‎Faksimileausgabe Handschrift Ms V 1102 aus der Leipziger Universitätsbibliothek. Dreisprachige Ausgabe in Deutsch, Englisch und Hebräisch. Mit zahlreichen zum Teil goldgehöhten Deckfarbenminiaturen, diese sowohl mehrzeilig im Text, als auch als Medaillons oder menschliche, botanische und zoologische Figuren im Blattrand, farbigen und goldgehöhten Zierseiten mit Architekturrahmung und farbigen und goldgehöhten Zierüberschriften unter anderem mit floralen Motiven und integrierten Miniaturen. Rot rubrizierter Text in schöner Quadratschrift. Der Textband wurde herausgegeben von Elias Katz. Die Handschrift des jüdischen Festgebetbuchs entstand etwa im 14. Jahrhundert in Südwestdeutschland und ist eine wichtige Quelle für die Kenntnis des liturgischen, kulturellen und gesellschaftlichen Lebens der dortigen Juden zu dieser Zeit. Die in großer Anzahl wiedergegebenen Gebete und Pijutim stellen einen äußerst relevanten Beitrag zur Geschichte des aschkenasischen Ritus im Rheinland dar, und die Entwicklung dieses Ritus wird dadurch deutlicher. Die kurzen Kanten der Kassette etwas angeplatzt bzw. eingerissen, Kassette innen etwas gebräunt und mit Einriss in der Kante zum integrierten Fach für den Textband. Hinteres fliegendes Blatt des Textbandes mit zwei Knickstellen. Ansonsten sehr gutes Exemplar. Original leather binding with gold-tooled cover illustration in colour and original half-cloth binding with painted decorative paper covering and paper title labels. In original cardboard case. Facsimile edition of manuscript V 1102 from the Leipzig University Library. Trilingual edition in German, English, and Hebrew. Featuring numerous miniatures with gold accents on the coloured decorations, appearing both multi-line in the text and as medallions or human, botanical, and zoological figures in the margins, as well as coloured and gold-heightened decorative pages with architectural framing and coloured and gold-heightened decorative headings, including floral motifs and integrated miniatures. The red rubricated text is rendered in an attractive square script. The text volume was edited by Elias Katz. The manuscript of the Jewish prayer book was created around the 14th century in Southwest Germany and serves as an important source for understanding the liturgical, cultural, and social life of the Jewish community in that region at the time. The numerous prayers and pijutim included provide a highly relevant contribution to the history of the Ashkenazi rite in the Rhineland, and the development of this rite is thereby made clearer. The short edges of the case are slightly chipped or torn, the interior of the case is somewhat darkened and features a tear at the edge leading to the integrated compartment for the text volume. The rear flyleaf of the text volume has two crease marks. Otherwise a fine copy.‎

Title translates to “Prayerbook for Rosh Hashana: According to the Sephardic Rite of Constantinople, the Mizrahi, Western, and Italian Rites. ” Livorno, or Leghorn, was a Jewish printing capital that published and sent many religious works to the East. “Prior to World War II, Livorno’s Jewish population numbered approximately 2, 235. It is estimated that 60 to 90 percent of Livorno was destroyed in World War II, since its port was subject to attack from both sides. Livorno’s famous synagogue was bombed by the Allies and partially destroyed during the war. During the Holocaust, at least 119 Jews were sent to Auschwitz and other death camps from Livorno; only 11 survived. Others were killed in the surrounding mountains, where the German army was very active. At the end of the war [when this was printed]…1, 000 Jews lived in Livorno” (JVL, 2018) . ‎1st Polish edition. Later boards, 8vo, 91 pages. Includes 12 illustrated plates. In Polish. Title translates to “Majdanek: Court Proceedings of the Special Criminal Court in Lublin. ” A recording of court Preceedings of the Polish-Soviet Special Criminal Court established in Lublin in August 1944, in order to investigate the Nazi crimes in the Majdanek extermination camp. This Polish edition was published with several photographic reproductions, showing the members of the commission, the Nazi officers of the camp, the findings, human remains in Majdanek. The Majdanek concentration camp was established on Heinrich Himmler's order and operated from October 1, 1941 until it was liberated by the Soviet Army on July 22, 1944. It is known to be the best