, yellowing along edges and minor staining on front cover. (Zion-16-7)‎

‎THE MEANING OF FREEDOM‎

‎1st Edition. Original Paper Wrappers. 8vo. 8 pages ; 23 cm. In English. From the 3rd Annual Sol Feinstone Memorial Lecture series at West Point. This lecture given by Pulitzer Prize winning novelist and writer Herman Wouk. Wouk served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater of WWII. He addresses the west point graduates about The Meaning of Freedom, concluding, “In the last five years, working on ‘The Winds of War…’ I’ve spoken three times: to the Naval Academy, to the Naval War caollege, and now to the United States Military Academy. It isn’t because I’m a militarist. I’m not intrigued… by the romance of war. Let me make this plain to you. In my view war is a massive criminal absurdity… I believe, heart and soul, that in days to come it will fade from the minds of men and nations as a possible way to behave. That is what I’m trying to say in my books. ” OCLC lists only one copy worldwide (Westpoint) . This cannot have been well-received at West Point, and certainly would not have been a speech it would have wanted to promote or make readily available outside the academy. Ex-library with Jewish institutional stamp and usual markings. Some markings on cover and waterdamage to the top of the paper wrappers and first page. Text is not effected and is bright and clean. Overall in about very good condition. (SPEC-42-20A)‎
