. Known for her translations of Greek poetry, such as, Modern Greek Poetry (1949)
She also wrote two plays, A Season in Hell, which concerned the lives of the French poets Rimbaud and Verlaine, was successfully produced for the stage (1950) and Our Kind of People (1991) , an autobiographical production concerning a family of Jewish-Greek immigrants. Dalvens especial [sic] interest was in the history of the Jews in Greece, particularly the northern Ioannina community, who traced their ancestry to the ancient Palestinians (c300 BC) and had retianed their own customs and religious liturgy. She edited the academic journal the Sephardic Scholar and served as president of the American Society of Sephardic Studies (abitofhistory, 2018) . The present work is a comprehensive collection of all the most important Greek poets from 1751 to the 1940s. Mark Van Doren calls these English translations "natural and alive. Drama critic, theatre manager, playwright, and adapter, he became the first recognized stage director in America. He exercised a fierce and tyrannical control over all aspects of his productions. His rules of conduct for actors and actresses imposed heavy fines for late appearances and forgotten lines and earned him the title the autocrat of the stage
His play Leah the Forsaken, adapted from The Deborah (by) Hermann Salomon Mosenthal, was a star vehicle for Margaret Mather. (Wikipedia, 2016) This is the last edition of Leah, the Forsaken published during Dalys lifetime. OCLC lists 23 copies worldwide. Ex-library with usual markings and perforated stamp on title page. Avraham Firkowicz was a Turkic-speaking Karaite Jew from what is now Western Ukraine, who spent much of his life in extensive travels, during which he obsesively looked for ancient Jewish manuscripts. The academic world owes to this picturesque man three most important collections of Jewish manuscripts ever collected by a single man. During his short stay in Istanbul in the Tanzimat Period produced there several important Karaite books in Turkish, and his activities in the Ottoman capital paved, in many senses, the way for far-going transformation of Karaite life there and in Russia, which ultimately helped rise of Turkic nationalism.
