‎WOMEN POWELL Dawn‎

‎Whither‎

‎Boston: Small Maynard & Company 1925. First Edition. Hardcover. Attractive copy of Powell's first novel an autobiographical work recounting the story of an idealistic Midwestern girl who moves to New York aspiring to be a playwright. She settles into a boarding house for women surrounded by a cast of characters who are perpetually out of money deeply concerned with their wardrobes and trying to find a man. She finds fulfilling work as a copy writer navigates her way throughout a string of suitors all the while soliciting advice from her housemates quits her job and briefly entertains the idea of taking up with a Greenwich Village bohemian and writing plays full-time; she abandons her dreams after accepting an eleventh hour proposal from a wealthy suitor embarks on a steamship to London with her man and sails off toward her new life with the words "Is the world really so gorgeous as this" The earlier part of the novel at least somewhat mirrors Powell's own experiences. She led a somewhat unhappy childhood in Ohio where her stepmother took pleasure at burning her early attempts at poetry and fiction; after moving in with a supportive aunt and attending Lake Erie College she moved to Manhattan to pursue a career as a writer finding work as a publicist for several organizations before marrying her husband an advertising executive named Joseph Gousha and settling in Greenwich Village where she would live out the rest of her life. Her marriage allowed her to quit her job and focus on her writing full-time "using the Children's Reading Room of the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue as the place to write. What became the classic elements of Dawn Powell's work were in evidence from the outset. Her first novel Whither.has the characteristic satiric tone mordant wit and unforgiving eye for the foibles of middle-class Americans whether they lived in the Middle West the setting for her early work or were newly arrived midwestern émigrés to the big city of New York desperately seeking sophistication" Carnes Mark C. "Dawn Powell." Invisible Giants: Fifty Americans Who Shaped the Nation but Missed the History Books p.232. Powell disavowed her literary debut leaving it out of lists of her publications throughout her lifetime and referring to She Walks In Beauty 1928 as her first novel. ‎Women Property Rights Sir Thomas Erskine Perry‎

‎Early 1856 Pair of Letters Gathering Legal Support for the UK Married Woman's Property Act‎

‎Women's Property Rights Perry Sir Thomas Erskine. Pair of Autograph Letters Signed circa 1856 to an unnamed female correspondent about married women's property equality. Totaling 8 handwritten pages both signed "E Perry" both in good condition with only mild age related toning to paper.<br/> <br/>Perry a liberal politician and proponent of women's property rights actively petitioned in the House of Commons for the extension of legal and financial autonomy to women. In the first 4 page letter dated 14 March 1856 Perry writes that his female correspondent's "petition in the House was I think well received.get up as many petitions as possible from different places to be presented on or before that day in favor of a change of the law.and have it signed by men as well as women." Notably Perry recognized the need for alliance and collaboration among men and women and he positioned gender equality as a human rights issue.<br/> <br/>By the time of his second 4 page letter n.d. missing the opening pages Perry writes his correspondent with points of argument for changes in women's property law. These include "Rights and Responsibilities of Husbands and Wives" "Obligations to Support Children" and "Liability to be sued on her own contracts." While Perry acknowledges that he will need to "study the provisions of the law of this & other countries on the subject" he also asks his correspondent if she and her friends can provide him concrete "examples of the evils sustained under the present law" thus providing him a "cloud of witnesses" against the law as it currently stands.<br/> <br/>An important set of letters documenting men and women's collaborative pursuit of equality. unknown books‎

‎Women Rights Law‎

‎Married Women's right to own buy and sell her separate property is finally granted in the Married Women's Property Act 1882‎

‎Married Women's Property Act 1882. U.K. Robert George Printed Act of Parliament. Unbound and stitched. In fair condition on aged paper. Ownership signature of 'R. G. Underdown' Railway General Manager at head of first page. Passed 18 August 1882. The ten pages of the act are preceded by a two page 'Arrangement of Sections' from '1. Married women to be capable of holding property and of contracting as a feme sole.' to '27. Short title.' A document of considerable historical significance. Scarce: no copies located on COPAC.<br/><br/>The Married Women's Property Act 1882 45 & 46 Vict. c.75 was an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that significantly altered English law regarding the property rights of married women which besides other matters allowed married women to own and control property in their own right. English law defined the role of the wife as a feme covert emphasizing her subordination to her husband. Upon marriage the husband and wife became one person under the law as the property of the wife was surrendered to her husband and her legal identity ceased to exist. Any personal property acquired by the wife during the marriage unless specified that it was for her own separate use went automatically to her husband. Women were often limited in what they could inherit. Males were more likely to receive real property land. The Married Women's Property Act 1882 altered the common law doctrine of coverture to include the wife's right to own buy and sell her separate property.8 Wives' legal identities were also restored as the courts were forced to recognize a husband and a wife as two separate legal entities. unknown books‎

