First edition of this humorous and entertaining work by the Brothers Mayhew together with a nicely executed Fore-edge painting in a fine binding. Caerphilly Castle was built by the Norman Gilbert de Clare in the 13th century as part of his campaign to conquer Glamorgan which resulted in extensive fighting for generations and the most elaborate water defenses in all of Britain. With a fine fore-edge painting under the gilt showing "Christchurch in Hampshire here James Fordyce lived." With an early typed note relating to the painting. The artist possibly copied the engraving "Christchurch Hampshire" from the print by E. Finden after a picture by W. Westall published in Great Britain Illustrated 1830. This view shows the single row boat in the foreground similar to the image with this fore-edge painting. Artist unknown; painted ca. 1900-1955. This scene is delicately and skillfully painted. "Fordyce's delivery and gestures were studied and he drew crowds to Monkwell Street. His topics were didactic but he also satisfied cultured tastes and dealt with the ethics of actual life. David Garrick was impressed; Fordyce associated with Samuel Johnson and introduced him to Blair. Student's prize for George Rodney Scott d. March 3 1929 at Winchester College July 8 1866. later a Fellow of Merton College; bookplate of Bernardine Murphy. Very good. With a fore-edge painting by the "Dover" artist "Ponte Rotti Rome." With the title hand-written by the artist. Painted ca.1920-30s. Fore-edge painting of "Rotti Bridge Rome." The "Ponte Rotto" was drawn by J.D. Harding and engraved by Edward Francis Finden ca.1834 and the fore-edge artist has used this view to apply to the edge of Clinton's Chronology of Rome. The provenance suggests that Scott was the owner through 1929 and on his death it may have found its way to Marks & Co. perhaps by scouting or by auction. From that date it is consistent with other pieces also painted by the 'Dover' painter though this tends to support the point that the earliest date this book could have received a fore-edge painting would have been in 1929. <br /><br /> PROVENANCE: Bookplate of Bernadine Murphy Donahue 1904-1968 a prominent California Catholic philanthropist who married Daniel Donahue in 1954 and established the Daniel Murphy Foundation in 1957 in memory of her father to promote Roman Catholic causes. "So helpful to the Church was the foundation that Pope John XXIII conferred on Bernardine the title of 'Papal Countess' the only title given to an American during his pontificate. Several years later Pope Paul VI conferred on Daniel the title 'Gentleman of His Holiness' the highest award bestowed on a layman in the Church and the first such Award ever given to an American. The important aspect of this provenance is that within it is a proof that this book was painted on before July 1962. Bill Easton ca.1916-1996 paleontologist was a professor of geological sciences at USC specializing in fossil corals. Heavily gilt tooled compartments and spine head and tail. Gilt rolls to edge corners. Gilt fillets to turn-ins. All edges gilt. With the crimson morocco bookplate of Christ's Church - Middlesex dated 1825. Housed in an early twentieth century red cloth slipcase. With a splendid early twentieth century fore-edge painting by an unknown hand depicting Folly Bridge and Bacon's Tower at Oxford. Folly Bridge is a stone bridge over the River Thames carrying the Abingdon Road south from the center of Oxford England. It was erected 1825-27 to designs of a little-known architect Ebenezer Perry died 1850 who practiced in London. The bridge is in two parts separated by an island. They resided in Los Angeles at one time buying the mansion of Earle C. Anthony the founder of KABC. That mansion was donated to the Immaculate Heart Sisters in 1971 upon the death of the Countess. The couple established the Daniel Murphy Foundation in 1957 in memory of Bernardine's father to promote important Roman Catholic and other philanthropic causes. Mrs. Donohue is entombed next to Cardinal James Francis McIntyre. With a glorious fore-edge painting on the painted edge by the Dover painter of "King's College Chapel Cambridge" and labeled in the artist's ink hand. The artist is known to have worked in the 1920s and 1930s in London thus it is interesting to note that there are two notations with dates: a dated inscription in the back E.H.W. 25/3/31 March 25 1931 $ 85. - with a cost code showing B/-/- over B/H/E. Surely an indication that this was painted by March 1931 and offered for sale by an American bookseller for $ 85. The label shown for the painting also has a code: 116/1/24 which looks like a code/date - if a