Original bust oil portrait 11-1/2" x 14". The canvas is mounted to a 1/2" thick piece of wood held with small nails along the fore-edges. Framed in a later dark brown recessed molded wood frame behind a burnt orange velvet mat with oval opening measuring approximately 9-1/2" x 12". The painting's surface has some usual age cracks and crackling patterns some very small spots where paint has rubbed off along the line of the oval beneath the matting. Very Good. We can identify neither the subject nor artist. Her dress is of high quality possibly of European design with an empire waist sleeves with large puffs at the top which sit off the shoulders the top line of the dress being a bit demure and cut above the cleavage and nearly straight across with lace trimmed netting leading up to the neckline and ending in a collar. A brooch is placed at the center where the dress material and netting meet. This type of apparel was popular during the early to mid-1800s. unknown

"The Scene from the following Poem is laid chiefly in the vicinity of Loch-Katrine in the Western Highlands of Perthshire. The time of Action includes Six Days and the transactions of each day occupy a Canto." These two volumes were sold in 1965 by Dawson's Book Shop in Los Angeles Catalog 355 item 113. Craigmillar Castle is a ruined medieval castle in Edinburgh Scotland. It is three miles 4.8�km south-east of the city center on a low hill to the south of the modern suburb of Craigmillar. The Preston family of Craigmillar the local feudal barons began building the castle in the late 14th century and building works continued through the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1660 the castle was sold to Sir John Gilmour Lord President of the Court of Session who made further alterations. The Gilmours left Craigmillar in the 18th century and the castle fell into ruin. It is now in the care of Historic Environment Scotland as a scheduled monument. Craigmillar Castle is best known for its association with Mary Queen of Scots. Following an illness after the birth of her son the future James VI Mary arrived at Craigmillar on 20 November 1566 to convalesce. Before she left on 7 December 1566 a pact known as the "Craigmillar Bond" was made with or without her knowledge to dispose of her husband Henry Stuart Lord Darnley. Craigmillar is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Scotland. The central tower house or keep is surrounded by a 15th-century courtyard wall with "particularly fine" defensive features. Within this are additional ranges and the whole is enclosed by an outer courtyard wall containing a chapel and a doocot Loch Leven Castle is a ruined castle on an island in Loch Leven in the Perth and Kinross local authority area of Scotland. Possibly built around 1300 the castle was the location of military action during the Wars of Scottish Independence 1296-1357. In the latter part of the 14th century the castle was granted by his uncle to William Douglas 1st Earl of Douglas and remained in the Douglases' hands for the next 300 years. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here in 1567-68 and forced to abdicate as queen before escaping with the help of her gaoler's family. In 1588 the Queen's gaoler inherited the title Earl of Morton and moved away from the castle. It was bought in 1675 by Sir William Bruce who used the castle as a focal point in his garden; it was never again used as a residence. <br/><br/> Edinburgh: Printed for Arch. 12 ll.Album of 12 rare Indian Patna kalam also called Company school miniature paintings in gouache in this case on mica made in southern India around 1800 for the European market depicting different modes of transportation for high ranked persons.Patna kalam Indian miniatures mix of European and Indian particularly Mogul styles and originated through the presence of the East India Companies and their influence on native traditions in 19th-century India hence the name "Company" school. They were made by Indian artists mostly for European customers and as a result brought together European taste and Indian artistic tradition. The subject matter of Company school paintings was mostly taken from everyday life with an emphasis on the culturally complex social classification of Indian society the caste system as is the case in the present 12 miniatures which depict various modes of transportation for high-ranked persons. 4 depict palanquins 1 a military messenger riding a camel 2 high ranked persons riding an elephant 1 a man on horse-back and 3 chariots.The present series is similar to one in the McLean Museum and Art Gallery 1976.25.1-15.Mica is a brittle substance so such miniatures are rarely found in good condition. The present series inevitably has a few cracks in the paint of most miniatures 2 have small cracks in the mica and 2 have a large tear in the margin of the paper support. PAINTING SHIPS NORTHWEST PASSAGE.
The ships Erebus and Terror in the Arctic. England ca. 1850. Oil painting on canvas 65.5 x 91 cm showing 2 ships in a rough sea amid dangerous rocks and ice. Later mounted on another canvas and stretched over a wooden frame with a handwritten note about the painting pasted on the back.
A mid-19th-century oil painting depicting two ships 3-masted barks in a rough sea amid dangerous rocky and icy cliffs mountains and outcroppings. Pasted to the back is an old slip of paper with a note the parts of the text in parentheses are lost but have been filled in based on an earlier transcription: "The sailing ships 'Erebus' and 'Terror' passing through the Davis Straight in 1846 the 6 later "corrected" to 7. It was on this expedition that Sir John Franklin discovered the North West Passage and in which he lost his life". In fact Franklin sailed these two ships through Davis Strait in 1845 passed on through Lancaster Sound in search of a Northwest Passage and spent the winter on Beechey Island. In 1846 he and his expedition made their way through using the modern names Peel Sound and Franklin Strait into McClintock Channel where they got caught in the ice near King William Island. Most of the crew died there including Franklin in 1847. A few made it on foot to the mainland but were unable to reach any outpost. The last died in 1848. Since no one who saw the ships in these waters survived the anonymous artist who made the present painting appears to have turned to an 1847 painting of the same ships by John Wilson Carmichael in London though he did not copy it. Carmichael had earlier made a drawing of an expedition in search of the Northwest Passage by William Edward Parry who made three expeditions in the years 1819 to 1825 each with two ships but in 1847 he used parts of his existing Arctic scene as models for the composition of a new painting showing an Antarctic scene of James Clark Ross's voyage with the ships Erebus and Terror in 1842: "'Erebus' and 'Terror' in the Antarctic". Carmichael's drawing and painting survive at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. The central ship in the present painting follows that in Carmichael's painting quite closely and the second ship more distantly. The rocks and ice are similar in general appearance and arrangement but quite different in detail.With some restorations along the edges of the painting and a small scuffmark near the foot toward the left but generally in good condition.l Cf. Oval miniature portrait painting of the acclaimed French Enlightenment author Voltaire 1694-1778 showing him in one of his favourite poses: sitting with a book in his hand in front of a bookcase. The portrait has a dated signature on the back "J. de Cerf Anno 1687" seven years before Voltaire was born! A modern note on the back suggests that the artist is the obscure painter Louis Le Cerf who worked in Grenoble around 1735. The portrait itself is in very good condition but the frame has lost most of its gilding. unknown

