[ Bordeaux] Tsoref, Yitshak; Ya'akov Tsoref. Introduction by Alfred Moldovan
HAGADAT BORDO: FAKSIMILEH (573) = LA HAGGADA DE BORDEAUX: FACSIMILE (1813) .
Hardback. 4to. [144] pages. 33 cm. First Fascimile edition. Text in Hebrew and French; introduction also in English. Cover title: Hagadah = Agadda. Seder Hagadah shel Pesah. Transcribed by Yitshak Tsoref; illustrated by Ya? Akov Tsoref. Facsimile of a manuscript from the Moldovan family collection. The Bordeaux Haggadah is the first illuminated 19th century manuscript haggadah made in France. This Haggadah Facsimile includes one large map of the Holy Land and a large map of the Holy City of Jerusalem, printed in 1813. This Haggadah reflects the affluence and position of the Sephardic Jews of France in the nineteenth century. A Sephardic community was established in Bordeaux soon after the expulsion from Spain and Portugal at the end of the 15th century, where they became well-established and prosperous. The artistic elements and the composition of this Haggadah are in the tradition of the Neo-classical Empire style of the Napoleonic Era. Besides the standard Sephardi Passover liturgy, there are instructions in Ladino, as well as some translations of the Hebrew into Aramaic. The text is divided evenly between Hebrew and French. - Yale Exhibits. Subjects: Haggadot - Texts. Seder - Liturgy - Texts. Judaism - Liturgy - Texts. Manuscripts, Hebrew - Facsimiles. Manuscripts, French - Facsimiles. Jewish illumination of books and manuscripts. Bordeaux Haggadah. OCLC lists 20 copies. Near fine condition. (HAG-13-29)

MIT DER TSVEYTER ALIYEH
Cloth, 8vo. , 260 pages. In Yiddish. With the Second Aliyah (Memoirs) . Added title in Spanish: Con La Segunda Alia (Memorias) . Ben-Zvi (Shimshelevich) , Izhak (18841963) , was a Labor leader in the Yishuv, historian, Israeli politician, second president of the State of Israel; member of the First and Second Knessets. Ben-Zvi was born in Poltava, Ukraine, the eldest son of ? Evi Shimshelevich. He visited Ere? Israel for the first time in 1904 for a period of two months. He entered the University of Kiev in 1905, but studies were interrupted due to a general strike....Ben-Zvi settled in Ere? Israel at the beginning of 1907. In the same year he was a Po'alei Zion delegate from Ere? Israel to the Eighth Zionist Congress held in The Hague. He participated in the founding of the Bar Giora organization in Jaffa in 1907, and in 1909 of Ha-Shomer , along with Rahel Yanait (Ben-Zvi) , who had settled in Ere? Israel in 1908, and was to become his wife in 1918...In 1910 Ben-Zvi, together with Ra? El Yanait, Ze'ev Ashur, and others, founded the first Hebrew socialist periodical in Ere? Israel, A? Dut ("Unity") . Upon the outbreak of World War I, Ben-Zvi interrupted his studies at the University of Constantinople and returned to Ere? Israel. During the persecution of Jews by Jamal Pasha, the Ottoman governor, A? Dut was closed down, and Ben-Zvi, together with David Ben-Gurion, was imprisoned. They were both deported, and eventually made their way to New York. There they founded in 1915 the He-? His research on the history of the people of Israel was a lifelong endeavor. The scholarly works that he published were devoted mainly to research on communities and sects (such as the Samaritans, Karaites, Shabbateans, Jewish communities in Asia and Africa, the mountain Jews, and others) and to the geography of Ere? Israel, its ancient populations, its antiquities, and its traditions. He was also a prolific journalist, publishing articles under his own name as well as under various pseudonyms (Shazar, EJ, 2007) . OCLC lists 14 copies worldwide. Very good condition. (YID-17-2)

[WW 1 / NAVAL FORCES] Original gelatin silver photo of H.M.S. Irresistible in 1914.
Very Good English Original gelatin silver photograph mounted on a paper. 25x16 cm. Descriptive text on the bottom margin. "RP", a real photograph. Scarce photographic image of H.M.S. Irresistible in 1914 (during the First World War), the fourth British Royal Navy ship launched in December 1898, sunk in the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915 at the Dardanelles. HMS Irresistible was a Formidable-class pre-dreadnought battleship. The ship was laid down in April 1898, was launched in December that year, and was completed in October 1901. Commissioned in 1902, she initially served with the Mediterranean Fleet until April 1908, when she was transferred to the Channel Fleet. Now outclassed with the emergence of the dreadnought class of ships, she entered service with the Home Fleet in 1911 following a refit. In 1912, she was assigned to the 5th Battle Squadron. Following the outbreak of World War I, Irresistible, along with the squadron, was assigned to the Channel Fleet. After operations with the Dover Patrol, during which she bombarded German forces in northern France, she was assigned to the Dardanelles Campaign in February 1915. She took part in numerous unsuccessful attacks on the Ottoman forts guarding the Dardanelles in February and March. These operations included several raids by landing parties to destroy Ottoman coastal artillery batteries. On 18 March, she struck a naval mine that caused extensive flooding and disabled her engines. Without power, she began to drift into the range of Turkish guns, which laid down a withering fire. Attempts to tow her failed, so her surviving crew was evacuated and Irresistible was abandoned and eventually sank. Her crew suffered around 150 killed in the sinking. (Wikipedia).

