‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 205 p., color and b/w ills. Bare, naked, nude: A story of modernization in Turkish painting.= Üryan, çiplak, nü: Türk resminde bir modernlesme öyküsü. [Exhibition catalogue]. Bare, Naked, Nude: A Story of Modernization in Turkish Painting focuses on the evolution of nude painting as one of the foremost genres alongside portraiture, landscape, and still life in Turkish modern art. The rich diversity of styles represented in the paintings that come together in this exhibition reveal that the nude, far from being a subject for Turkish artists constitutes a means of expression fundamental in the search for form. The most challenging trial for artists in their student years, the human body emerges as a central source of inspiration in both the pursuit for modernist tendencies in Western art and in the efforts to articulate an individual artistic language. The exhibition catalogue, through the essay of the curator, Ahu Antmen and the selected paintings offer us the possibility to envisage the visual adventure behind Turkey's story of modernization, providing an insight into the formation of artistic identity in the period extending from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic, the challenges of transforming the perception of the female body from a framework of privacy to that of a desexualized object and the connections between the art and the nude in the perception of a modern identity. ‎Time present time past. Highlights from 20 years of the International Istanbul Biennial.= Simdiki zaman geçmis zaman: 20 yilda Uluslararasi Istanbul Bienali'nden iz birakanlar. [Exhibition catalogue].‎

‎New New English Paperback. 4to. (29 x 23 cm). In English and Turkish. 372, [1] p., color and b/w ills. Time present time past. Highlights from 20 years of the International Istanbul Biennial.= Simdiki zaman geçmis zaman: 20 yilda Uluslararasi Istanbul Bienai'nden iz birakanlar. [Exhibition catalogue]. While documenting the past evolution of the Istanbul Biennial with a view to exploring its future development and possibilities, "Time Present, Time Past" will also include a number of iconic works by both Turkish and international artists that have partaken in the previous Istanbul Biennials. These works will be accompanied by plasma screen documentation of the works from past Biennials shown in situ. The works in the exhibition will be brought from Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Korea, Scotland, Spain, Sweden and U.S.A. Co-curated by ¿stanbul Modern Director David Elliott and ¿stanbul Modern Chief Curator Rosa Martínez, the exhibition will open concurrently with the 10th Istanbul Biennial, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The exhibition is designed not only to reveal the ways in which the rapid changes that have taken place in the art world over the past years have been reflected in the Istanbul art scene, but also to show how a generation of young Turkish artists has become integrated within a broader international framework. Twenty years have passed since the Istanbul Biennial first started in 1987. In the early Biennials, works of art selected from across the world were displayed in various parts of the city, including historic areas, museums and cultural sites. Subsequent biennials maintained this approach and extended to "non-art" areas and public spaces. In this process, a wide spectrum of the best in Turkish and global contemporary art was introduced to Turkey and the rest of the world. In putting together "Time Present, Time Past," ¿stanbul Modern asked the eight former Artistic Directors of the Biennial (Beral Madra, Vas¿f Kortun, René Block, Rosa Martínez, Paolo Colombo, Yuko Hasegawa, Dan Cameron, Charles Esche)¿ all well-known international curators in their own right - to select what they felt were the most inspiring and iconic works from the biennials they had organized. Originating from the U.S.A., Germany, Scotland, Spain, Italy, Japan, and Turkey, these curators have assembled a kaleidoscopic vision of the work of many key artists who have left their mark on contemporary culture and art. The exhibition will reflect the transformation of the art scene in Istanbul and the role of the past Biennials within this change, with each curator writing an article for the exhibition catalogue about their experiences of the city, the Biennial they curated and their perspectives on the future. To accompany the exhibition, an extensive illustrated catalogue that examines the evolution of the Biennial over the past twenty years, and gives the views and perspectives of its Artistic Directors from the past to present, will be published. "The Future of Biennials": An International Symposium. In connection with the Opening of the 10th Istanbul Biennial on 6th September and in co-ordination with them, ¿stanbul Modern will organize an international symposium on the 7th and 8th of September 2007. The symposium will be held at the Mimar Sinan University Auditorium in collaboration with AICA Turkey. Sponsored by Garanti Bank, the symposium will be in English with simultaneous translation into Turkish. The symposium will include the previous artistic directors of the past Biennials, as well as Hou Hanru, the artistic director of the 10th Istanbul Biennial, and some of the artists participating in the exhibition. The past, present and future of the Biennials in general and Istanbul Biennial in particular will be discussed from various aspects and a Q and A session will be held for the audience. Moderated by ¿stanbul Modern Director David Elliott, the symposium speakers will include Selim Birsel, René Block, Dan Ca‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. [vi], 174 p., color and b/w ills. This is not alove song: Video art and pop music crossovers.