‎Women in the American West A collection of 410 titles‎

‎VAST COLLECTION OF 410 WORKS ON WOMEN IN THE AMERICAN WEST: Books and Ephemera from the Collection of Dorothy Sloan‎

‎V.p. 1996. A collection of 410 titles concerning Women in the West. Condition Statement: Overall most of the books in the collection are in "good" or "good" condition which typically describes a book that is sufficiently worn the binding soiled scuffed stained or spotted and may have loose joints hinges pages etc. To a lesser extent there are books in "fair" condition namely a well-worn book that has complete text pages including those with maps or plates but may lack endpapers half-title etc. The binding and/or jacket may also be worn. Women in the American West: Books and Ephemera from the Collection of Dorothy Sloan. SEE DETAILED FINDING AID on our website. <br/><br/>Dorothy Sloan b. 1943 is justly considered to be one of great scholar-booksellers of Western Americana Texana and Latin Americana. Dorothy Sloan Rare Books auction catalogues are recognized as models of their kind and feature an unusually broad array of printed books maps manuscripts and ephemera and are particularly strong in 19th-century materials. In many instances Sloan's bibliographic descriptions have become the description of record.<br/>She began her career at John Howell in San Francisco and thence to Jenkins Company in Austin. She issued her first rare book catalogue in 1984 and her first auction catalogue in 1994. Suffice it to say that as a woman she was literally a pioneer in such an endeavor. <br/><br/>Over the years she built a collection of Women in the West which is described in the 29-page Inventory below. Here is a collection of both women authors and women as the subject of historical and literary narrative. Most of the collection was kept in storage for the last twenty-eight years awaiting cataloguing and eventual sale. As we all know "Life" often interferes with our plans particularly as we grow older. <br/><br/>When Dorothy retired last year we acquired the collection of Women in the West. We are pleased to offer it en bloc for the price of $8200 which includes free shipping in the Continental United States. <br/><br/>Of the 410 titles in the collection nearly 25% are more than a century old. The earliest book in the collection is Sally Hastings' Poems on different subjects. To which is added a descriptive account of a family tour to the West. Lancaster 1808. The author describes her travels from Lancaster County to Washington PA. through the Alleghenies and gives an account of the Ohio River at Pittsburgh.<br/><br/>Only a handful of titles in the collection were published in the last 30 years the "newest" one dated 1996 namely: Anne Butler and Ona Siporin Uncommon common women. which contains culturally and ethnically diverse accounts of women who lived in the American West.<br/><br/>The physical size of the collection is considerable. Without any packing material it would encompass 15 large boxes. There are photographs gum cards engravings various inscribed books plays of the California Gold Rush memoirs and captivity narratives travelogues captivity narratives autobiographies Western novels pamphlets private press material a few 'zines journals catalogues and magazines. It is the culmination of decades of labor spanning all genres in the Western Americana tradition. The collection represents women's voices of a myriad of ethnicities including various Native American tribes African and African-American women Hispanic women prostitutes madams cowgirls ranchers pioneers and their struggles in the face of physical social and cultural adversity. <br/><br/>We are reluctant to mention "highlights" as it would suggest that "lowlights" do not merit attention from scholars and bibliophiles alike. We invite readers to peruse the Inventory of the collection capably prepared by Hunter Corb to allow readers to make that determination for themselves. <br/><br/>Included is the first edition of Miriam Colt's autobiography which describes her ill-fated expedition to Kansas Went to Kansas 1862 in which she traveled more than 1300 miles to establish a communal vegetarian colony. Colt provides vivid and frightening details of a family's ordeals on the frontier landscape including severe illness and encounters with lawless gangs. Defrauded of their investment in the Vegetarian Settlement Company the Colts left Kansas in the fall of 1856. Colt's husband and son died en route leaving only mother and daughter to return to New York. <br/><br/>Another work of interest is Sarah Hopkins's Life Among the Piutes an autobiography written at the encouragement of Ralph Waldo Emerson. This is considered to be the first book written and published in English by a Native American woman. It provides "extensive information about pre-White northern Paiute culture the types of foods marriage and other social practices as well as political leadership" Paher while simultaneously increasing awareness and sympathy for the plight of Native Americans. <br/><br/>Melinda Rankin's Twenty Years Among the Mexicans describes her missionary labor in south Texas and Mexico. Herein are depicted the experiences of the first Protestant woman missionary in Latin America. Although laws in Mexico at the time forbade the introduction of any form of Protestantism into the country Rankin traveled there in 1852 and established the first Protestant mission in Northern Mexico continuing her work there for a few decades before returning to the United States due to health problems. This narrative describes not just Rankin's missionary labors but also many dramatic events in Texas and Mexico including revolutionary turmoil the American Civil War and her capture by the notorious military leader rancher and outlaw Juan Cortina.<br/><br/>From early settlers of the West during and shortly after the American Revolution; to ranchers and pioneering women in the early days of the Republic of Texas and the fight for independence; to overland travels in covered wagons on the famed Oregon Trail at the outset of the American Civil War; to excursions into Mexico and Latin America at the end of the 19th and into the 20th centuries. Over two hundred years of women's experiences can be found within this collection and as such there is something for every student and subject matter.<br/><br/>SEE DETAILED FINDING AID ON OUR WEBSITE which enumerates each and every one of the 410 titles:<br/><br/>https://www.michaellaird.com/cat.phpid=307. unknown books‎

