Gaston Ferdière's presentation copy of the scarce catalogue for the ambitious and highly influential International Surrealist Exhibition held in London in 1936 signed by a number of the participants.Presented by Mesens in red ink: 'Exemplaire de Gaston Ferdière' and beneath the signatures of André Breton in green Hans Arp in pencil Roland Penrose in blue ink Claude Cahun in blue grey Sheila Legge Rupert Lee and David Gascoyne all in sepia Paul Eluard in black ink and Man Ray in pencil; the following leaf with advertisements and adjacent to the details of the committee list of contributors etc. features an inscription in black ink by Conroy Maddox: 'Refused to participate / Conroy Maddox'.Gaston Ferdière was a controversial figure a Surrealist-affiliated poet who published verse in the mid-1930s a doctor who administered to the Spanish Republicans in the Spanish Civil War and a psychiatrist lauded and criticised for the electroshock therapy he administered to Antonin Artaud in the 1940s before Artaud's suicide in March 1948. Ferdière was a friend of Breton Crevel Desnos and Péret later Hans Bellmer and Unica Zûrn who he also treated and was anathemised by Isou another patient and the Lettrists along with psychiatrists and psychiatry in totality. At the titme of the London Surrealist Exhibition Ferdière had published a small handful of verse collections: 'L'Herbier' 1926 'La Chanson Fruste' 1927 'Ma Sébile' 1931 and 'Paix sur la Terre - Poèmes pour les Théâtres Prolétariens d'Action Contre la Guerre' 1936. 'No one personifies the thorny entanglement between modernism and the science of the soul better than Dr. Gaston Ferdière the psychiatrist who administered no less than 58 electroshock treatments to the Surrealist playwright Antonin Artaud during the Second World War. Determined to reconcile poetry and medicine Ferdière had studied under 'Professor Claude' - target of Breton’s anti-psychiatric rants - at Sainte-Anne while at the same time passing as a 'star of Surrealism in the bistros' of Paris in the mid-1930s . By the time Artaud showed up on his doorstep at Rodez psychiatric hospital Ferdiére had long since abandoned his poetic aspirations. Yet his old interests were rekindled in long conversations with the Surrealist playwright whose talents he sought to revive by a combination of 'art therapy' - writing drawing translating Lewis Carroll’s 'Through the Looking Glass' - and shock treatments - six courses ranging from 4 to 13 sessions each between June 20th 1943 and January 24th 1945. Electroshock was still in its experimental phase - the machine had hardly rolled in the door at Rodez - and the convulsions were so severe that Artaud fractured a vertebra in his neck during one of the treatments.' Kevin Repp.The International Surrealist Exhibition was held at the New Burlington Galleries from 11 June - 4 July 1936 organised by committees from England France Belgium and Scandinavia. The scale and range of works from artists was highly impressive see a list of exhibiting artists below and London was acting alongside Paris and New York in focusing on the new movement. In the same year Alfred Barr opened a show at the Museum of Modern Art New York entitled 'Fantastic Art Dada and Surrealism' and Paris' 'Cahiers d'Art' journal then at the height of its influence had devoted a whole issue to the Surrealist object. The exhibition comprising of some 390 works painting sculpture drawing and objects was opened by André Breton to some two thousand people thereafter averaging a footfall of one thousand people per day. Corti 1931. A scarce bookseller's catalogue issued by one of the principal distributors of Surrealist works in Paris. The famous chart of authors prescribed and invalidated by the Surrealists "Lisez / Ne Lisez" appears for the first time in print on the lower wrapper of this catalogue. The Librairie José Corti on the Rue de Clichy served as the occasional headquarters of the collective imprint Editions Surréalistes. Ernst's steel-engraved collage on the cover was specially made for the bookstore. The catalogue offers for sale the works of Maxime Alexandre Louis Aragon André Breton René Char René Crevel Salvador Dali Paul Eluard Max Ernst Benjamin Péret Tristan