preserved Nazi concentration camp of the Holocaust, as the Germans did not have enough time to destroy the evidences of their crimes. The Commission for investigating the German crimes was established in August 1944 and soon they published this booklet in several languages. Despite of the importance of this statement it must be mentioned that the Commission made many erroneous assumptions regarding the duration of the camp or number of people killed at Majdanek, probably because they were motivated rather by political and propaganda agenda than by a search for historical facts. The total number of the victims is still controversial, in this report 1.5 million victims of different nationalities were counted, however according to the latest researches there were 79, 000 victims, 59, 000 of whom were Jews. Title translates to “Tractate Taanit from the Babylonian Talmud with all Commentaries. ” Vaad Hatzalah was an organization to rescue Jews in Europe from the Holocaust. After World War II, the Vaad played an active role in the spiritual rehabilitation of the survivors, continuing its operations until the early 1950s. From its establishment in 1939 until the end of 1945, the Vaad spent more than three million dollars on relief and rescue activities. While its insistence on according rescue efforts top priority and circumventing bureaucratic and legal obstacles has been favorably acknowledged by historians, its particularism and insistence on priority for Torah learning at the possible expense of rescue activities continue to be a source of debate and polemic in the Jewish community (JVL, 2018) . This is the program for memorial service of this leading Reform Rabbi who had already fought in 2 different armies before landing in the American South. Adolph Moses (1840-1902), "attended both the University of Breslau and Zechariah Frankel 's Rabbinical Seminary. Idealistic and devoted to his studies, Moses was especially interested in history, philosophy, and philology and like many young Jews of the time was strongly influenced by Western civilization. In 1859, carrying only a walking stick, he hiked to Italy where he fought under Garibaldi, attaining the rank of corporal...In 1863, Moses joined the Polish insurrection. Captured by the Russians, he later wrote a novel, Luser Segermacher, about his prison experiences. After his release, Moses went to Frankfurt on Main to study under Abraham Geiger , a leading Reform scholar, and later spent two years at the University of Vienna, where he was close to Professor Adolph Jellinek.... [in 1870] he accepted a call to a pulpit in Montgomery, Alabama, and soon moved on to another in Mobile, where he served 1871-1881. He devoted himself to learning to deliver sermons in good English, rather than the German language prevalent in the American synagogues at the time, and he developed a life-long fascination with Shakespeare, even giving lectures on the Bard. Moses leaned toward radical Reform, deprecating what he would term "physiological Judaism, " by which he meant its ritual and nationalistic aspects. He preferred instead to see Judaism as a world monotheistic doctrine of truth and morality. In 1885, he was the first to rise to advocate acceptance of the Platform at the famous meeting of Reform rabbis at Pittsburgh. He joined a group of rabbis in 1890 in rejecting the halakhic requirement of circumcision for male proselytes, although he criticized conversions for people who simply wanted to marry Jews. He opposed the budding Zionist movement, and like many Reform rabbis of that era moved his temple's main weekly service to Sundays, starting in 1892. He published many articles on Judaism, folklore, and anthropology and served as editor of Zeitgeist, a Jewish journal. A collection of his essays, along with a brief biography, was published in 1903 by Hyman G. Enelow. He graduated from the medical school of the University of Louisville in 1893 and was particularly interested in working with the blind. From 1881, he served as rabbi of Temple Adath Israel in Louisville, Kentucky, where he remained until his death (Schwartz in EJ, 2007) . No copies listed in OCLC. Outer black paper mourning frame wrappers, covering the inner white text and photograpic covers (with hole allowing photo to show through), are detached with edgewear but present. Otherwise Good Condition. Important and Exceedingly rare, perhaps a unique surviving copy. (AMR-57-2)‎
