Women / Education. Gilchrest Florence Elinor 1906 1997 Compiler
RUSSELL SAGE COLLEGE SCRAPBOOK 1923 - 1927. Compiled by a Student
Troy NY 1927. Green cloth album bound with a leather cord with emblem of the college and Ms. Gilchrest's name stamped in gilt to the front board. Mostly tan or light gray wove paper leaves with a center section of sturdier gray paper leaves for photographs. Moderate wear to extremities damp-spots to front board near joint; few leaves chipped to edges; some biopredation to bottom edge of last section of leaves not affecting the archived material; few items loose or apparently detached and missing. Some heavier/bulkier items i.e. a lollipop several candles a Chesterfield cigarette etc. show evidence of wear from pressure and movement. Material and notations generally clean well-preserved and legible albeit with fold-lines or other signs of use. Gd condition overall. Printed title leaf plus 35 scrapbook leaves 10 unused. B/w photographs ranging in size from ~2-1/2" x 1" cutout photos of particular individuals to ~4-1/2" x 2-3/4" with the majority averaging ~3-1/2" x 2-1/2". Additional b/w class photo 7-7/8" x 9-1/2" laid in at the rear in glassine envelope. 11-3/4" x 16-1/2"

Founded in 1916 by suffragist Margaret Olivia Slocum Sage with the assistance of Eliza Kellas Russell Sage College was created with the intention to provide an education in the "practical arts" and as such was "one of the very first institutions to offer women the means of economic and social independence through preparation for professional careers" per the Sage College website. This scrapbook documents the experience of Florence Elinor Gilchrest a member of the class of 1927 who majored in French and English and if various notes and comments in the scrapbook are any indication became a teacher after graduation. The scrapbook presumably purchased from the college for the purpose of a student recording her time there is divided up into four major sections: 7 leaves printed with columns for the name address date and comments of various friends and fellow students on each page 3 leaves unused; 8 leaves for theater events 3 pages of which are printed with columns for the name location comments etc. of each performance and filled out by hand by Ms. Gilchrest with the rest containing affixed programs for some 45 performances; 8 sturdier leaves for photos containing 48 b/w photos and 3 b/w photo reproductions of the school grounds on 4 leaves 4 leaves left blank; and 11 leaves documenting the assortment of other activities accomplishments etc. of Ms. Gilchrest's student career 3 leaves blank. Florence Elinor Gilchrest who went by her middle name Elinor appears to have been well-liked socially active in a variety of school and local events and a good student serving as an English tutor in her senior year. 67 classmates wrote notes to her in the beginning "friends and comments" section the theater section is filled to bursting and the miscellany at the end traces her first initiation dinner a letter for which strictly instructs her to wear a midi and dark skirt and say nothing whatsoever at the meal and below which she has written "And I didn't even laugh!" through to her graduation ending on a postscript of news articles about Sage Hall burning in 1928 after she had left. Although many of the photos are uncaptioned or are captioned only minimally i.e. "My friends" they depict Elinor and her friends on the school grounds outside various buildings on outings in the woods and in one photo simply captioned "Shame!" skinny dipping in a creek. Of particular note is an original photograph of Robert Frost from his 1925 visit to the college presumed to have been purchased as a souvenir rather than taken by Elinor herself and below which she has written "Celebrities"; two other photographs included in this caption depict unidentified groups of women. A class photo presumably Ms. Gilchrest's is laid in. Among the items included in the scrapbook are: a silver plastic spoon a lollipop several candles a whole Chesterfield cigarette a birthday telegram a copy of the Russell Sage Student Handbook "The Freshman Bible!" various invitations on napkins or in their original envelopes newspaper clippings student publications including "The Quill" a large button a bottle cap candy wrappers a ribbon and dried orchid a Pullman ticket various other travel and theatre tickets and more. All in all a comprehensive and unique record of one woman's experience at a college founded to prepare women for the workforce. hardcover

