With a doodle decorating her signature Laurencin has been generally regarded as a famous female painter having shown in eleven exhibitions between 1912 and 1939 in major art capitals including Paris London New York and Dusseldorf. She was part of the avant-garde circle of artists and writers that included Appolinaire Picasso and Braque. By the date of our letter she was regarded as a queen of French culture.<br/><br/>Just before the start of World War II Laurencin comments to friends about her travel. "The weather is nice - the window open onto greenery - Nothing to tell - all the Jews go to mass - henceforth it is not the danger which makes them pious since they reign the leaves of the trees disturbed about it make splinters of light." She signs "Marie." She draws decorative curls around her signature. A charmer by the French Cubist one of the small number of important female members of the movement although the artwork in this book has more kinship to Cassatt or Renoir than strict Cubism. No. 207 of 250 limitation. Very scarce with no copies located on OCLC First Search. Squarish 48mo. 101 by 97 mm. Unpaginated 19 color lithograph plates one other b/w plate captions with the names of the subjects on the facing pages and numerous blanks between pages as if this were an actual sketchbook album. Indeed an outstanding aspect of the book is how the artwork can be mistaken for the actual watercolors as opposed to prints of watercolors. The publisher deepens the illusion with captions and the title on the title pastedown written what appears to be a long-hand cursive done in actual pen-and-ink although these too are printed. 17 of the illustrations are of women often girls and there is a dreamy quality to all of them. The three other illustrations are of flowers. Sunning of spine. A few minor paper chips of the decorative paper pastedown both on the binding proper and a bit more so on the slipcase which features the same undulating striped pattern. A considerable shock to those brought up on Tenniel" Tebbel First Black Sun Press edition number 185 of 420 copies of the American issue of which this is one of 350 copies on Rives paper. There were also 50 copies on Japanese Vellum and 20 copies on Hollande van Gelder paper. The American and European issues totalled 790 copies. The Black Sun Press edition of Alice in Wonderland was published in the year following co-founder Harry Crosby's notorious suicide. "Literature's most scandalous couple" Lyle Caresse and Harry Crosby founded the press in the early part of 1924. It closed with Caresse's death in 1970. This was the first illustrated book of the French artist Marie Laurencin 1883-1956 whose celebrated queer illustrations are "characterized by a palette of pastel colours and feminine subject matter" Summers p. 208. Laurencin hosted other famous artists at her home in Auteuil where she "reigned like a queen with her cat whom she said was the model for all her female faces. As she became popular her influence was felt in the world of fashion and interior design" Fine p. 173. Oblong quarto. Inscribed by Marie Laurencin First and limited edition number 515 of 999 copies; this copy inscribed by Marie Laurencin to the poet and dramatist Jean Tardieu at the foot of her illustration on p. 38: "A Jean Tardieu bien sympathiquement Marie Laurencin Janvier 1944". A beautifully produced book particularly so considering wartime conditions. Painter printmaker and stage designer Marie Laurencin 1883-1956 is "known for her delicate portraits of elegant vaguely melancholic women" Britannica. She studied at the Humbert Academy in Paris and after an introduction to Picasso became involved with the avant-garde. Getrude Stein was one of her earliest supporters. She was romantically involved with Apollinaire whose work she here illustrates: a group of poems including "Marie" and "Crépuscule" which is dedicated to her. The recipient Jean Tardieu 1903-1995 published several poetry collections in the 1930s and after the war became a moving force in French radio. A number of his plays were staged and he was linked with the work of the Theatre of the Absurd. "Alone among the playwrights of the avant-garde Tardieu can claim that his work spans the entire gamut of exploration" Esslin p. 227. The publishing house of Pierre Trémois founded in 1922 specialized in illustrated books. The poems for this publication were gathered by Renée Garcia who later co-founded the literary quarterly Cerf-Volant and comprise contributions by among others Mallarmé Jules Laforgue Apollinaire Paul Claudel Jean Cocteau Léon-Paul Fargue Rilke and Paul Valéry. Each poem has an accompanying pochoir frontispiece the illustrators including André Derain Jean Cocteau André Lhote and Hermine David. An online institutional search locates 12 copies worldwide: eight in the US; three in France BnF Bibliothèque Sainte-Genevieve and Bibliothèque Jacques Doucet; Leiden in the Netherlands. Quarto. Paris: Éditions de l'Oiseau Lyre 1939. Limited Edition. Wraps. Envelope of semi-stiff card stock. Cloth slipcase. Very Good Plus. Seven mounted pochoir illustrations by Marie Lauencin intended to illustrate the score by John Blow of his work "Venus and Adonis". Only one of the watercolors was used on the cover of the printed score. This is number VIII of fifty copies not for sale of a total limitation of 350. The pochoir were done in such a manner that they can easily trick even a practiced eye and come off at first blush as original watercolors. The artwork is also quintessential Laurencin with its disarming intentional naivete its soft gentle pastel palette its washes of color with fuzzy boundaries their economy of lines and their overall dreaminess and dream-like effect. The artwork well suits a masque which the opera was labeled as a masque is meant to be fantasy. The pochoirs are each 24.5 by 18.5 cm and they are mounted on light card leaves that are 31 by 25 cm. They are housed in an envelope with the title "Designs by Marie Laurencin" followed by the titles of each of the pochoirs all written as if painted in green with a broad brush. The score itself is a standard 4to musical score measuring 28 by 22.5 cm. 4 95 pp. Blow completed the work around 1682 and it was first performed in 1683 and the work is generally thought of as the first true English language opera. Condition: the score has light to moderate wear with minor foxing on the cover a few early leaves and the fore-edge. The envelope is heavily browned with tears etc. along its bottom edge in particular. There is very occasional light foxing of the artwork leaves with very little touching the artwork itself. With two lithographs by Marie Laurencin in two states; one black and one sanguine. Housed in accompanying slipcase. This is a very good softcover copy in the original publisher's cream colored stiff paper covers, with a color illustration by Mariette Lydis tipped on, and with the clear plastic covers and comb binding intact. Very clean inside, light spotting outside. One photo has some offsetting to the white page opposite, some slight loss of color to the photo.Text in French. This is a program, published by the French magazine, Le Jour. It was issued on the occasion of a ball at the Opera on February 6, 1934. Printed by Draeger Freres, with color drawings by Mariette Lydis, Marie Laurencin, Vertes, Alexieff and Bret Koch among others. Article by Colette on Mariette Lydis. Photographs of movie stars and actresses throughout are printed with a special process, almost like silver or metal sheets. The process is called 'papier metallise'. Stars include Marlene Dietrich, Jean Harlow, Marcelle Chantal, Dolly Davis, among others. One sheet has a textile swatch printed with a light brown woodcut by Guinhald. Advertisements throughout from Paris couture houses, and fashion accessories shops. 10" high X 9" wide. This book will be securely wrapped and packed in a sturdy box and shipped with tracking.
