A PHYLLIS OF THE SIERRAS AND A DRIFT FROM REDWOOD CAMP
Boston: Houghton Mifflin and Company 1888. First Edition. Small 8vo publisher’s original brown cloth decorated all over the front and spine in purple the rear in blind the upper cover also lettered in purple the spine gilt lettered. 215 pp. A very near to fine copy bright and fresh the cloth still rich and unfaded with exceptionally little wear internally very clean and completely free of foxing or spotting the hinges firm and tight. VERY SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. This is a collection of two novellas from one of the earliest American writers to emerge from the state of California. His witty sometimes heart-rending tales of frontier California earned him acclaim. Later in life Harte moved back east where Andrew Carnegie praised him as uniquely American: “A whispering pine of the Sierras transplanted to Fifth Avenue! How could it grow Although it shows some faint signs of life how sickly are the leaves! As for fruit there is none. America had in Bret Harte its most distinctively national poet.†Houghton, Mifflin and Company hardcover

A Sappho of Green Springs
Philadelphia: J B Lippincott 1890. First Edition. Original wraps. Very good. 39p Large octavo pp. 627-782 plus 58pp. of advertisements in two sections before and after main text. Very good or better in the publisher's printed wrappers with a chip to the crown the chip still present and laid-in mild edewear but clean and sound. Eugene Field's copy with his small bookplate to the interior front wrap and a lengthy ownership inscription by his son Eugene Field II on the title page. Housed in a handsome metallic gold-colored chemise and slipcase backed in brown morocco. Another handsome bookplate to the chemise. Very good . Softcover.

The true first printing of this collection by Bret Harte at the time among America's best-known and best-loved poets. This appearance in Lippincott's Magazine precedes the published book by more than six months per BAL 7352 see also 7356 and 7357 for the book edition first published in the UK in 1891.

Compared with a number of other important works which first appeared in this periodical The Picture of Dorian Gray some Doyle novels etc. this seems to be particularly scarce. This copy with appealing provenance having belonged to a fellow poet and one of the most celebrated bibliophiles of the era Eugene Field.

J B Lippincott paperback
