Dearborn Independent, The [Henry Ford, jr.]
JEWISH ACTIVITIES IN THE UNITED STATES; VOLUME II OF THE INTERNATIONAL JEW THE WORLD'S FOREMOST PROBLEM
12mo; 1st edition. Original paper wrappers, 12mo, 255 pages. 20 cm. Singerman 0118: This set is "The most well-known American contribution to the literature of anti-Semitism." Henry Ford, a noted anti-semite, had a close association with Dearborn, MI. Ford did not write the articles. He expressed his opinions verbally to his executive secretary, Ernest Liebold, and to William J. Cameron. Cameron had the main responsibility for expanding these opinions into article form. Liebold was responsible for collecting more material to support the articles. The Dearborn Independent, also known as The Ford International Weekly, was a weekly newspaper established in 1901, and published by Henry Ford from 1919 through 1927. The paper reached a circulation of 900,000 by 1925, second only to the New York Daily News, largely due to a quota system for promotion imposed on Ford dealers. Lawsuits regarding antisemitic material published in the paper caused Ford to close it, and the last issue was published in December 1927. The publication's title was derived from the Detroit suburb of Dearborn, Michigan. Derived largely from information found posted on line: Convinced that "bankers" and "the Jews" were responsible for a whole range of things he didn't like, from the world war to short skirts to jazz music, Henry Ford used his newspaper, the Dearborn Independent, to carry on an active anti-Semitic campaign. Between 1920 and 1922 a series of articles denounced all things Jewish. While officially apologizing for the articles in 1927, Ford's anti-Jewish sentiments ran deep. In January 1919, Henry Ford began publication of the Dearborn Independent, a small community weekly he had purchased the previous year. Carrying the subtitle, The Chronicler of the Neglected Truth, the paper primarily served as a forum for Henry Ford's views. Each issue of the Independent carried "Mr. Ford's Own Page," an editorial expressing his opinions, written by William J. Cameron. The Ford Motor Company pressured car dealers to buy multiple subscriptions and hand out copies to customers. The newspaper was popular, and circulation reached 900,000 in 1926. The Dearborn Independent would, most likely, have remained a sidebar in Ford's biography were it not for a controversial series that began on May 22, 1920 and lasted for several years. Appearing on the front page every week, "The International Jew: The World's Problem" examined a purported conspiracy launched by Jewish groups to achieve world domination. The basis for the articles was a notorious forgery, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, an anti-Semitic hoax, first published in Russia in 1903. Many have accused Ford's personal secretary, Ernest Liebold, of being the source of the campaign, and Liebold's anti-Semitic views are well documented. William Cameron, editor of the Independent, was an enthusiastic supporter of the publication of the anti-Semitic diatribes. However, Ford's own attitudes towards Jews were the major reason for the publication of "The International Jew." His anti-Semitic beliefs formed along several strands from his upbringing, attitudes, and personal beliefs. A common stereotype at the time led some people to assume that Jews controlled the international banking system; that belief may have fed his anti-Jewish feelings. The publication of "The International Jew" caused an uproar. In some quarters, such as anti-immigrant and nativist groups, the series confirmed their own beliefs. Others were appalled by the series, published demands for a retraction, removed the paper from public libraries, and promoted a boycott of Ford automobiles. Some Ford dealers refused to carry the paper. Responding to this pressure, Ford halted publication of the anti-Jewish series in January 1922, only to start it up again less than a year later. Some wear at spine, about Very Good- condition. (HOLO2-63-21A)

ME'IR ZULTSBERGER BE-FILADELFYA = OR MAYER: CATALOGUE OF THE OLD HEBREW MANUSCRIPTS AND PRINTED BOOKS OF THE LIBRARY OF HON. M. SULZBERGER OF PHILADELPHIA, PA
Original wraps. 8vo. 100 pages. 23 cm. First edition. Title in Hebrew and English, Hebrew text. This bibliography [of Mayer Sulzbergers library of 28 mss. And about 400 volumes of rare books] is the first in the Hebrew language to be printed in this land. (p.6) . Deinard compiled it in eight days (KA) . Among the entries are thirty-three American imprints. Deinard bemoaned the fact that Jews cared little for their own literary heritage; rather than establish Jewish libraries, they sold all their books and manuscripts to gentile institutions. He felt that conditions in America were auspicious for the establishment of Jewish libraries, but with the exception of a handful of individuals, among them Sulzberger, wealthy Jews were not interested (pp. 5-6) . Sulzberger lated donated his own private library, amassed by Deinard, to JTSA and it provided the foundation of what would become the most important Judaica library in the western hemisphere. It was Deinards first major breakthrough in setting up a Hebrew Judaica collection (Wilk, 122) . (Goldman, Hebrew Printing in America, entry # 255) . Singerman 5095. Subjects: Hebrew imprints - Catalogs. Manuscripts, Hebrew - Catalogs. Sulzberger, Mayer, 1843- - Library - Catalogs. Original wraps/boards absent. Title page light wear to margin, institutional stamp on verso, otherwise clean and fresh. Good + condition. (AMR-39-51) xx