[MIDDLE EAST / ARMISTICE & OCCUPATION PERIOD OF ISTANBUL] Original two gelatin silver photographs of Italian soldiers in Istanbul during the occupation of Constantinople.
Very Good Turkish Original two gelatin silver photos. 9x14,5 cm and 8x13 cm. Captioned in Italian. Restored tears on one photo, otherwise good prints. Rare two photographic images of Italian colonels with their uniforms, medals and women in Istanbul during the occupation of Constantinople (or Armistice Period, 1918-1923) in 1922. 1. Revista statuto, 1922, Constantinopoli. [i.e. Statute review, 1922, Constantinople]. 2. Corne d'Oro, 7 Mars 1922. [i.e. The Golden Horn, March 7, 1922]: Commissione di guchiesta nelle fabbriche. Nazionale ottomane. [i.e. Commission of inquiry in national Ottoman factories], captioned names: "Col. Abraham, Col. Tenperlas, Col. Twidale(?), (?)". The occupation of Constantinople (November 13, 1918 - October 4, 1923) the capital of the Ottoman Empire, by British, French, Italian, and Greek forces, took place in accordance with the Armistice of Mudros, which ended Ottoman participation in the First World War. The first French troops entered the city on November 12, 1918, followed by British troops the next day. The Italian troops landed in Galata on February 7, 1919. Allied troops occupied zones based on the sections of Constantinople (now Istanbul) and set up an Allied military administration early in December 1918. The occupation had two stages: the initial phase in accordance with the Armistice gave way in 1920 to a more formal arrangement under the Treaty of Sèvres. Ultimately, the Treaty of Lausanne, signed on 24 July 1923, led to the end of the occupation. The last troops of the Allies departed from the city on 4 October 1923, and the first troops of the Ankara government, commanded by Sükrü Naili Pasha (3rd Corps), entered the city with a ceremony on 6 October 1923, which has been marked as the Liberation Day of Constantinople and is commemorated every year on its anniversary. 1918 saw the first time the city had changed hands since the Fall of Constantinople in 1453. Along with the Occupation of Smyrna, it spurred the establishment of the Turkish National Movement, leading to the Turkish War of Independence. (Wikipedia).

[Antopol] Ayalon, Benzion H.
ANTOPOL (ANTIPOLYE) : SEFER-YIZKOR. ANTOPOL (ANTEPOLIE) YIZKOR BOOK
1st edition, original cloth with dust jacket, 4to, 11 pages + 754, 170 columns. Illustrations throughout. In Hebrew, with an English section. This is the story of a vanished world, the shtetel of Antopol. The material for this presentation was gathered painstakingly over a long period of time by a relatively small group of dedicated people who wished to preserve its memory and heritage for the descendants of its martyred. More than a history, this story is very personal because our parents, grandparents and great-great grandparents going back many generations came from this community. This is also a place whose many sons and daughters in years past left to seek a new and free life. Many achieved success and prominence all over the world - the United States, South Africa, Argentina, and other areas of the globe. We are the fortunate descendants of these hardy forebears and pioneers. It is hard to imagine that only a few decades ago there existed a vibrant, living community called Antopol, with its men, women and children; its market place, stores, schools. Beth medroshim (Houses of Prayer) , orphanages, Gmilas Hasodim (free loan society for the needy) , newspaper stands - all so familiar and so dear to memory. This little town was typical of hundreds of similar smaller and larger communities. And, like Atlantis, or some past people recounted in a saga, it suddenly vanished in the most bloody massacre in all of history. But this presentation is for the living - to convey to us, the she'erit or last remnant of descendants, something of the heritage, spirit and, record of the life of this community which many of us know only in an abstract and detached way. The task is too great, and our resources too limited to write the whole story. This little volume, condensed and translated into English, is both a record and a personal memorial to a profoundly meaningful and warmly nostalgic past. (foreword from the English version of this book) SUBJECT(S) : Jews -- Belarus -- Antopal. Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) . Ethnic relations. OCLC: 19155706. Dust jacket has some tearing and damp stains, cover corners are dented, some wear on bottom of spine, page edges slightly yellowed, internally very good. Good Condition overall. (YIZ-17-7A) xx
