In the original printed dustwrapper priced $2.00 on spine panel; gently rubbed and worn with shallow losses at head at foot of spine panel and a small 1/4" chip to rear panel; Very Good. <br /> <br /> Future utopia set in the year 1950 in which the women of the world go on strike against matrimony using abstinence as a lever to take control of world government and eliminate war. The theme of "lysistratic nonaction" i.e. the "sex strike" is a recurring one in Progressive Era utopias appearing for example in George Noyes Miller's The Strike of A Sex 1891; Begum Rokeya's Sultana's Dream 1908 and less directly in Charlotte Perkins Gilman's Herland 1915. In the current iteration written by a Missouri Methodist minister and issued by a religious publishing house the sexual implications of "non-matrimony" are left more or less to the reader's imagination. What the author does not shy away from is the validity and importance of women's recently-won political influence: "Feeling a real humiliation in the messed-up condition of world affairs brought about by my own sex I share the faith expressed by Mrs. J. Borden Harriman.that 'women may yet find some way to lead the race away from self-destruction'.and with Carrie Chapman Catt.that it is 'the task of women to demilitarize the minds of the world'" from the author's Preface. Beneath the Association's name at the head of the first page is a list of the names of the eight members of the 'Executive Committee' followed by the names and addresses of the treasurer and 'Hon. Secretary pro tem.'. The first page carries a four-point 'Constitution' the second page carries eight 'Rules' and the third page a membership form. It would appear reasonable to date the pamphlet from the time of the Association's foundation. Only one copy found on either COPAC or OCLC WorldCat at the London School of Economics. Very Good Turkish Original wrappers. Foolscap 8vo. (17,5 x 12 cm). In Turkish. 128 p., one plate of Fatma Hanim who was the deceased wife of the poet to whom the poem is dedicated. First edition in Latin letters of this second book of poems of "Sâîr-i Âzâm" [i.e. The great poet], which is considered one of the greatest works of Turkish literature, and was published with appendices and a dictionary at the end, along with its transcription by doctor and politician Sadi Irmak (1904-1990). First published in 1885 in Arabic letters, Makber is a poem written by Abdülhak Hamit Tarhan on the loss of his wife, Fatima Hanim. It took its place as one of the most important examples of the newly established Ottoman / Turkish Poetry in Western style in those years, and has been a source of inspiration for many Turkish poets even decades after it was written. It is the first poem that brings the metaphysical fear of death to Turkish poetry. In 1878, his first brush with controversy occurred on the publishing of his play Nesteren in Paris. It depicted a rebellion against a tyrannical ruler, and the actual ruler of Turkey at that time, Sultan Abdul Hamid II was so upset by it that he had the playwright fired from his government job. He was appointed in 1881 to Poti, Georgia, in 1882 to Volos, Greece and in 1883 to Bombay, India. Due to illness of his wife, the family left India in 1885. On their way to Istanbul, his wife Fatma died in Beirut, then in the Ottoman Empire. She was buried there that inspired him to write his poem Makber (The Grave), which later became very popular.

First Beirut Edition and early edition in Arabic literature of this classic novel by Salih, who is one of Sudan's greatest authors of the twentieth century. The story is set in the fictional village of Wad Hamid, the same setting as Salih's famous Season of Migration to the North. It is a comic novella, centering on the unlikely nuptials of the town's eccentric Zein. Tall and odd-looking, with just two teeth in his mouth, Zein has made a reputation for himself as the man who falls in love over and over with girls who promptly marry other men, to the point where mothers seek him out in hopes that he will draw the eye of available suitors to their eligible daughters. "The Wedding of Zein" was made into a drama in Libya and won Kuwaiti filmmaker Khalid Siddiq an award at the Cannes Film Festival in the late 1970s. Some critics identify this novella may be considered part of the tradition of magical realism, although Salih considered it as a socialist realist one. Minor stains on cover and edges. Overall a good copy. Only two paper copies in OCLC in Library University of Amsterdam and Leiden University Library: 71470668. It's also the earliest edition in the OCLC.