ARUKHAT BAT-AMI: HA-HAKHANOT LE-KONGRES HA-RABANIM BI-DEVAR YISUD HA-SANHEDRIN BE-TSIYON UVE-SOFO .. EL HAAM BE-TSIYON
1st edition. Original wrappers. 8vo. 100 pages, 24 cm. In Hebrew. Title translates The Healing of the Daughter of My People: Preparations for the Congress of Rabbis on the Topic of Establishing the Sanhedrin. Ephraim Deinard (1846-1930) was one of the greatest Hebrew "bookmen" of all time. He was a prolific bookseller, bibliographer, publicist, polemicist, historian, memoirist, author, editor, and publisher. The Sanhedrin is traditionally viewed as the last institution which commanded universal authority among the Jewish people in the long chain of tradition from Moses until the present day. Since its dissolution in 358 CE, there has been no universally recognized authority within Jewish law (Halakha).Maimonides (11351204) was one of the greatest scholars on Judaism of the Middle Ages, and is arguably one of the most widely known scholars among the Jewish people. Influenced by the rationalist school of thought and generally showing a preference for a natural (as opposed to miraculous) redemption for the Jewish people, Maimonides proposed a rationalist solution for achieving the goal of re-establishing the highest court in Jewish tradition and reinvesting it with the same authority it had in former years. There have been several attempts to implement Maimonides' recommendations, the latest being in modern times (Wikipedia). SUBJECTS: Sanhedrin -- Restoration. OCLC lists 26 copies worldwide (OCLC: 19145988). Missing front wrapper (probably identical to title page, which is present). Spine rebacked. Edgewear to title page. All contents very good, Good Condition Overall. (ZION2-1-30-+-'e)

However, only seven of the fifteen articles are signed by him. Other contributors included Julius [Joel] Aronson, A. B. Dobsewitch, Judah David Eisenstein, Max Nordau, Moses Hacohen Reicherson, Abraham Hayyim Rosenberg and Rabbi Moses Weinberger. Subscriptions cost fifty cents. The printer later reported, "I received many subscriptions. Only a few paid the fifty cents in advance, the majority promised to pay once they received the book. After they received it they again promised [to pay], but their promise will forever remain unfulfilled. Ephraim Deinard, (18461930) , was a leading bibliographer and Hebrew author. He wandered in his youth, collecting ancient manuscripts and books in many countries, and then established a bookshop in Odessa. In 1897 he tried unsuccessfully to found an agricultural settlement in Nevada (U. S. ) . An active Zionist, he settled in Palestine in 1913 where he investigated the possibilities of Jewish settlement. After being expelled by the Turks in 1916 he returned to the United States and continued his bibliographical work. His two most noteworthy bibliographical works are Or Mayer: Catalogue of the Old Hebrew Manuscripts and Printed Books of the Library of the Hon. Mayer Sulzberger of Philadelphia (1896) and Koheleth America (1926) , a listing of Hebrew books published in America from 1735 to 1926. The first part of the latter work contains essays on the state of Hebrew literature in America, which are written in his unadorned, but typically acerbic, style. He laid the foundations of the Hebrew book and manuscript collections of the Library of Congress with the financial aid of Jacob Schiff. A violent polemicist on many controversial subjects, he attacked Reform Judaism, Hasidism, Christianity, and Karaism. Deinard was a prolific Hebrew writer, producing more than 50 books and pamphlets often signed with his pseudonym, Adir (Wikipedia, 2018; Goldman 2006) . SUBJECTS: Hebrew literature -- United States. Jewish literature -- United States. OCLC lists 12 copies worldwide (OCLC: 24132716) . Good+ condition. (ZION2-1-2-BR)