date then the year would be 1924. This is very much within this artist's time period of activity. The old Castle at St. Angelo is referenced on p.300: "This imitation of Egyptian deformity must not be supposed to apply to the mausoleum of Hadrian but to the monstrous divinities and the fabrics of the Tiburtine villa. The Mole was constructed it is thought on the plan nearly of the Mausoleum of Augustus or Cecilia Metella." Aikin. A classic scene often depicted on fore-edge paintings. <br /><br /> Provenance: Martin Mitau 1900–1973 and Marjorie nee Fleishhacker Mitau 1906–1983 were both San Franciscans and lived in the Bay Area all their lives. Bound ca. 1901 in full green morocco covers elaborately bordered in gilt spine with five raised bands decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments gilt board edges and turn-ins marbled end-papers all edges gilt. Spine very slightly sunned otherwise fine. With a later fore-edge painting beneath the gilt showing Westminster Abbey. Arthur Penrhyn Stanley 1815-1881 was an English churchman Dean of Westminster known as Dean Stanley. His position was that of a Broad Churchman and he was the author of works on Church History. Stanley was a candidate to succeed as Archbishop of Dublin following the death of Richard Whately in October 1863 but was rejected by the Church of Ireland. Richard Chenevix Trench the Dean of Westminster was appointed instead and towards the close of 1863 Stanley was appointed by the Crown to the newly vacated deanery. In December he married Lady Augusta Bruce sister of Lord Elgin then governor-general of India. His tenure of the deanery of Westminster was memorable in many ways. He recognized from the first two important disqualifications - his indifference to music and his slight knowledge of architecture. On both these subjects he availed himself largely of the aid of others and threw himself with characteristic energy and entire success into the task of rescuing from neglect and preserving from decay the treasure of historic monuments in which Westminster Abbey is so rich. "The case for Philip Francis first proposed by John Taylor in 1816 has established itself as by far the most probable though categorical proof is still not forthcoming" DNB. The Letters of Junius were the official letters that Junius collected refined and published in 1772. Recto of front free endpaper with the heavily gilt morocco bookplate of Lucy Smith Battson; verso with neat inked inscription in a 19th century hand: "Ely Cathedral / Cambridge." Rear free endpaper with the ticket of Los Angeles department store J. W. Robinson Co. Inoffensive soiling to covers light offsetting in the bed of the text but the binding lustrous and with only trivial wear and clean and fresh internally--a very pretty book in pleasing condition. This is an attractive binding highlighted by a colorful and animated fore-edge painting depicting Ely Cathedral in Cambridgeshire. The painting is finely composed richly detailed and skillfully executed. The cathedral is framed by a verdant landscape in the foreground featuring a small herd of stout cows at left two male figures at center trodding a path toward the cathedral and a horse-drawn cart with driver and aide travelling the same path away from Ely. Two well-dressed young women at right gaze at the Medieval church and the tableau is flanked by a copses of trees the whole beneath a late afternoon deep azure sky with billowing clouds. It is unusual to see so many figures and such activity within a fore-edge tableau particularly this well defined--the detail in the architecture and especially the trees is particularly impressive. The artist is clearly the so-called "Dover Painter" the name given by Jeff Weber to the artist who produced very high quality painted fore edges in the 1920s and 1930s. He did work for the famous London bookseller Marks & Company for Dawson's Bookshop in Los Angeles and for J. W. Robinson Company the Los Angeles department store. Estelle Doheny 1875-1958 whose library comprised one of the great collections of the 20th century bought actively from Dawson's and Weber estimates that approximately half of the very considerable number of especially fine fore-edge paintings in the Doheny collection in Camarillo California were done by the Dover Painter. An important book and art collector this book's prior owner Lucy Smith Doheny Battson 1893-1993 was Estelle's daughter-in-law. Written by the lawyer and lay theologian Erskine 1788-1870 at a time of spiritual doubt these "Remarks" argue the truth of Christianity based on the moral and spiritual needs of mankind. Reflecting a moderate Calvinism the book was the