= Bu bir ask sarkisi degil: Video sanati ve pop müzik iliskisi. [Exhibition catalogue]. "This is Not a Love Song: Video Art and Pop Music Crossovers" exhibition catalogue traces the genealogy of the relations between video art and pop music from the 1960s to today in which video art and pop music crossed roads. The catalogue features a substantial essay on video art and pop music relationship by curator F. Javier Panera Cuevas. The five chapters in the catalogue Art in Pop, Pop in Art, Hysteria and Religion, 'Non-Musicians' vs 'Non-Artists' Rock and Conceptual Art, Rock and Its Double: Pop Music as a 'Toolbox' and Dance Music Politics present a deeper look into the works in the exhibition. This is Not a Love Song suggests that the relations between music and the visual arts force us to reconsider another history of art, in which musicians and artists can position themselves either as actors in the hegemonic cultural system or as critical radicals whose traces, as Greil Marcus would say, can be as intense and as short-lived 'as a lipstick stain that is removed but leaves a profound imprint on our memory. ‎New English Original bdg. HC. Large 8vo. (20 x 20 cm). In English and Turkish. 192 p., 540 numerous color ills. Arter is hosting Ali Kazma's solo exhibition "timemaker" between 30 January and 5 April. The exhibition features 22 videos selected from the works Ali Kazma has been producing since 2005. "timemaker" brings together selected works from two ongoing series, "Obstructions" and "Resistance," with several other works, making it the artist's most extensive solo exhibition to date. The majority of the works in the exhibition are shown in Turkey for the first time. "Clock Master" (2006), the opening piece of "timemaker", is one of the earlier videos of the "Obstructions" series which Ali Kazma began producing in 2005. In this series, which as of now comprises 18 pieces, the artist carries out research into the tense equilibrium between order and chaos, life and death. The title of the series refers to the fundamental scientific truth that everything must eventually disintegrate and perish, pointing to the sum of production and repair activities as the individual's endless effort to fight this inevitable process of timemaker also features a wide selection from the series "Resistance". In this series, Ali Kazma explores the interventions and strategies that both release the body from its own restrictions and restrict it in order to control it. Works from the "Resistance" series are shown at Arter in a similar fashion to their installation at the Arsenale building in Venice -with a spatial organization that allows a dialogue between them annihilation -and ultimately death-in order to at least slow down and delay this process. Alongside the videos from the "Obstructions" and "Resistance" series, the exhibition features other works including "Today", "Absence", "Past", "Written", "Clerk", and the limited edition book "Recto Verso". The exhibition traces the notion of time in the works installed, and in the dialogue between them in relation to Kazma's own production process.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In French and Turkish. 127 p., color ills. "Modernity? Perspectives from France and Turkey" explores the effects of modernity on contemporary art. Sponsored by the Comité Colbert, the show focuses on how artists have come to a reckoning with the phenomenon of modernity, a concept that is still valid today. In a globalized world, we are going through a period of diverse, profound, and complex relationships in which the use of new technology and social media are forming intricate structures. Istanbul Modern's exhibition attempts to reveal how the remnants of modernity have seeped into our lives. While the show creates an opportunity for comparing approaches of artists to modernity and assessing similar and different points, its aesthetic approach enables us to establish new proposals for social readings and utopias. Of course, it is also true that France was one of the crucial role models in Turkey's modernization project. Curated by Celenk Bafra and Levent Calikoglu, the show features 17 works from 11 different French and Turkish artists, including Nevin Aladag, Fikret Atay, Kader Attia, Ayse Erkmen, Cyprien Gaillard, Thomas Hirschhorn, Pierre Huyghe, Chris Marker, Sarkis, Hale Tenger and Nasan Tur. The dynamics of modern life have been both criticized and considered an endless opportunity for inquiry in the visual arts.‎