‎Women in the War poster‎

‎Women in the War We Can't Win Without Them" Extra large Original WW II Poster‎

‎Original WW II Poster from 1942 reads "Women in the War We Can't Win Without Them" Extra large size poster 29" x 41" in. Shows a woman factory worker wearing overalls or apron riveting with both hands a weapon that looks like a torpedo. This highly visual poster was promoting women in the wartime workforce it was produced in 1942 by the War Manpower Commission. At the time "Women in the War" was one of the most widely distributed images of a woman laboring in war production. The poster is in red blue and black poster. Publisher was the United States. Government Printing Office. Place of Publication: "Washington D.C." By 1943 when the labor shortage was most acute the two agencies worked together in concerted campaigns targeting employers to hire women and women to become 'production soldiers'" Yellin Our Mothers' War p. 44. Women laboring in factories even in the service of the war effort was controversial. "Despite the tide of public opinion against working wives War Manpower Commission director Paul McNutt concentrated on on patriotism. The campaigns glamorized war work always showing that women could maintain their femininity and still be useful" Yellin pp. 45-46. Examples of this important poster are held at numerous institutions including the Library of Congress and MOMA. At lower left corner of sheet: "War Manpower Commission Washington D.C." Copies in very good condition like this one are uncommon. unknown books‎

‎Women in Wartime Caroline Kirkland Loyal Publication Society‎

‎A Few Words on Behalf of the Loyal Women of the United States by One of Themselves‎

‎New York: Wm. C. Bryant & Co Printers 1863. First edition. Very Good . Original paper wraps. 23 pages. Number 10 in a series of 17 pamphlets addressing the causes and outcomes of the Civil War. One of two variant printings with no priority assigned this with page 23 beginning "attempt at corrupting." Some separation to the foot of spine with text block holding well. Soiling and edgewear to front wrap; rusted imprint of paperclip affecting top of pages 13-15. Small blot to text of page 13. Else a solid copy of this important work which suggests that all women who have survived the Civil War deserve credit for their strength and sacrifice. While at its release A Few Words was anonymous an 1865 publication by the Loyal Publication Society attributes the work to Caroline Kirkland Mrs. C. M. Kirkland. Kirkland a writer educator and abolitionist brought a unique perspective to the debate on women's roles in the Civil War. A Northerner by birth she spend the years leading up to the war living with her husband on a homestead in Michigan. Her experience living in the North and West and traversing the South informs her response to the accusation being made by men on both sides: that the strength of Southern women and the apathy of Northern women had contributed to seccession and the duration of the conflict. According to Kirkland's argument women on both sides nursed sick soldiers rationed and experienced the losses of husbands brothers and fathers. Yet Kirkland argues that women of the South are implicated in the evils of slavery. "They having seen slavery felt it known its horrors suffered under its attendant evils and learned.its incompatibility with God's benign law of love have deliberately lent themselves.to the perpetuation of so awful an evil." As an abolitionist and a women's rights activist Kirkland highlights the cognitive dissonance involved in promoting the strength of women who refuse to recognize that their fight for equality is tied to that of all oppressed Americans. She concludes with hope from the West where she comments that strong-minded women have rejected courtships and shunned deserters who refuse to stand their ground. A rare and interesting work documenting a Union woman's perspective on American women's responsibilities in wartime. History of American Women. Very Good . Wm. C. Bryant & Co Printers unknown‎

Jo Freeman a.k.a. "Joreen" urges feminists to appropriate the once-derogatory term "Bitch" arguing that its use as a term for a woman who "rudely violates conceptions of proper sex role behavior" is a positive thing famously stating that "A woman should be proud to declare she is a Bitch because Bitch is Beautiful" p. 2. ‎A Study of the Problem of Girl Delinquency in New Haven‎