first of a half dozen works through which our author exerted considerable influence in the world of 19th century British theology. Front joint and hinge and upper corners repaired with some though not consummate skill. WITH AN IMPRESSIVE FORE-EDGE PAINTING OF EDINBURGH. With engraved frontispiece one tailpiece vignette and 48 plates etched by James Fittler from drawings by John Claude Nattes. Front pastedown with two bookplates of the important Pittsburgh insurance executive William McGill Duff 1878-1949 and a card inscribed to him from Edward A. Woods dated 22 Dec. 1925. Title signed and dated 1820 on upper margin by original owner Hugh Booth. Avery Library p. 339. Rear joint with five-inch crack at head though the board still firmly attached the binding with significant wear and soiling variable never severe offsetting from images to text leaves a few plates with light foxing to margins other minor defects; obviously with condition issues but the volume redeemed by its very unusual well-preserved and quite pleasing fore-edge painting. Even with its warts and freckles this is a volume of particular appeal first for its topographical content and especially for its memorably vast painting. The scene on the fore edge is a very skillfully painted view of Edinburgh looking south from Craigleith the composition being especially remarkable because of the sweeping impression of the location that it communicates. This results of course because of the extraordinary width of the fore-edge space allotted to the artist: at 16 1/2 inches 430 mm. from end to end this is the broadest fore-edge painting we've ever seen. The painting also has considerable depth with two herders and their cows in the right foreground outcroppings of rock for which Craigleith is famous in the left foreground and Edinburgh far in the distance its commanding castle seeming to touch the sky many miles away. Given the colors used copper orange in the trees for example the puffy treatment of the clouds and the dabbing style with which the paint has been applied this is almost certainly the work of the so-called "Dover Painter" who is described at length in the previous item. Our view is based upon Thomas H. Shepherd's drawing "Edinburgh from Craigleith" engraved by W. Tombleson which originally appeared in John Britton's 1829 "Modern Athens." Initially published in 1804 Fittler's work is an illustrated celebration of Scotland's most interesting antiquities castles towns and picturesque scenery with scenes being drawn using a wide impressionistic pen. Bryan notes that Fittler 1758-1835 "entered the schools of the Royal Academy in 1778 and was elected an Associate Engraver in 1800. He distinguished himself by numerous works after English and foreign masters of different subjects and character; and book illustrations by him abound." This is a decorative binding highlighted by an atmospheric fore-edge scene of Dover Castle painted by a skilled artist. The view depicts a cottage along a country road in the foreground with Dover Castle looming in the background against a hazy sky; a small figure presumably the cottage owner stands right of center. The scene is well designed with the eye moving from the cottage and castle towers at left toward the sea at the far right the foreground landscape's more saturated color anchoring the composition. Of particular note is how this foregound contrasted with the background's washed color creates the illusion of perspective. Despite the light browns and greens at the bottom of the scene the painting is essentially gray and particularly tranquil as a result. The skill of the painter here is seen most notably in his delicate and subtle shading a challenge that defeats even very able practitioners of the fore-edge painting. As always the dating of the painting is difficult but we think that it was done much closer to the time of publication than to the present day. Our author the Rev. Robert Stevens was a celebrated speaker who ultimately rose to become the head of the chapter of canons at Rochester Cathedral. Printed for John Booth unknown

A rare little work no copies on the internet with a sweet fore edge painting. Sir Thomas Moore 1779-1852 is the author of "Lalla Rookh" and "Irish melodies" and the song "Last rose of summer". The book itself is worthwhile; with its unique fore edge painting depicting a jolly golf scene it is a real treasure. A very fine unique copy. hardcover

Very good. With a DOUBLE FORE-EDGE PAINTING showing a "View of York" and a "View of Halifax." Although this fine book was printed for Edwards of Halifax with scene was painted by an unknown artist who was very active circa 1948-50.
