(Reliures de l’époque) 2 ff., 482 pp. - 2 ff., 477 pp. - 2 ff., 438 pp. - 2 ff., 466 pp.Deuxième édition de la traduction de Cecilia or Memoirs of an Heiress, le deuxième roman de Frances Burney, paru à Londres en 1782. Cette traduction avait d’abord paru à Genève en 5 volumes, un an plus tôt. Le traduction est de Henri RIEU (1721 - 1787), un célèbre traducteur genevois.Frances (ou Fanny) Burney (1752 - 1840) était une des filles du compositeur et musicologue Charles Burney. En 1793, elle épousera Alexandre d’Arblay, un émigré français qu’elle a connu au manoir de Juniper Hall dans le Surrey où, pendant la Révolution, madame de Staël recevait de nombreux émigrés. Eyries (in Biogr. Universelle) affirme que “ce qu’il y a de remarquable dans sa carrière littéraire, c’est que ses premiers romans furent composés pour l’amusement de son père, qui voulant se distraire de ses travaux sérieux, s’était mis à lire des romans. Il eut bientôt épuisé tous les chefs-d’œuvre du genre ; alors miss Burney, qui n’avait que 18 ans, essaya d’y suppléer et composa des romans qui ont été traduits dans toutes les langues et partout admirés.”Cécilia, orpheline de 21 ans, hérite d’un oncle. Mais une clause du testament exige qu’elle trouve un mari qui reprenne son nom. Les conventions sociales de son milieu ne permettent pas que cette clause soit respectée. Cécilia renonce à la fortune et se marie par amour après de très nombreuses péripéties.Jane Austen a trouvé dans Cecilia le titre de son plus célèbre roman, Orgueil et Préjugés, dans une phrase prononcée à la fin du roman par le docteur Lyster : Toute cette malheureuse affaire a été occasionnée par la vanité et les préjugés (tome IV, p. 444), soit the result or Pride and Prejudice dans le texte original anglais. Les romans de F. Burney ont fortement influencé la jeune Jane Austen. “F. Burney partage avec Jane Austen le sens picaresque féminin et du bizarre, lui révèle les possibilités du discours indirect ibre et aborde certains thèmes “féministes” que Jane Austen reprendra. Dans Northanger Abbey Jane rend un hommage appuyé à cette aînée : en effet les romans de F. Burney (...) critiquent l’hypocrisie de la société patriarcale car on y voit leurs personnages masculins oprimer les femmes qu’ils sont censés protéger (...) Les deux romans (Cécilia et Orgueil et Préjugés) se ressemblent d’ailleurs aussi bien par leurs personnages que par leur intrigue.” Claudia L. Johnson. Jane Austen. pp. 24-26. Bel exemplaire.
