OCTOPUSSY AND THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS is the fourteenth and final James Bond book written by Ian Fleming. The book is a pair of shorter stories that were originally printed in magazines the novel was published posthumously.<br> In OCTOPUSSY agent 007 is assigned to apprehend a hero of the Second World War implicated in a murder involving a cache of Nazi gold. Atypically the story is told mostly from the point of view of Major Dexter Smythe the villain.<br> In THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS an unusually morose James Bond is assigned sniper duty to help British agent 272 escape from East Berlin. A contemporary non-authorial gift inscription on the FFEP otherwise a near fine copy in a price-clipped D/W that is VG indeed with a small chip from the top right hand edge of the back panel. The US first edition of this title is significantly rarer than its UK counterpart. SIGNED by IAN FLEMING on the HALF-TITLE. Although Fleming's usual practice was to sign on the FFEP it is perhaps understandable why on this occasion he decided to sign on the half-title because of the coloured end-papers and the gift inscription already there in another hand on the FFEP. Signed American first editions are uncommon and turn up far less frequently than their UK counterparts.