‎Plurivocality: Visual arts and music in Turkey.= Çok sesli: Türkiye'de görsel sanatlar ve müzik. Edited by N. Can Kantarci. [Exhibition catalogue]. 27 Haziran - 27 Kasim 2014.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 178 p., color and b/w ills. Within the scope of its 10th year, Istanbul Modern presents "Plurivocality", an exhibition investigating the interrelations between auditory and visual arts through a selection of contemporary artwork in Turkey. Exploring the close bond the visual arts have established with sound and music from past to present, "Plurivocality" reveals the special personal and social roles music plays in artistic processes. The exhibition features current works by artists that treat the visual and the auditory not as distinct disciplines, but rather as two fields that work in tandem. The paintings, sculptures, videos, and installations in the exhibition render sound and music visually as a theme, concept, or issue, using different forms of music and sound as metaphors and means of expression. The exhibition also serves as a source for understanding the cultural and sociopolitical role sound and music play in Turkey and how various music trends have influenced visual art practices. A research area at the entrance of the exhibition hall, "Repertoire" explores the intersections between music and the visual arts in Turkey as well as past collaborations between actors in the two fields. "Repertoire" is an initiative that examines Turkey's sociocultural history from the late Ottoman era to the 1980s via its reflections in the visual arts and music.‎

[Exhibition catalogue]. Edited by Begüm Akkoyunlu Ersöz, Tania Bahar. Francisco de Goya (1746-1828), known as one of the most unique artists of European painting and a pioneer of modern painting, was introduced to the Turkish audience for the first time with four series of engravings, along with a selection of oil paintings, at the Pera Museum in 2012. Curated by Marisa Oropesa, the exhibition consisted of works from Spain and Italy's leading museums and private collections. As one of the best narrators of darkness, the exhibition united Goya's various oil paintings and engraving series-Caprichos, Disasters of War, Tauromaquia, Proverbs or Follies- that bear witness to a turbulent period in Spain and Europe. The works in the catalogue, besides his career as a court painter and portraitist, explore Goya's extraordinary imagination, along with his reflections of the social circumstances of the era, from a critical perspective. The catalogue seeks to shed light upon Goya's extraordinary imagination with his realistic and at times frightening style that makes him one of the best narrators of darkness separating him from his contemporaries, as his art transcends time, influencing 20th century modernism.‎

The exhibition shows the Russian avant-garde artists that in the early 1900s tried to introduce art as a lifechanging power, the ground-breaking work of the artists in this period where the reformist atmosphere had been brought about by the October Revolution in 1917, and the social design they tried to put into practice supported by the new regime and also the wide boundaries of the future they dreamed of. The exciting technological developments and industrialisation that occurred in the early 20th century turned the avant-garde artists towards science and overcoming the boundaries of the earth, dreams of space reflected the beliefs the artists had in the future and tihs is very vividly reflected in the works displayed in this exhibition.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (28 x 23,5 cm). In English and Turkish. 156, [7] p., color ills. Till it's gone: An exhibition on nature and sustainability.= Yok olmadan: Doga ve sürdürülebilirlik üzerine bir sergi.= Till it's gone: An exhibition on nature and sustainability. [Exhibition catalogue]. "TILL IT'S GONE" presents a selection of artists who undertake conceptual research on nature and focus on ecological issues in their artistic practices. The artists are from various generations and have intricate relationships with the concept of sustainability; they bring to bear diverse interpretations and insights pertaining to the interaction between human beings and the ecosystem. The exhibition features paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs, and moving images by twenty artists and art collectives from Turkey and other geographies. Istanbul Modern launches the preliminary program of the exhibition on December 23, 2015, with Yoko Ono's large-scale installation "Ex It", which Ono describes as "life as a continuation". The catalogue includes images and texts about the artists and artworks in "TILL IT'S GONE" and three new essays proffering different perspectives on the premises of the show: following the conceptual framework of the exhibition by Celenk Bafra and Paolo Colombo, the author, educator, and environmentalist Richard Heinberg of the Post Carbon Institute asks-and answers-the question of "why sustainability?", and the art historian Dr. Roger Cook explores the relationship of nature and art in the context of the works in the exhibition in his article titled "Good Air My Friend: Art for the Anthropocene.‎

