VERY SCARCE NINETEENTH CENTURY PRINTING. FROM THE WORKS OF JANE AUSTEN. One of the great novels of the 19th century and all time--a cornerstone of any collection of literature. The second edition appeared the same year as the first. This along with Austen’s first novel Sense and Sensibility mark the beginnings of an entirely new genre of writing and writers. <br> EMMA is considered by many to be Jane Austen’s most accomplished work and it is one which has unquestionably proven itself to be a lasting favorite over time. With the passing of nearly two full centuries the novel is as popular today as ever perhaps even more so. Modern readers seem to have no difficulty relating to Ms. Austen’s characters and situations most probably because Austen’s literary inventions are classic even while being current. Austen rejected the romantic and heroic tradition of such writers as Ann Radcliffe and concentrated on everyday people and typical English home life. In doing so she produced surprisingly modern novels that came impressively close to artistic perfection. The works collects 96 letters mostly from JA to her sister Cassandra which entered Brabourne's possession on the death of his mother Lady Knatchbull JA's favourite niece Fanny Knight. 'Brabourne contributes a discursive biographical and critical preface together with narrative and explanatory introductions to each section of the letters' Gilson. The second volume contains additional material including verses by JA and others. The frontispiece of first volume is a photograph of Zoffany's now disputed portrait; the second volume shows a wood-engraving by Pearson of Godmersham House home of JA's brother Edward. Yellow endpapers with lists of other titles published by Bentley. Neat previous owner bookplate to the top of the front paste down endpaper. Some staining to the bottom of the frontispiece not affecting the image or type otherwise a very clean and fresh copy. The cloth is clean and tidy with sharp corners and the gilt on the spine still bright and fresh. A little rubbing to the extremities but this is a superior copy. Scarce in such nice condition. A VERY SCARCE NINETEENTH CENTURY IMPRINT. FROM THE WORKS OF JANE AUSTEN. NORTHANGER ABBEY was written in 1798 but Austen was unable to find a publisher for it. Finally in 1803 she sold it to a bookseller in Bath for Å10. who tucked it away. Eventually it was sold back to the author for the original price and was not actually published until after her death. NORTHANGER ABBEY was one of Sir Watler Scott’s all time favorite novels and he is said to have read chapters of it at his evening gatherings. <br> Both NORTHANGER ABBEY AND PERSUASION were finally issued in 1818.<br>“PERSUASION was not begun until EMMA was finished and it was completed in August 1816 not many months before Miss Austen died.