Painting of a souk in Cairo by the German orientalist Carl Wuttke 1849-1927. Paintings such as these were made to be reproduced as picture postcards an archetypal consumer product from the early 20th century. Postcards as a convenient alternative to the letter had first appeared in the 1870s. The simultaneous improvements in photographic and printing techniques led to the introduction of full-colour postcards in the 1890s. Although photographs were used as a basis for the creation of half-tone blocks which were then used to print the postcards well-made paintings such as these by Wuttke were just as popular. For the numerous visitors to Egypt picture postcards were a way of "collecting" the visited sights thereby documenting their travels.Carl Wuttke was one of the most well-travelled artists of his time visiting Italy North-Africa the United states China and Japan. During his travels he painted various views in Egypt and China for the Dresden firm of Römmler & Jonas that were subsequently reproduced as picture postcards. Wuttke's quick style reminiscent of contemporary impressionism but also of traditional oil sketches was well suited to that end giving an even better suggestion of a "snapshot" than contemporary photography.Relined at the back and numbered on the relining "94". Colourful panel painting by the leading orientalist painter Henri-Émilien Rousseau of a mounted Bedouin falconer one of Rousseau's favourite subjects. While the sport of falconry was an important status symbol in the Middle East and Europe generally for the Bedouins it was a means of survival.Rousseau 1875-1933 was a Cairo-born French painter who divided his childhood between North Africa and France where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under the great Orientalist painter Jean-Léon Gérôme. He broke from the style of his master however and started to paint in a more impressionistic style. Between 1920 and 1930 he travelled extensively through the Rif and Atlas mountains of Morocco where he befriended the chiefs of several nomad tribes. It was probably here that Rousseau fell under the spell of the Bedouin horsemen which came to characterize his compositions. In 1927 more than 80 of his works from this period were displayed at the gallery of the influential Parisian art dealer Georges Petit. This was followed by an exhibition at the Exposition Universelle of 1931.The panel is cracked in the length leading to a 4 cm crack in the paint to the right of the rider's head a 1 cm crack below the horse's left hind hoof and a 7 cm crack from the top left to the horse's head but these cracks are only noticeable on close inspection and no paint has been lost. Some minor craquelure in the dark red patch connecting the rider and the saddle. Otherwise a well-executed and clean painting.l For the artist: Thieme & Becker XXIX p. 113. unknown

