In de gistkelders brokkelt zijn culturele achtergrond af onder de invloed van een hard en illusieloos bestaan. De strijd om zijn identiteit blijft, ook als hij ontslagen wordt. Geen verzonnen historie maar een wrange getuigenis die invreet als zwavelzuur. Een beklemmend eenzaamheidsgevoel is de rode (zwarte?) draad die door de overige verhalen loopt. Of het nu over een avonturier, een moordenaar of een kansarme stotteraar gaat; telkens weer staan ze oog in oog met hun eigen onvolkomenheid en alleen zijn.‎