Tzara Pierre Unik and Luis Bunuel. Most of the portraits tipped-in are reproductions of photographs taken by Man Ray. Each author is given one page with their works listed with prices and noted when "épuisé." Below the listings are excerpts of contemporary reviews and commentary on the authors and the Surrealist movement as a whole. Breton and Eluard's "L'Immaculée Conception" is offered on page 9 followed by reviews of the work. Brussels: Galerie des Éditions La Boétie 1945. <br /><br />Small Octavo 7 9/16 x 5 5/8 inches; 192 x 143 mm 16 pages of text and 8 pages of plates in stapled illustrated wrappers. <br /><br />Scarce catalogue of a Surrealism exhibition that took place from December 15 1945 to January 15 1946 at Galerie des Éditions La Boétie in Brussels. The catalogue features eight pages of black-and-white photos of some of the works in the exhibition along with texts by André Breton Paul Nougé Marcel Mariën Tristan Tzara Paul Éluard René Magritte and Louis Scutenaire. <br /><br />The catalogue lists 167 works in the exhibition by such artists as Hans Arp Giorgio de Chirico Max Ernst Paul Klee René Magritte Marcel Mariën Paul Nougé and Raoul Ubac. The cover illustration is Magritte's "Le Viol" 1945. <br /><br />OCLC lists nine institutional holdings: Hofstra MOMA the Getty Art Institute of Chicago Northwestern Johns Hopkins Princeton Philadelphia and the Menil Collection. Listed under two OCLC accession numbers: 9727431 and 1138935734. Scarce in commerce. <br /><br />CONDITION: Wrappers soiled with heavy edge wear and a few nicks. Internally clean and unmarked some toning to the newsprint pages rusting to staples and a small tear in the last page not affecting any text. A Good copy. Very heavily illustrated with drawings photographs facsimiles etc. Pale green wrappers somewhat tanned at edges neatly recased with shallow loss at crown and toe of spine usual light foxing otherwise a very good copy in lightly chipped and tanned glassine wrapper. This copy is significantly better than the norm for this book. First edition. A multi-disciplinary exercise in self-explanation drawing on primary texts for the definition of terms and tendencies and reproductions of artworks by those who at various times found or placed themselves under the umbrella of SURREALISME. The work was compiled to accompany the Exposition International du Surréalisme organized by Breton and Eluard with the assistance of Duchamp Ernst Dali and others and the uncommon 8pp. catalogue of the exhibition inevitably a bit tanned is laid in. Sous Couverture de Marcel Duchamp. This book was issued in two editions: a "super-limited" edition of 20 copies sur japon comportant un inedit et une "couverture-cigarette" par Marcel Duchamp. This edition was offered at the vast sum of 300 fr back in 1936. The so-called "regular" edition of 200 copies sur velin went for the modest price of 35 fr. Condition of sheet is very good. Klagnefurt, Haid, 1950 ; in-8°, bradel, demi maroquin noir, plats de papier vert, couverture conservée (lobstein) - Seul volume paru de cette revue qui était destinée à publier en allemand des textes et des illustrations surréalistes internationales. Le peintre sarrois Edgar Jené et Max Hölzer en furent les directeurs. La publicité disait : "" Die erste Manifestation der Avant garde auf geistigem und Sozialem Gebiet in deutscher Sprache "". L'ouvrage contient des textes de A. Breton, P. Mabille, J. Gracq, A. Césaire, M. Nadeau, Arpad Mezci, S. Alexandrian, M. Hölzer, G. Henein. Un des textes de Breton concerne la peinture de Jené, peintre surréaliste auquel J. Gracq consacre également un article dans cette revue, l'intitulant "" le désintégrateur "". On trouve aussi dans ce recueil 4 poèmes du grand poète PAUL CELAN : "" Lob der Ferne, In Agypten, Wer sein Herz aus der Brust resst..., Kristal "". Paul Celan a aussi contribué comme traducteur à ce volume. On lui doit les traductions des poèmes de Breton, Péret, Cesaire, etc. Les autres traducteurs furent Erica Lillegg (romancière autrichienne femme de E. Jené), E. Jené et M. Hôlzer. Illustration de V. Brauner, Behrens, E. Donati, Max Ernst, Maurice Henry, Marcel Jean, E. Jenè, F. Rogier, Tanguy et Toyen. Bel exemplaire bien relié."
