First edition of this scarce book titled in English "The Legal Status of Women in the Law of Islam", written by Al-Yafi who was the Prime Minister of Lebanon serving twelve times between 1938 and 1969, and at the forefront of the struggle to give women the right to vote, which he was able to achieve with his cabinet in power in 1952. Abdallah Al-Yafi is the first Arab to receive a PhD from the Sorbonne University, where he wrote his thesis about women's rights in Islam. The thesis subject was "The Legal Status of Women in the Law of Islam" (French: La Condition Privée de la Femme dans le Droit de l'Islam). Drawing from Quranic decrees and Islamic principles, he made a case about how women are supposed to be allotted more rights in society. Al-Yafi believed that the empowerment of women was crucial for building a stronger society, equality providing a steadier base. These thoughts, when expressed in the 1920s, had quite an 'avant-garde' ring to conservative Muslim ears: they were not always welcome with wide open arms or minds. Later on in his political life, Abdallah Al-Yafi's political opponents brandished his thesis as a weapon of defamation to tarnish his reputation. According to them, he was not a "righteous Muslim" but a French minion who had given in to the French authorities-the colonial mandate authority in Lebanon at the time-in blaspheming the Islamic religion in reward of a "Doctorat d'État". These were aimed at ruining the honest image that he so carefully cultivated throughout his life.‎

‎Fertility Transition in Rural South India [Hardcover]‎

‎THIS work reports the socio-economic correlates of the recent fertility decline in the rural areas of south India. After an in-depth discussion of the social and economic structure of the research area the book explores the aspects of differential fertility, effects of changing family structure, and intra-family relationship on fertility and pattern of fertility decision-making. A micro-demographic research methodology was used to undertake this investigation in a cluster of four villages about 65 km. away from Bangalore. A beginning of fertility decline in this area was found running parallel to profound economic and social changes which have occurred especially since independence. Besides an important effect of declining infant and childhood mortality, the fertility decline was a function of material fertility associated with changes in the intrinsic behaviour of individuals. The behaviour changes were due to recent modification in intra-and inter-family relationships-the unilinearly extended family system appears to have given way to a bilateral extended system in which affines (wife’s side relatives) are playing a greater role in decision-making. The young are assuming decision-making responsibilities relatively early and women have progressed to a higher level of participation in the family and fertility decision making. The pattern is that such changes are more frequent in the large heterogeneous villages while the smaller and remote villages are yet to experience these forces of social change. A moderate increase in literacy, an exposure to urban influence and the growing importance of monetization have enabled villagers to think and act more independently than in the past and this has made them more secular. The study is an important reference work for academics and students of demography sociology, family welfare and rural development. Planners and development workers will find invaluable fact and figures to help in their policy-making. About The Author:- Dr. Abusaleh Shariff has been working as an Associate Professor in the Population Research Unit of the Institute for Social and Economic Change, Banglore since 1985. November 1997 in Tijuana, Mexiko) war eine amerikanische Schriftstellerin. Ihr erstes literarisches Werk hieß Black Tarantula. Unter diesem Pseudonym trat Kathy Acker zuweilen auch auf. Sie begeisterte sich für die Arbeiten von William S. Burroughs und für die Ideen und Texte des Antipsychiaters Ronald D. Laing. Kathy Ackers Ruf als Queen of Punk beruhte einerseits auf formalen und inhaltlichen Schwerpunkten ihrer literarischen Arbeit, andererseits aber auch auf der Stilisierung ihrer Person. Die erste Arbeit der Autorin erschien Mitte der 1970er vor dem Hintergrund des damals aufkeimenden literarischen Untergrunds in New York City. Ihre ersten Werke wurden durch ihre eigenen mehrmonatigen Erfahrungen als Stripperin grundlegend beeinflusst. Acker blieb lange an den Rändern des literarischen Establishments und wurde bis Mitte der 1980er Jahre nur von kleinen alternativen Verlagen veröffentlicht, was der Autorin den Ruf einer literarischen Terroristin verlieh. 1984 wurde mit Blood and Guts in High School erstmals eines ihrer Werke im Vereinigten Königreich veröffentlicht. Acker schrieb in der folgenden Zeit eine bemerkenswerte Anzahl von Erzählungen, die fast alle im Verlag Grove Press erschienen. Zum Ende ihres Lebens publizierte Acker auch in klassischen Massenmedien wie zum Beispiel mehrere Artikel in der britischen Zeitung The Guardian, darunter ein Interview mit den Spice Girls, welches wenige Monate vor ihrem Tod erschien. Trotz ihrer ambivalenten Gefühle den akademischen Bildungsinstitutionen gegenüber arbeitete Kathy Acker einige Jahre als Literaturdozentin in San Francisco. ‎Adelaide 1850. Very good condition. A remarkable letter from Adelaide signed "E. Marsh" a recent settler addressed to "Dear Sister" in which the author encourages her sister to emigrate saying "Bring your tools with you by all means." This remarkable letter is written by "Mrs. Marsh" who is herself recorded as a "plasterer" in the South Australian Almanac and Directory Murray 1847 as "Marsh Mrs. E. plasterer Grey st." She encourages her sister and fellow trades person by describing Adelaide's plan to lay city water pipes saying "I would have wrote before for I should like for you to come if you could do well. The Pluming sic trade has not been much here it is better now - I have no doubt but you would do very well here things is getting more like home. I think in about twelve months Pluming will be as good a trade as any other. Their sic is a water company proposed to carry the water all over the town in pipes it will not take place for twelve month at least wages is from 6 to 7 shillings per day." The commencement of colonial Government in South Australia was only declared in December 1836. By 1838 the second Governor Colonel George Gawler arrived in October 1838 "to a situation of almost no public finances underpaid officials and 4000 immigrants still living in makeshift accommodation." Wikipedia By 1843 South Australia was growing a huge amount of wheat. "From a low point in 1842 when 642 out of 1915 houses were abandoned and there was talk of abandoning the settlement Adelaide was a bustling city when Grey left to govern New Zealand in 1845. " Adelaide in fact did not complete its city water supply directed by Colonel Freeling the colonial engineer in charge of the project until about 1860! Residents rejoiced at the life changing improvement and drank from water fountains on the main streets while the city council made a demonstration of the fire hydrants by spraying an office building. The author also offers her sister advice on what to bring on the passage over and detailed news of family members father "poor old man I wish he was here with us" William Sarah "keeping a public house" and Brother John "arrived here in November 1848 they lost one child coming over by the name of Walter" and Sam "living with a spirit merchant". She also promises to send her sister newspapers to show prices and "the state of things here". Bifolium 7 x 9" 4 pages. Written in ink on pale blue paper with circular embossed stamp upper left corner. Period folds flattened. "Marsh Mrs. E. plasterer Grey st." Australia City Directories South Australian Almanac and Directory Murray 1847 on Ancestry.com. Most likely this is now Gray St. parallel to West Terrace in Adelaide.
