Andrew Marvell was an English metaphysical poet, satirist and politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1659 and 1678. During the Commonwealth period he was a colleague and friend of John Milton. His poems range from the love-song "To His Coy Mistress", to evocations of an aristocratic country house and garden in "Upon Appleton House" and "The Garden", the political address "An Horatian Ode upon Cromwell's Return from Ireland", and the later personal and political satires "Flecknoe" and "The Character of Holland". Andrew Marvell (Winestead, 31 marzo 1621, Londra, 16 agosto 1678) è stato un poeta e politico inglese, parlamentarista e figlio di un prete della Chiesa anglicana (anche lui chiamato Andrew Marvell). Scrisse poemi di satira e di pastorale, che fece circolare come manoscritto, e la sua figura di poeta viene spesso associata a quella di John Donne, George Herbert e John Milton (di quest'ultimo fu anche amico e collega). Ebbe una prospettiva complessa della Rivoluzione inglese. Fu un puritano e amico di John Milton, ma fu moderato nella sua politica, e (a differenza di Milton) fu contrario all'esecuzione di Carlo I. Tuttavia, una delle sue poesie più note è un'ode in onore di Oliver Cromwell. Le Paradis perdu, qui occupe les trois premiers volumes, est traduit par Dupré de Saint-Maur et les remarques sont d'Addisson; il s'agit de la seconde édition, à la même année que la première, de la première traduction française du Paradis perdu. Certains auteurs ont pensé que le véritable traducteur était l'abbé de Boismorand. Brunet, III, 1731. Le volume suivant contient le Paradis reconquis, il s'agit de l'édition originale de la première traduction française, elle est due au jésuite Pierre de Mareuil. De Backer et Sommervogel, V, 539-9. Le volume suivant et dernier est formé des Lettres critiques ... du jésuite Bernard Routh, également en édition originale. De Backer et Sommervogel, VII, 237-4. Rare réunion en reliure uniforme. Les dos sont finement dorés, frappés d'une tulipe au pointillé entre les nerfs et d'une palette avec de petits soleils. Large folio, First and Sole Edition, on fine laid paper, with 47 fine separate large collotype facsimiles, each accompanied by a printed leaf bearing the transliterated text with variants and revisions as appropriate; disbound as issued, uncut, the collection housed in the publisher's original and substantial cloth portfolio, front lettered in gilt, gilt back, with original lock, the portfolio neatly and skilfully refurbished at several joints and the whole work in very good, clean state. Mild bookplate scar on inner cover of portfolio. In addition to the superb facsimiles, the work includes the editor's preface, and printed leaves of errata, notes and index. 'Each page of the MS. has been represented as far as possible by ordinary type, the words and letters printed in italic being those which in the MS. are struck out by the writer. It will be observed that some words in italic are underlined in the MS. This is to indicate that although they had been struck out they were to be restored. The peculiarities which could not be represented by the use of ordinary type are recorded in the Notes.' (Preface). Milton's manuscript volume remains the chief treasure of the College Library.
