Terre humaine)‎ ‎Le ghetto de Varsovie, 350.000 Juifs ; juillet 1942. Des rumeurs insistantes font état de la déportation imminente des Juifs. C'est à ce moment précis que le jeune archiviste de la communauté, Hillel Seldman, décide de consigner dans un journal le récit de l'horreur quotidienne pour le transmettre à la postérité. Il poursuivra cette chronique de l'angoisse jusqu'à son arrestation en janvier 1943, sauvé par un extraordinaire passeport paraguayen. Le "Journal du ghetto", rédigé en hébreu, a paru en 1946, suivi d'une traduction yiddish en 1947. N'ayant jamais fait l'objet d'une édition dans une langue à diffusion internationale, ce texte est resté méconnu alors qu'il s'agit d'un document humain bouleversant qui nous restitue, à travers le vécu d'un homme profondément religieux, la résistance obstinée et multiforme des Juifs de Varsovie à l'entreprise génocidaire nazie, infamante dans l'histoire de l'Allemagne. Préfacé, traduit de l'hébreu et du yiddish et annoté par Nathan Weinstock, le "Journal du ghetto" de Seidman est accompagné d'un dossier documentaire et critique composé par Nathan Weinstock et Georges Bensoussan, avec la collaboration de Micheline Weinstock, qui fait de ce livre un document unique. Meyer, followed by a photostatic reproduction of the 1789 edition of the sermon given by Gershom Mendes Seixas, original title: A religious discourse delivered in the synagogue in this city, on Thursday the 26th November, 1789. Agreeable to the proclamation of the president of the United States of America, to be observed as a day of public thanksgiving and prayer. Printed by Archibald M'Lean, at Franklin's Head no. 41, Hanover-Square. Introduction outlines contemporaneous historical background, with reference and bibliographic notes. Sermon delivered by Gershom Mendez Seixas. American rabbi and patriot; born in New York city Jan. 14, 1745; died there July 2, 1816; son of Isaac Mendez Seixas (1708-80) and Rachel Levy, daughter of Moses Levy, an early New York merchant. Seixas became the minister of Shearith Israel, the Spanish and Portuguese congregation of his native city, in 1766, and occupied the rabbinate for about half a century. At the outbreak of the American Revolution he at once espoused the Patriot cause, though many of the Christian ministers of the city sympathized with the Tories. After the war Seixas returned to New York (March 23, 1784) and resumed his former position as rabbi of Congregation Shearith Israel. He was one of the first ministers to preach a regular Thanks-giving Day sermon (see Daily Gazette, Dec. 23, 1789) , and was also one of the fourteen clergymen participating in the ceremony of the inauguration of George Washington as first president of the United States. In 1787 he became a trustee of Columbia College in the city of New York, and held that office continuously to 1815, being the only Jew ever so honored. History of the Jewish Reform movement from Mendelssohn to the Present. For many years considered the standard history in German on the Reform Movement. The author, Caesar Seligmann (18601950) , was leader of Liberal Judaism in Germany. Born in Landau, Seligmann was appointed preacher of the Liberal synagogue (Temple) in Hamburg in 1889, and from 1902 to 1939 he officiated as rabbi in Frankfurt. In 1910 he published for the Liberal synagogue (Western synagogue) a two-volume prayer book (Israelitisches Gebetbuch, 2nd ed. 1928) that was even more extreme than any proposed by the German Reform movement to that date. One of the founders of the Vereinigung fuer das liberale Judentum in 1910, he edited its organ, Liberales Judentum, which appeared from 1910 to 1922. In cooperation with I. Elbogen and H. Vogelstein, in 1929 he published the 'unified prayer book, ' restoring to the Liberal rite many traditional prayers which had been previously excluded. His other works include a collection of popular lectures, Judentum und moderne Weltanschauung (1905) , and a history of the Reform movement, Geschichte der juedischen Reformbewegung von Mendelssohn bis zur Gegenwart (1922) . When addressing the Liberal rabbis in Wiesbaden in 1937, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the rabbinical conference convened by A. Geiger, Seligmann advised his colleagues to become reconciled with Zionism. In 1939 he moved to London, where he lived until his death. His autobiography, Mein Leben.