‎New Haven CT: Civic Federation of New Haven 1915. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. 6 x 9 in.39 pp in original stapled wrappers with a double-page "Map Showing Girl Delinquency Areas in the City of New Haven Conn." Two names in pencil on front wrapper some handling wear; very good. Number 15 in the series Documents of the Civic Federation of New Haven produced by their Committee on Social and Industrial Conditions. The study--which was based on a review of seven years of police and court records as well as "mental examinations" of girls and interviews with teachers employers police doctors and others--investigated causal factors in "girl delinquency" defined as any illegal activity by a girl aged 7-21 and the handling of cases by the court system. Causes identified include lack of supervision at home and in the community especially in dark movie theaters access to alcohol at dance halls and cafes and the "influence of a small proportion of the students at the University" who patronize the "girls walking up and down and standing on corners until late every night." The report concludes with detailed recommendations for improvement including changing in the attitude of the legal system toward the girls focusing on rehabilitation rather than punishment more careful selection of and higher pay for probation officers improved record-keeping improved coordination with outside agencies and creation of a "thoroughly modern and up-to-date detention home" for girls and women. ‎Women Labor Massachusetts Greene JJ. J. J.‎

‎Group Portrait of Female Mill Workers Lawrence Massachusetts c. 1880s‎

‎Lawrence 1880. Albumen photograph on card stock 7 x 4 inches. Good. Working conditions were notoriously bad in Lawrence one of the industrial hubs of the textile industry in the late nineteenth century after the harnessing of the Merrimack River's water power in 1845. The city was a hub of immigration - mostly Irish - and many immigrants who were familiar with mill work flocked to the city in the 1850s. In 1860 an accident at the Pemberton Mill killed 145 workers. The Bread and Roses strike of 1912 also known as the Lawrence Textile Strike was the culmination of decades of poor working conditions. This uncommon occupational photograph of female mill workers gives scant clues as to the background of the workers or specifics of the factory. We find no record of the photographer a J.J. Greene based in Lawrence. The seven women pictured are mostly looking off-camera suggesting that the photographer had a companion. The date is unknown but the albumen cabinet card format and general feel suggest a date of 1880s-1890s. An uncommon occupational photograph of women in Lawrence's mills. Good condition overall fading to image and some light foxing verso with tears from tape removal. unknown‎

‎Women Literature Boyce Neith‎

‎Proud Lady. With Autograph Letter to the Critic Rebecca Lowrie Signed‎

‎New York: Alfred A. Knopf 1923. First Edition. With an autograph letter signed with the envelope affixed to the front pastedown. With the bookplate of John and Rebecca Lowrie on front free endpaper. Lowrie reviewed the work for the New York Post and her review of the book affixed to the half-title. Very Good. Neith Boyce was an author and theater artist who worked across genres publishing a range of works and co-founding the Provincetown Players. Boyce and her husband Hutchins Hapgood were at the social center of a large circle of writers and artists including Gertrude Stein Georgia O'Keefe and Djuna Barnes. Their papers held at Yale provide rich insight into their artistic and literary era. Proud Lady was the second-to-last novel Boyce wrote and it was apparently her favorite. The novel is the story of Mary Carlin a woman who seeks spiritual perfection in others and who because of her pride cannot make herself leave her unfaithful husband. Rebecca Lowrie in her review written for the New York Post and included here states "all the vividness of the setting the touches which make the people so sure a part of their surroundings are secondary to the tragic figure of the proud lady and the victims of her pride." Boyce's letter to Lowrie effusively thanks her for her review of the book which from her tone appears to have been misunderstood by other critics. She writes "I have just seen your review of my novel Proud Lady. It is the most intelligent and best-written review that I have seen so far and I would like to convey to you my appreciation and the pleasure your attitude toward the book has given me." Overall a very nice association and a very good copy of an uncommon book. Some light wear and rubbing a few faint scuffs to cloth on the front board slightest bowing to spine but very good. Letter near fine with minimal wear. $450. Alfred A. Knopf unknown‎

‎Women Massachusetts Haverhill‎

‎Eight Journals Documenting Life in Haverhill Massachussetts 1890-1925 Meticulously Assembled from Cut Photographs and Postcards‎