‎Artists in their time.= Sanatçi ve zamani. [Exhibition catalogue]. Edited by N. Can Kantarci. Prep. by Levent Çalikoglu.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 315, [5] p., color and b/w ills. Artists in their time.= Sanatçi ve zamani. [Exhibition catalogue]. Edited by N. Can Kantarci. Prep. by Levent Çalikoglu. Istanbul Modern's collection exhibition, "Artists in Their Time", focuses on how artists position their work and themselves within the concept of time. It suggests a conceptual field for examining, and reconciling, the links between an artist's time and societal, cultural, natural and universal time. It unites artists from very different periods, geographies and disciplines around common themes. "Artists in Their Time" takes as its starting point the words of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar (1901-1962), one of Turkey's foremost intellectual and literary figures: "I am neither within time nor completely outside of it." Tanpinar's views about time illuminate the process by which artists come to terms with the relationship of their work with the past, the present and the future. Accordingly, this exhibition groups together works of art from distinct geographies, periods and disciplines that share the same emotions with respect to a variety of themes: the intersecting responses of abstract art from different periods; the role of materials and studios in the production of art; the transformation from landscapes and still lifes to the present conception of nature; the search for identity; attraction to the Higher and the spiritual; existential questioning; body politics; feminist approaches; the complex problems imposed by the new urban culture; the struggle against war, death and destruction; life stories from Istanbul, a metropolis defined by water and embracing the sea; and efforts to understand the people of Anatolia.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 133 p., color ills. Guests: Artists and craftspeople.= Misafirler: Sanatçilar ve zanaatkârlar. Edited by N. Can Kantarci. Opening on February 26, the exhibition "Guests: Artists and Craftspeople" is the first exhibition to be organized within the scope of Istanbul Modern's International Artist Residency Program. The project will contribute greatly to the promotion of Turkey abroad and is supported by the Innovative and Creative Istanbul Financial Support Program of the Istanbul Development Agency (ISTKA). In a first for Turkey, the program is arranging for artists from all over the world to collaborate with craftspeople in Istanbul under the auspices of a museum. "Guests: Artists and Craftspeople", the first exhibition of Istanbul Modern's International Artist Residency Program, will be open to the art-loving public from 26 February onwards. The exhibition invites viewers to think about Istanbul's centuries-old craft heritage through contemporary lens. The exhibition's press conference was attended by Oya Eczacibasi, Chair of the Board of Istanbul Modern, Dr. Fatih Piskin, Deputy General Secretary of the Istanbul Development Agency (ISTKA), exhibition curators Öykü Özsoy and Ümit Mesci, and participating artists and craftspeople. With the aim of enhancing the global visibility of Istanbul, the program has invited artists to collaborate with masters in a variety of traditional crafts ranging from wood carving and carpet weaving to metal spinning and quilt making. "Guests: Artists and Craftspeople" features the works of 10 international artists who have been inspired by the crafts of Istanbul. From Baku to London, Mexico City to Copenhagen: Participating artists focus on the themes of craft and tradition in their production processes or work with different materials and techniques. They have also participated in international biennials and exhibitions and their works are featured in the collections of leading museums and art institutions worldwide. The participating artists are: Faig Ahmed (Baku), Rana Begum (London), Benji Boyadgian (Jerusalem), Rodrigo Hernández (Mexico City), Servet Koçyigit (Amsterdam), Outi Pieski (Utsjoki and Numminen), Randi & Katrine (Copenhagen), Wael Shawky (Alexandria and Philadelphia), and Jorinde Voigt (Berlin). In addition to the new works created by reinterpreting traditional production techniques from a contemporary perspective, the exhibition showcases the artists' research and production processes in Istanbul, the resources in the city that inspired them and with which they interacted, as well as information about the craftspeople they worked with. Inviting the viewer to think about Istanbul's long-established craft heritage, the exhibition also includes historical objects that shed light on the cultural richness of Istanbul. These were borrowed from the Harbiye Military Museum and the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's Libraries and Museums Directorate. Curated by Öykü Özsoy and Ümit Mesci of Istanbul Modern's Curatorial Staff, the exhibition "Guests: Artists and Craftspeople" will be on view until August 23. (Ist. Modern Museum).‎