Women / Health.
Why Haven't We Women Been Told This Thing Before
Middlefield Connecticut: Dainty-Maid Inc. 1938. Very Good. 5-1/2" x 3-1/2". Unpaginated but 17 pp including the rear inside cover. White stapled wrappers printed in green and black. Spine rubbed with light horizontal creasing and a slight bump to the crown. Promotional brochure for Dainty-Maid douching products including the Dainty-Maid Personal Powder "Return Flow" Syringe and travel bag "the only improvement made in douche bags in twenty years."As is often the case in such brochures of this period not douching is presented as the cause for all sorts of "feminine" problems from leathery and/or pimpled skin to emaciation hair loss irritability nagging fatigue etc. It is "one of the great causes of divorce" and as for the title question the answer from a male doctor is "Because you women have shut yourselves in by prudery by a false show of innocence and by a childish faith that somehow you would escape somehow you would be spared somehow you would be protected." A breathtaking example of health "education" as a form of women's repression.OCLC locates 3 copies from different years. [Dainty-Maid, Inc.] hardcover

Natural Childbirth before Your Eyes! The Complete Story Told in Photographs. Cover title
New York: Ben Adler Advertising Service Inc. 1958. Good. 11" x 8-1/2". 31 1 pp. Black and white printed self-wrappers stapled. Scuffing to front cover; two short tears to fore-edge of cover and most leaves not affecting text. Movie tie-in booklet for "The Case of Dr. Laurent" which promoted the then-newfangled techniques of Dr. Fernand Lamaze as well as the importance of educating expectant mothers to reduce fear of childbirth. The film is set in a French mountain town and stars Nicole Courcel as an unwed mother who bucks local prejudices and accepts Dr. Laurent's Jean Gabin training in natural childbirth; she eventually trains the other women in the town and delivers her baby painlessly convincing both her fellow townspeople and a skeptical medical review board of the success of the new method. In addition to a 15 pp series of captioned movie stills charting the plotline of the film the book includes an 8 pp section of photographs showing Courcel demonstrating exercises for pregnant women and new mothers as well as tips for parents and excerpts from a 1956 speech by Pope Pius XII quelling moral concerns about natural childbirth which the pope blames on "associations of ideas created by surroundings" rather than biblical teachings natch.Oddly scarce. OCLC locates only three holdings of this booklet. Ben Adler Advertising Service, Inc. unknown

Women / Sports. Johnson Rose Subject.
Photograph of International Speed Skating Champion Rose Johnson
Chicago n. d. Near Fine. Circa 1921. 9-3/8" x 6-7/8". B/w photograph of Rose Johnson posing in her ice skates wearing a coat bedecked in medals and with five trophies on the ground in front of her; the center trophy bears her name and appears to read "30th Annual Northwest." which we presume is Chicago's 30th Annual Northwest Skating Club tournament held in 1921. Merest hint of wear to corners else fine. Rose Johnson was a women's amateur ice skating star from the late 1910s until at least the mid-1920s and was particularly well-regarded in her native Chicago skating for the Northwest Skating Club and according to newspaper accounts easily winning almost every local race she competed in. She won the women's international skating championship in 1920 and was a fierce competitor in events in the US and Canada throughout the early 1920s.Few photographs of Johnson appear to exist and those we have found are press photos; no records in OCLC mention her. unknown

WOMEN American Woman's League
Final Certificate of Active Membership in Founder's Chapter The American Woman's League
University City Missouri: American Woman's League 1910. Enterprising publisher Edward Gardner Lewis established the American Woman's League-an organization that promoted educational cultural and business opportunities for women-in University City Missouri in 1907. To drum up business--and also because he had a genuine interest in women's rights and other social reforms--Lewis offered free membership in the League to any woman who sold $52 worth of subscriptions to his various magazines which included Woman's Magazine and Woman's Farm Journal. Supported by these sales the League offered women a variety of social and educational opportunities and included a correspondence school savings bank and service organizations that provided for the homeless and for orphans. Benefits were available to all paid members at no cost. By 1910 there were reportedly 700 chapters and approximately 100000 members. Each member would have been awarded a certificate like this one which features photographs of League Chapter Houses in Edwardsville Illinois and Lebanon Missouri and the Woman's Magazine Building and Press Annex and Woman's National Daily Building both in University City. Despite the numbers apparently issued few of these certificates appear to have survived. Single sheet of cream stock 8.5 x 11 inches with affixed red seal blindstamped "June 11 1910." Decorative border photographic "watermark" behind the text. Filled out for one Cora B. Cramer of Monterey California. Horizontal creasing staple holes at the upper left corner original receipt detached from lower edge not present else about fine.