‎Women Sports Alaska‎

‎The Lightning Strikers. Winners of the Ladies Indoor Baseball League Trophy Nome Alaska 1914‎

‎Nome: Lomen Brothers 1914. Silver gelatin print 6 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches. Fine. Women's baseball evolved alongside men's leagues beginning in the 1860s with many teams and leagues appearing throughout the following decades often playing indoors and often unrecorded in the annals of baseball history. Women's baseball was particularly popular in Minnesota and parts of the Midwest in the early part of the twentieth century. This photograph bears evidence as to the game's migration to Alaska Territory where long winters would have been particularly conducive to an indoor league. This photograph by the Nome Alaska firm Lomen Brothers shows the champion team of the Ladies Indoor Baseball League in Nome. We find no record in contemporary newspapers or anywhere else of the league. The Nome Brothers were a well-known photographic firm who migrated from Minnesota to Alaska at the height of the Nome Gold Rush in 1903. By 1909 at the end of the gold rush the population of Nome declined substantially to 2500 from 20000 just a few years earlier. This photograph shows interesting documentation of Nome post-rush and also of the spread of women's sports through migrant populations. We find one other example in the Fred Henton collection at the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center. A fine example. Lomen Brothers unknown‎

‎Ladies Champion Base Ball Club c. 1911‎

‎turn of the century Championship Women's Baseball Team Photo Postcard. "The Western Bloomer Girls-Ladies Champion Base Ball Club-Watervliet Mich." Vintage photo-illustrated postcard of the girls baseball team. No date c. 1911. Eleven uniformed girls pose for a team photograph. 3.5 x 5.5 inches. The Western Bloomer Girls were founded in 1911 by Maud Nelson a renowned pitcher in her own right. "Bloomer Girl" baseball teams of women were formed starting in the 1890s taking their name from Amelia Bloomer who designed loose fitting trousers that women wore while playing sports. Bloomer Girls teams rarely played each other but traveled across America challenging local amateur and minor league men's teams. Bloomer Girls were disciplined sportswomen and frequently won games with their solid skills and competitive spirits. Interestingly these "Boomer Girl" teams were integrated when it came to gender; while most of the players were women each roster had at least one male player. In this image two male players pose in the second row. Verso is blank with space for message and address. Light crease to bottom left corner. In very good condition. unknown books‎

‎Women Baseball Players c. 1910s‎

‎Women baseball players. No date c. 1910s. Vintage Real photo postcard that was never sent. Two women in "Ivanhoe" baseball uniforms. 5.5 x 3.5 in. Figures identified on the verso in handwritten blue ink "Goldie & Irma Wade". The history of women playing the game of baseball dates back to the 19th century. In most cases these early women's baseball teams were considered a novelty act. Permanent teams and leagues were rare but they did exist as evidence by this photograph in which 2 serious ball players pose for the camera. In some rare cases women even played on men's teams; perhaps the case for these two who strangely pose without the rest of their teammates. Minor surface damage with a bit lossof emultion to center of image at knee level. Handling dents. In good to very good condition. unknown books‎

‎Cambridge: Independent Service for Information on the Vienna Youth Festival 1959. First Edition. 12mo 15cm.; publisher's blue printed staplebound card wrappers; 84pp. Wrappers a bit toned else Very Good or better. Having struggled to find work in New York City 25-year-old Gloria Steinem moved to Cambridge in 1959 to assume the position of co-director of the anti-Communist program the Independent Service for Information on the Vienna Youth Festival. The Service masquerading as a private enterprise whose aim was to send democracy- and capitalism-loving American youth to the communist-run Festival was funded by an anonymous donor later revealed to be the CIA though Steinem would have been aware of this from the start. The present pamphlet was issued a month before the Festival began and provides a detailed critique of the quality of Soviet literature: "The trouble with Soviet literature as Ilya Ehrenburg sees it is that Soviet writers say things they do not believe" p. 5.