‎Haverhill 1940. First Edition. Seven journals each approximately 70 pages with pages measuring 4 x 2 inches. Near Fine. These journals by an unnamed member of the Dean family of Haverhill were assembled around 1940 from collected family and historical photographs. Taken as a whole they provide a richly detailed social history of the region from the perspective of a well-to-do military family with many ties to the local business community. They bridge the gap from the post-Civil War era with reference to G.A.R. reunions and the like to the late 1920s. The author's perspective - conservative sometimes horribly bigoted with a penchant for underlining key passages of her own writing - is on full display throughout. We have not identified the author though she is shown in several photographs. Much of the journals recount the details of civic-minded local life often with surprising detail. On an evening in city hall she writes "the walls hung with banners - flags and scrolls of all descriptions front of boxes were elaborately draped the stage represented a campground. " Two entries for 1886 log a fire in Music Hall followed by an account of the "First Hebrew Jew Wedding" about which she writes "too bad it wasn't the last no doubt the people of Haverhill would have been just as well off and I believe better." Some entries show the way in which information from the outside world was filtered by various family members who left Haverhill. An account of a family member's adventures in the Alaskan gold fields " It was very interesting to hear them tell of their experience.the picnic parties and good fishing for salmon and trout in the summer when the weather is warm and nice. Also the Ways of the eskimo. the gold nuggets nice to look at too;" Interspersed with the diary entries are many cut photographs and postcards some of family and some of the region and the author weaves her entries onto the versos of the photographs from the diary paper. The photographs are meticulously trimmed in a uniform rounded edge with an impressive aesthetic result. The diaries were likely assembled in the late 1930s or early 1940s as one mentions the hurricane of 1938. Overall they show an uncommonly detailed and lengthy account of a family's life in Massachusetts with much information about the civic history of the Haverhill region. Well preserved in near fine condition with minimal normal wear. unknown‎

‎Photograph Album of roughly 1400 Pictures Taken by a Young Woman with a Connection to the Cabot Family of Boston Showing a Modern Eye for Composition Circa 1930‎

‎Boston 1930. Oblong quarto 49 pp. With appx. 1400 photos most measuring less than an inch square with roughly 175 in larger formats up to 3 by 5 inches. Very Good. A wonderful labor of photographic love created by an unidentified young woman with ties to the Cabot family of Beacon Hill. The album composed largely of tiny contact prints glued in neat grids. Off-kilter compositions - a portion of a steeple against the sky the tail of a dog etc. - are mixed in with more traditional landscapes leading one to question whether the photographer had modernist aspirations or just took a lot of pictures. The photographer is unknown but our best guess is that it was someone who was a friend of Ellen Cabot of Beacon Hill perhaps while both were students or just after. Ellen Cabot the most frequent subject of the album is shown in a variety of settings often accompanied by her dog Prowler. Aerial photography the New England coastline camping life in Cambridge and equestrian competition are all on display. Other highlights include a dog named Benito Mussolini and artful shots of a monk's torso. A portion of the photos perhaps five or ten percent are not present though the album is otherwise in excellent condition. Handwritten label on the front reads "Newport Races to Topsfield autumn 1930". Overall the album is a testament to the energy and spontaneity of youth and the possibilities of the photographic form as well as an intimate look into Boston's storied upper class. unknown‎

" He discusses the case of the one hospital steamer they have; he notes it has three surgeons twelve male and five female nurses. Yeatman speaks of the generous contributions of the "ladies of New England especially Massachusetts" and the hopes he has for a second floating hospital. He notes that a major battle is imminent in the Tennessee area and speaks of sending supplies. He thanks her for directing the attendance of Mr. Bernard to his commission and finally asks for more clothes including vests and pants.<br/><br/>"Miss Howe" the recipient of the letter was Mary Eleanor Howe who was born June 27 1817 in Worthington Massachusetts. "Women's Army Auxiliary Corps / U.S. Army / Apply at any U.S. Army recruiting and induction station." Spurred on by the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7 1941 Congress approved the creation of WAAC on May 14 1942 to enhance the US military force and staff non-combat roles with women workers to create a larger male fighting force; they realized that women could supply additional resources desperately needed in both military and industrial sectors. Members of the WAAC were the first women other than nurses to serve within the ranks of the United States Army and over 150000 American women served in the Women's Army Corps during World War II. Given the opportunity to make a major contribution to the national war effort women seized it. They drove trucks repaired airplanes worked as laboratory technicians rigged parachutes served as radio operators analyzed photographs and more. By the end of the war their contributions would be widely heralded and even General Eisenhower felt that he could not win the war without the aid of the women in uniform. "The contribution of the women of America whether on the farm or in the factory or in uniform to D-Day was a sine qua non of the invasion effort." Ambrose D-Day 489. Repaired vertical tear down center. 3 horizontal crease marks. 1 x ½" loss to bottom left corner. ½" closed tear in bottom right edge. In good condition. unknown books‎
