Bon exemplaire.‎

‎Milton, John.‎

‎Paradise Regain'd: A poem in four books. To which is added Samson Agonistes; and Poems upon several Occasions. With a Tractate of Education.‎

‎London, J. Tonson, Richard James and Bethel Wellington, 1730.

‎Facsimile of the Manuscript of Milton's Minor Poems. Preserved in the Library of Trinity College Cambridge. [Preface by William Aldis Wright].‎

‎Large folio, First and Sole Edition, on fine laid paper, with 47 fine separate large collotype facsimiles, each accompanied by a printed leaf bearing the transliterated text with variants and revisions as appropriate; disbound as issued, uncut, the collection housed in the publisher's original and substantial cloth portfolio, front lettered in gilt, gilt back, with original lock, the portfolio neatly and skilfully refurbished at several joints and the whole work in very good, clean state. Mild bookplate scar on inner cover of portfolio. In addition to the superb facsimiles, the work includes the editor's preface, and printed leaves of errata, notes and index. 'Each page of the MS. has been represented as far as possible by ordinary type, the words and letters printed in italic being those which in the MS. are struck out by the writer. It will be observed that some words in italic are underlined in the MS. This is to indicate that although they had been struck out they were to be restored. The peculiarities which could not be represented by the use of ordinary type are recorded in the Notes.' (Preface). Milton's manuscript volume remains the chief treasure of the College Library. Insgesamt noch gutes Exemplar. First edition. English language edition. With engrave frontispiece (portrait of Milton) and red and black printed title page. Binding rubbed and partially chipped, joint partially torn, corners bumped, bookplate, flyleafs a bit loosened, endpapers foxed and book binder's glue stained, frontispiece with small stain (image) and crease mark (white margin), old owner's mark in ink on title page, last third of the book tidemark (just lighty darkened and only in few cases affecting the text minimally) with growing dirt smudge (not affecting the text) towards the end, pages lightly darkened and mostly throughout with faint but areal foxing.