In an ebonized wooden frame and gilt inner frame 24 x 27.5 cm.
An oil painting on brass showing Jamestown on the island Saint Helena with its houses fortress governor's residence and Church of St James and with two ships and a boat in the bay before the city. Although the painting is unsigned and undated it clearly matches the 4 June 1806 print published by Edward Orme in London which was engraved by John Heaveside Clarke & J.R. Hamble after George Hutchins Bellasis 1788-1822. The interest in Saint Helena rose enormously when Napoleon was imprisoned there in 1815 so that is the most likely time for someone to have copied the 1806 print. Bellasis took a commission in the British army at Bombay where his father was commander of the forces. Illness forced him to leave Bombay for home in 1804 but his condition worsened underway and he had to disembark at Saint Helena on 4 November 1804 and remain there eight months to recover before returning home. Bellasis was an amateur artist and when he recovered sufficiently presumably in the new year he made a series of views of the spectacular island almost 2000 kilometres from the nearest land. The print made from Bellasis's view of Jamestown published on 4 June 1806 only months after he returned to England is so close to the present painting that one must have copied the other. It seems most likely that the painting is a direct copy of the print. In very good condition with only a few minor surface scratches in the varnish. A lovely painting of Saint Helena on brass following a view made there in 1805. unknown

Arthur Penrhyn Stanley 1815-1881 was an English churchman Dean of Westminster known as Dean Stanley. His position was that of a Broad Churchman and he was the author of works on Church History. Stanley was a candidate to succeed as Archbishop of Dublin following the death of Richard Whately in October 1863 but was rejected by the Church of Ireland. Richard Chenevix Trench the Dean of Westminster was appointed instead and towards the close of 1863 Stanley was appointed by the Crown to the newly vacated deanery. In December he married Lady Augusta Bruce sister of Lord Elgin then governor-general of India. His tenure of the deanery of Westminster was memorable in many ways. He recognized from the first two important disqualifications - his indifference to music and his slight knowledge of architecture. On both these subjects he availed himself largely of the aid of others and threw himself with characteristic energy and entire success into the task of rescuing from neglect and preserving from decay the treasure of historic monuments in which Westminster Abbey is so rich. In 1865 he published his Memorials of Westminster Abbey a work which despite occasional inaccuracies is a mine of information. <br/><br/> London: John Murray, 1868 hardcover

Contemporary full crimson straight-grain morocco with triple fillet border in blind and panel with large gilt corner-pieces of volutes curls and roundels enclosing a central masonic sunburst emblem in gilt with dove and Tetragrammaton to both covers. Heavily gilt tooled compartments and spine head and tail. Gilt rolls to edge corners. Gilt fillets to turn-ins. All edges gilt. With the crimson morocco bookplate of Christ's Church - Middlesex dated 1825. Housed in an early twentieth century red cloth slipcase. With a splendid early twentieth century fore-edge painting by an unknown hand depicting Folly Bridge and Bacon's Tower at Oxford. Folly Bridge is a stone bridge over the River Thames carrying the Abingdon Road south from the center of Oxford England. It was erected 1825-27 to designs of a little-known architect Ebenezer Perry died 1850 who practiced in London. The bridge is in two parts separated by an island. . Painting appears to be gouache on pith paper but not examined outside the frame matted with visible image 6 1/4 x 13 3/4 inches 16 x 25cm framed with glass to 11 x 18 1/2 inches. Light foxing visible in the blank upper background; color is bright. A touching scene of a young scholar being bid farewell by his father; at right is a chair and desk with inkstone and brushes. There is fine detail to the faces and attractive patterning to fabrics and floor coverings along with some varied attempts at rendering perspective. An unusual larger pith painting depicting a subject central to the Chinese Confucian tradition. . unknown

Period binding of full russet calf with raised bands decorations rules and inner dentelles gilt; marbled edges and endpapers. Binding professionally restored with original spine relaid retaining the endpapers. Laetitia Elizabeth Landon 1802-1838 was an English poet and novelist who had great success in her day despite being much vilified in the press where she was accused of having affairs and even of secretly bearing children. She broke off her engagement to John Forster the biographer of Dickens wanting to spare him the possible stain to his reputation. She later married George Maclean but took her own life by poison very shortly thereafter. Her literary status declined greatly during the twentieth century until such critics as Germaine Greer came to re-assess her work.Double fore-edge painting depicting in watercolour shoreside views of Long Island and Philadelphia. On the front pastedown is the fine pictorial bookplate of Gilbert R. Redgrave who in 1892 published A History of Water-Colour Painting in England so it is possible that the paintings are his work.The views are quite clear and fresh with great skill displayed in their detailed renderings.
