HAWKES John.
The innocent party.
Four Short Plays by John Hawkes. Preface by Herbert Blau. 1967 Chatto & Windus London. Lge.double extra cr.16mo; pp.239i blank; plain bright blue cloth-textured boards. Fine copy in dust-wrapper with light vertical crease down spine. Norah Smallwood’s copy with her pencilled signature and two page references on the front end-paper. The page references refer to pages where there are erasures of pencilled notes evidenced by traces of India-rubber on the leaves: those on p.105 have been almost wholly erased but those on p.130 are still legible. They involve the addition to the end of the stage direction at l.17 the words “Then pensively says†and the revision of l.19 from “Even poor old Lord Nelson!†to “Even the poor old Duke of Cambridge!†Whether these alterations were in fact made in the published text we do not know. The book with the covers unlettered is evidently a trial copy of some kind and probably unique. Norah Smallwood was a director of Chatto & Windus. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated. hardcover
